Trezor Safe 5
Trezor Safe 5 provides offline private key storage through physical hardware with EAL 6+ Secure Element protection, color touchscreen interface with haptic feedback, and multi-share backup capability. The device supports transaction signing for multiple blockchain networks while maintaining air-gapped security through USB connectivity only.
Trezor
Trezor is a hardware wallet platform built by SatoshiLabs, the Prague-based company that invented the hardware wallet category in 2014 with the release of the original Trezor Model One. For Solana users, Trezor offers air-gapped private key storage for SOL, SPL tokens, and Token-2022 assets — including native staking through Trezor Suite — on its current Safe-series devices.
The Problem It Solves
Storing cryptocurrency on software wallets or exchange accounts exposes private keys to internet-connected attack surfaces. Trezor removes that risk by generating and holding private keys entirely offline inside dedicated hardware, requiring physical confirmation on the device for every transaction.
How It Works
A Trezor device generates a BIP39 seed phrase during initial setup. When a user initiates a transaction through Trezor Suite, the unsigned transaction is passed to the hardware over USB or Bluetooth. The device displays full transaction details on its built-in screen, and the user must physically press a button to confirm. Only the signed transaction exits the device.
Device Lineup
The current lineup consists of three active devices, all supporting Solana:
Trezor Safe 3 — Entry-level device with EAL6+ certified secure element chip.
Trezor Safe 5 — Mid-tier device with a color touchscreen and EAL6+ secure element.
Trezor Safe 7 — Flagship device launched October 2025. Adds Bluetooth wireless connectivity, magnetic wireless charging, LiFePO4 battery, and post-quantum cryptographic protections. Combines two EAL6+ secure elements — TROPIC01 plus a second certified chip.
The older Trezor Model T also supports Solana. The original Model One does not and will not receive Solana support due to hardware limitations.
Solana Support
Trezor added Solana and SPL token support in late 2023:
- SOL and SPL tokens — Send, receive, and manage SOL and SPL tokens natively in Trezor Suite.
- Token-2022 standard — Added January 2025, expanding compatibility to assets on Solana's newer token standard.
- Native staking — Introduced March 2025. Trezor Suite integrates with Everstake to allow users to delegate SOL directly from Suite. Approximately 7% APY, auto-compounded, minimum 1 SOL, activation window of one epoch.
- Liquid staking tokens — Users can receive and hold liquid staking tokens such as mSOL or jitoSOL.
- Third-party wallet integration — Trezor connects to Backpack and NuFi, enabling access to Solana DeFi, NFTs, and dApps.
Security Architecture
All Safe-series devices include an EAL6+ certified secure element. All Trezor firmware is fully open-source and published on GitHub, subject to continuous community review and third-party security audits. The Safe 7 adds post-quantum cryptographic protections for firmware signing and device authentication.
Team and Company
SatoshiLabs was founded in 2013 in Prague by Pavol Rusnák, Marek Palatinus ("Slush"), and Alena Vránová. The company is entirely self-funded with no outside investors — a deliberate choice SatoshiLabs cites as necessary for maintaining open-source principles.
Solana Ecosystem Fit
Trezor addresses a persistent gap in the Solana ecosystem: robust cold storage with native Suite support for staking and Token-2022 assets. The Everstake integration lets Trezor users earn SOL staking rewards without connecting to a browser wallet, while the Backpack integration covers DeFi use cases that still require in-browser signing.
