About

Backpack

Backpack is one of the most ambitious projects to emerge from the Solana ecosystem — a company that began as a developer-built wallet, survived near-obliteration, and has since grown into a globally regulated crypto exchange operating in over 150 countries. Today it combines spot trading, perpetual futures, lending, automated trading bots, prediction markets, and — most recently — direct ownership of real US equities through a 24/7 blockchain-native securities platform.

Origins and the Anchor Connection

Backpack was founded in 2022 by Armani Ferrante, a Solana developer best known for creating Anchor, the smart contract framework that underpins roughly half of all programs deployed on Solana. That technical pedigree shaped Backpack's DNA from the start: the project launched with a security-conscious self-custodial wallet and introduced the concept of xNFTs — executable NFTs that could embed and run full applications directly inside the wallet interface, effectively turning NFT ownership into a gateway for on-chain software.

The company's early months were nearly fatal. When FTX collapsed in November 2022, Backpack lost $14.5 million — approximately 88% of its operating capital. Rather than shut down, the team continued building with the resources that remained.

Mad Lads and the NFT Relaunch

The turnaround came in April 2023 with the quiet launch of Mad Lads, a 10,000-piece NFT collection on Solana comprising 9,000 Lads and 1,000 Lassies. The collection rapidly topped NFT charts across all chains and became Solana's number-one collection by both market cap and trading volume. Mad Lads served a dual purpose: it rebuilt Backpack's treasury and established a loyal, engaged community that would form the social layer of the broader ecosystem. When Backpack later launched its $BP token, Mad Lads holders received an airdrop, deepening the connection between the NFT community and the exchange product.

The Regulated Exchange

Backpack launched the beta of its centralized exchange in November 2023, shortly after securing a Virtual Asset Service Provider license from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). That regulatory-first posture — positioning the exchange as compliant and transparent at a moment when the industry was reeling from FTX's unregulated collapse — became a defining competitive angle.

Growth in the beta period was rapid. By March 2024, Backpack had surpassed 500,000 fully KYC-verified users. Daily trading volume reached $9 billion during the beta pre-season, and cumulative volume crossed $60 billion by May 2024 across 150 or more countries. The company raised $17 million in a Series A round in February 2024, led by Placeholder VC, at a $120 million valuation.

Regulatory expansion accelerated in 2025. In January, Backpack acquired FTX Europe's assets for $32.7 million, securing a Cyprus-issued MiFID II license that enables regulated derivatives trading across the European Union. In September 2025 the company formally launched Backpack EU with regulated perpetual futures. Backpack also became Japan's first new exchange association member since 2022, adding a lending and borrowing product for Japanese users in December 2025.

Product Suite

The exchange has expanded well beyond basic spot trading. Futures went into public beta in March 2025, with hourly funding rates and daily Proof of Reserves added later that year. January 2026 brought native Grid Bots — automated trading strategies that run directly on the platform — followed by a Unified Prediction Portfolio in private beta, allowing cross-margined positions across crypto, financial markets, and real-world event outcomes from a single account.

The Backpack Wallet, available as a browser extension and mobile app on iOS and Android, supports Solana, Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Base, Sonic, and additional blockchains. It includes token swapping, staking, NFT protection via collection locking, hardware wallet integration with Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone devices, and multi-signature wallet support. The wallet and exchange share a single interface, positioning Backpack as a unified entry point for both self-custodial asset management and active trading.

Backpack Securities and Tokenized US Equities

The most significant development of 2026 is Backpack Securities, launched in June 2026 and expanded with 24/7 trading capabilities in July. The platform gives international investors in over 150 countries direct ownership of real US equities — not synthetic instruments, but actual shares with dividend rights, corporate actions, and integration with ACATS and DTCC settlement infrastructure.

Backpack partnered with Sunrise, a Solana-based tokenization protocol, to allow holders to convert their equity positions into on-chain tokens that are wallet-compatible and usable within DeFi protocols. These tokenized representations can be transferred, held in self-custody, or used across blockchain networks, while the underlying brokerage maintains US regulatory compliance for the actual share ownership. Initial equities available for 24/7 trading include SpaceX (SPCX), Micron (MU), and SanDisk (SNDK).

CEO Armani Ferrante has described this integration as convergence rather than competition: real equity ownership and blockchain-native access are two parts of the same financial system. Backpack's position — holding regulated licenses in Dubai, the EU, and the US — gives it the infrastructure to operate that bridge legally across jurisdictions.

Scale and Standing

By mid-2026, Backpack has processed nearly $450 billion in cumulative trading volume, with daily volumes regularly exceeding $1 billion. The exchange operates under multiple regulatory licenses, has recruited senior talent from Citi, Stripe, and Coinbase, and maintains an open-source wallet codebase on GitHub under the coral-xyz organization. From a wallet built by a single Solana developer to a multi-product financial institution serving users across 150 countries, Backpack's trajectory reflects both the resilience of its founding team and the expanding scope of what regulated on-chain finance can look like.
