Ledger
Ledger is a hardware wallet and signing infrastructure company that keeps users' private keys offline on a certified Secure Element chip, enabling them to buy, swap, stake, and manage digital assets without exposing keys to internet-connected software.
Core Mechanism
A Ledger hardware device — referred to by the company as a "signer" — stores a user's private keys inside a CC EAL6+ Secure Element chip that is physically isolated from the host computer or phone. Every transaction must be confirmed directly on the device itself, meaning a compromised PC or mobile application cannot authorize a signature without physical button input or touchscreen confirmation on the hardware. The company runs a proprietary operating system (BOLOS) on the device rather than a general-purpose one, reducing the attack surface exposed to third-party applications.
The companion Ledger Wallet app serves as the management interface, connecting to the hardware signer for transaction signing while also aggregating services such as asset purchases through 50+ providers, cross-chain swaps, staking, and portfolio analytics with real-time P&L data.
Products
Ledger offers four hardware wallet lines at different price and feature points:
- Ledger Nano Classics — entry-level device with a 1.1-inch screen
- Ledger Nano Gen5 — updated Nano-form-factor device with a 2.8-inch screen
- Ledger Flex — mid-range device with a 2.8-inch E Ink touchscreen protected by Gorilla Glass, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity
- Ledger Stax — flagship device with a 3.7-inch curved E Ink touchscreen
In May 2025, Ledger launched the Ledger Flex Solana Edition at the Solana Accelerate conference in New York City. The device uses Ledger Flex hardware with Solana's signature purple-and-green branding on the clip and button and comes preloaded with a non-transferable Soulbound Token (SBT) designed to unlock future rewards and airdrops from Solana ecosystem projects. It supports 130+ Solana tokens at launch, with more being added.
Beyond consumer hardware, Ledger Enterprise provides institutional-grade key management infrastructure for banks, hedge funds, and high-net-worth individuals through customizable multi-party signing workflows.
Solana Ecosystem Integration
Ledger's Solana support covers SOL itself plus the full SPL token standard — the fungible and non-fungible token format native to Solana, analogous to Ethereum's ERC-20. Users connect to the Ledger Wallet app to send, receive, buy, and stake SOL, with all signing operations requiring physical confirmation on the device.
Staking through Ledger is non-custodial: users delegate SOL to a validator of their choice, including the Ledger by Figment validator node, while retaining full custody of the staked assets at all times.
Clear Signing is a key security feature for Solana interactions. Instead of showing users a raw binary blob to approve (known as blind signing), the device displays a human-readable breakdown of the transaction — counterparty address, token amount, and program being called — before the user confirms. The system also performs transaction simulation to flag suspicious activity before approval.
Security Architecture and Donjon
Ledger's internal security research unit, Ledger Donjon, was established in 2017 by then-Chief Security Officer Charles Guillemet. The team stress-tests Ledger hardware and software as well as third-party devices using physical fault injection, side-channel analysis, and software fuzzing. Donjon publishes findings through a public blog and participates in responsible disclosure for vulnerabilities found across the broader hardware wallet industry.
The company also operates a bug-bounty program and contributes to open-source cryptographic libraries used industry-wide. Ledger's Secure Element chip carries Common Criteria EAL6+ certification, one of the highest security evaluation levels applied to commercial silicon.
Company Background
Ledger was founded on July 1, 2014, in Paris through the merger of three French startups — La Maison du Bitcoin, BTChip, and Chronocoin — bringing together co-founders including Eric Larchevêque, Nicolas Bacca, and Thomas France with backgrounds in cryptography, embedded security, and Bitcoin commerce. The company is headquartered at 106 rue du Temple in Paris, with additional offices in Vierzon, London, Portland, and Singapore.
By 2026 the company employs over 700 people and operates across 180 countries through its direct online store and a network of 100+ resellers. The company reported $70.9 million in revenue in 2024. Ledger has shipped more than 8 million hardware signing devices since its founding.
The Ledger Agent Stack, introduced in 2025-2026, extends the signing model to agentic software workflows: AI treasury agents and other automated systems can propose transactions, but final approval still requires hardware device confirmation, preserving the non-custodial security guarantee in automated contexts.
Solana Ecosystem Fit
Solana's account model and SPL token standard are natively supported in the Ledger Wallet app. For high-frequency Solana users, Clear Signing and Transaction Simulation address a long-standing friction point in hardware wallet usage on Solana, where complex instructions from DeFi protocols and NFT marketplaces historically required blind signing on many devices. The Ledger Flex Solana Edition and the Soulbound Token program represent a deliberate push by Ledger to embed itself in Solana community identity, complementing technical integrations with ecosystem partnerships and token-gated access at product launch.
