On-chain activity
Phoenix Spot
Phoenix Spot implements a fully on-chain central limit orderbook architecture on Solana, facilitating atomic trade settlement without asynchronous cranking mechanisms. The system processes limit and market orders with direct wallet-to-wallet settlement, maintaining price-time priority execution rules while enabling immediate fund availability after order fills. Phoenix Spot operates through verified smart contracts deployed on Solana Mainnet.
Phoenix Perps
Phoenix Perps implements perpetual futures trading infrastructure on Solana through proprietary AMM-style liquidity mechanisms. The system facilitates derivatives trading with gasless execution for retail users while providing professional traders with predictable order execution and advanced strategy support capabilities.

Phoenix
Phoenix is a fully on-chain perpetuals exchange on Solana, built by Ellipsis Labs. The project began as a spot trading venue and has since expanded to become one of the most technically distinctive derivatives platforms in the Solana ecosystem. Its foundation is a crankless central limit order book (CLOB) design that eliminates the external settlement bots required by earlier Solana DEXes, enabling trades to settle atomically within the same transaction that initiates them.
From Spot to Perpetuals
When Phoenix launched its spot order book in early 2023, Solana's daily DEX volume ran in the $20–30 million range. The crankless CLOB quietly accumulated scale: by mid-2025 the original Phoenix spot program had processed over $75 billion in cumulative notional volume, helping compress price impact on major Solana spot pairs from around 30 basis points down to roughly 5 basis points—matching centralized exchange benchmarks like Binance's pre-fee spreads.
The pivot to perpetuals was announced publicly at Breakpoint 2025. Rather than maintain two separate products, Ellipsis Labs positioned the perpetuals exchange as the primary consumer-facing product, using the same underlying settlement infrastructure that powered the spot book. The spot program remains live but active development has shifted to the perps product, which launched in private beta late 2025 and moved to broader access through 2026.
The Crankless Design
Phoenix's signature architectural choice is worth understanding in concrete terms. Earlier Solana order books—Serum being the canonical example—relied on off-chain agents called cranks to finalize pending trades. A trade placed by one user and matched against another created an intermediate state that a cranker had to process before either party's balance reflected the outcome. This introduced latency, third-party dependency, and a practical barrier for retail access.
Phoenix removes this layer entirely. Settlement happens natively within Solana's runtime: the moment a trade executes, both sides' balances update in the same atomic transaction. There is no pending state, no external keeper, and no settlement delay. The practical consequence is that any wallet—including a mobile browser tab—has identical access to the exchange as a dedicated trading terminal. Ellipsis Labs co-founder Jarry Xiao explained the design rationale in a Validated podcast appearance, framing the crank as "a massive speed bump" that Phoenix was built specifically to eliminate.
Account structure differs from predecessors as well. Rather than maintaining per-user open order accounts for each market, Phoenix keeps a single account per market holding all participant balances. This reduces the cost of frequent order placement and cancellation, which matters particularly for market makers who might update quotes hundreds of times per second across multiple price levels.
Phoenix Perpetuals
The perpetuals product applies the same settlement model to leveraged derivatives. Key product characteristics:
Fee structure. Phoenix charges approximately 0.035% per trade, roughly one-third of Hyperliquid's fee schedule and two-thirds less than other Solana-native perp venues. The team's stated goal is pricing parity with centralized exchange pre-fee costs—the same benchmark Phoenix's spot program hit for spot pairs.
Price impact. In testing and live trading, Phoenix has demonstrated sub-one-basis-point price impact on trades up to $8 million notional. For context, comparable trades on other on-chain Solana perp platforms have historically run at 15 basis points or higher. The Breakpoint 2025 announcement framed this as achieving a "3x improvement" over prevailing on-chain derivatives pricing.
Gasless retail trading. Retail users trade without paying gas fees directly, reducing friction for smaller participants who would otherwise find per-transaction costs prohibitive relative to their position sizes.
Composability. The architecture is designed to be built upon. Third-party developers can use Phoenix's on-chain settlement layer as infrastructure to launch vaults, options products, social trading platforms, or gamified trading experiences without replicating the core matching and settlement machinery.
Market maker protections. The proprietary AMM design inherited from Ellipsis Labs' SolFi project—reportedly the largest on-chain market maker on Solana—incorporates protections against toxic order flow. Market makers can provide tighter quotes with higher confidence that they are not systematically disadvantaged by latency arbitrage or frontrunning strategies.
Mobile and Accessibility
In June 2026, Phoenix extended full functionality to mobile browsers, removing the app download requirement entirely. Limit orders, on-chain settlement, and instant withdrawals all operate through the mobile web interface. The platform reached a single-day high of 4.7 million transactions and 878 unique signers within a 24-hour period, with a daily volume all-time high of $4.3 million recorded in May 2026. The mobile launch coverage highlighted 0.5-second finality per trade as the key performance figure enabling a viable mobile experience.
Ellipsis Labs Context
Phoenix is one product within a broader Ellipsis Labs portfolio. Alongside Phoenix, the team built SolFi, a proprietary AMM that functions as the largest on-chain market maker on Solana. More recently, Ellipsis Labs revealed Atlas, a Layer 2 sequencer that will settle on Ethereum rather than Solana. Atlas is designed to address what founder Eugene Chen calls Solana's "proposer monopoly"—single validators controlling transaction ordering for 1.6-second windows, creating structural exposure to MEV and sandwich attacks for traders.
Eugene Chen's July 2025 Lightspeed podcast appearance provides the clearest statement of the team's philosophy: build cryptographically verifiable finance rather than rely on social contracts or ideological commitments to decentralization. Phoenix embodies that approach—fully on-chain, non-custodial, audited by OtterSec, with settlement mechanics that are verifiable without trusting the operator.
The practical tension in Ellipsis Labs' roadmap is that Atlas, which will settle on Ethereum, may eventually offer different tradeoffs than Phoenix on Solana. For now, Phoenix remains the active consumer product: live, composable, and positioned as the low-cost on-chain alternative to both centralized perpetuals venues and existing Solana-native competitors.
Current Status
Phoenix Perpetuals operates in live production with open access. The platform supports perpetual futures trading across multiple assets, with full feature parity between desktop and mobile browser interfaces.
