Backpack Wallet Adds Solana v1 Transaction Support and Launches AI Search
Backpack Wallet now signs Solana v1 transactions, which raise the size cap to 4,096 bytes. Phantom, Solflare, Ledger and Trezor have yet to announce support.
Backpack Wallet added support for Solana's v1 transaction format on 2 October 2026, announcing at 00:58 UTC that "more can happen in a single transaction: more complex routes, more efficient execution and greater programmability across tokenized stock markets and DeFi apps." The format has been live on the network since v1 activated on Solana mainnet at epoch 1035 on 15 September, but a v1 transaction is only useful to an app if the user's wallet can sign it. Backpack Wallet now can. Phantom, Solflare and the Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets have not announced the same.
Backpack CEO Armani Ferrante marked the release with a one-line post: "v1 transactions are live on @solana!" About 36 minutes after the wallet announcement, Backpack's exchange account launched a second product, Backpack AI Search, covered below.
What Solana v1 transactions (SIMD-0385) change
Solana v1 transactions raise the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, according to Anza, the Solana client developer that announced mainnet activation at 01:04 UTC on 15 September. Anza said that "ZK proofs, large multisigs, BLS signatures, and confidential transfers that required multiple transactions now fit in one atomic operation." Atomic means all-or-nothing: every step in the transaction succeeds together or none of it happens.
The format also moves resource requests, including the compute limit and the priority fee, out of separate instructions and into the transaction header. And it drops address lookup tables, the shorthand that v0 transactions use to reference long lists of accounts. A v1 transaction lists its accounts directly instead. The Solana Foundation's analysis of that trade-off found that around 62% of v0 transactions reference at least one lookup table, and that 90% would grow by less than 1,400 bytes if converted to v1, which leaves room inside the new cap.
v1 is opt-in. Anza said legacy and v0 remain supported "while existing apps continue working as is," so nothing breaks for apps that never switch.
Why wallet support decides when Solana apps can use v1
An app cannot send a v1 transaction to a wallet that cannot sign one. The Solana Foundation's upgrade guide tells apps to check a wallet's advertised supportedTransactionVersions before building v1, and tells wallet makers that "a wallet must only advertise a version it can actually sign."
The guide also cautions that a wallet adding v1 does not mean every user has updated to that version. It works like a new image format on the web: a site can only serve it to browsers that say they can display it, and everyone else gets the old format. For Solana apps, the use cases Anza listed reach users only as fast as wallets ship support and users update.
Phantom, Solflare, Ledger and Trezor v1 support status
As of 2 October, we found no public announcement of v1 support from Phantom CASH$1.0000.0% or Solflare.
The hardware wallets have open requests. A GitHub issue on Ledger's Solana app, opened on 2 September, asks for v1 support and reports that the app currently rejects v1 messages as invalid (ApduReplySolanaInvalidMessage, 0x6a80). The issue has no maintainer response, assignee or linked fix, and Ledger has not announced v1 support for the app.
Trezor's firmware issue, opened on 10 September, is assigned to a developer and sits in the firmware project's "To do" column. Its author warns that when apps begin sending v1, "signing will fail with an error that's indistinguishable from a malformed transaction." Neither issue gives a timeline.
Server-side tooling is further along. The Solana Foundation's Solana Keychain v2 release on 1 October added v1 signing to its backend library, which covers services that sign on behalf of apps rather than individual users' wallets.
Backpack AI Search: one search bar across stocks, crypto, perps and Earn
Backpack's main account introduced Backpack AI Search at 01:34 UTC on 2 October: "Ask Backpack to find it. A stock. A strategy. A market condition. Anything you can put into words." The search covers stocks, crypto, perpetual futures and Earn from a single bar across Backpack.
Armani Ferrante wrote that "if you trade stocks, this is one of those features you can't live without after having used it." When one user posted that a query "didnt work," Ferrante replied that "it's not a chat box to ask for naming advice," which places the feature as market search rather than a general assistant. Backpack has not published documentation on the model behind it, the data it searches or which platforms carry it.
The stock framing matches where Backpack has been building, including US stock trading through its Backpack Securities brokerage. Backpack's wallet announcement also named tokenized stock markets first among the beneficiaries of v1.
What Backpack's v1 support means for Solana apps
Backpack's wallet post points at the use v1 makes possible for its own users: trade routes that touch more markets and accounts than the old 1,232-byte limit allowed, completed in one transaction. Whether apps build those routes depends on how many of their users can sign them. Until Phantom, Solflare and the hardware wallets follow, an app that adopts v1 has to keep a v0 path for users on other wallets, and Backpack Wallet users are among those it can already reach with the larger format.
