Backpack Securities Charges 0.12% Against Robinhood Chain 5.42% for Small-Dollar

Sam Schubert, an analyst at Blockworks Research, measured all-in execution costs for tokenized stock trades on Backpack Backpack Securities and Robinhood Robinhood Chain across two sample periods. For sub-$100 orders of Micron Technology (MU MU) sampled September 3 through 16, the gap was 0.12% on Backpack versus 5.42% on Robinhood Chain. In the $100-$1k bracket, Backpack came in at 1.6 basis points, with Robinhood Chain at 43.7 basis points.

A second dataset, covering the Sprott Physical Gold ETF (SPCX) from August 27 through September 9, showed a consistent pattern: 2.7 bps versus 34.7 bps in the $100-$1k range, and 0.11% versus 4.29% below $100.

How All-In Costs Were Measured for MU and SPCX Trades

Schubert calculated each figure against the stock midpoint price, not the posted ask, to account for spread. The measurement includes embedded DEX fees and actual network charges, not just the headline platform commission. Backpack Securities currently charges zero commission on spot US stock trades, but on-chain routing through the Solana DEX layer and standard Solana network fees apply when withdrawing or trading on-chain. Those costs are captured in the all-in figure.

The sub-$100 bracket shows the widest percentage difference because fixed network costs represent a proportionally larger share of a small notional. As order size rises into the $100-$1k tier, the same absolute costs shrink as a percentage, which is why both platforms price in basis points at that level rather than whole percentages.

MU Sample: Micron Technology Orders, September 3-16

In the two-week Micron window, the all-in cost on Backpack for mid-sized orders was 1.6 bps, with Robinhood Chain at 43.7 bps. Backpack at 0.12% against 5.42% on Robinhood Chain for sub-$100 orders reflects the same structural dynamic at a smaller notional.

Micron Technology tokens on Backpack Securities are redeemable 1:1 for real shares through the Backpack brokerage infrastructure, giving holders the ability to exit back into traditional equity ownership. That two-way redemption path, combined with the scalable, continually improving Solana execution stack, forms the core of Backpack positioning in the tokenized equity market. On September 21, Solana Compass data shows the MU token at more than 5,200 holders with $1.54M in daily volume on Solana.

SPCX Sample: Sprott Physical Gold ETF, August 27-September 9

SPCX covers a physically-backed gold ETF rather than an equity, sampled over an earlier window (August 27 through September 9). Results were consistent: 2.7 bps on Backpack versus 34.7 bps on Robinhood Chain for $100-$1k orders, and 0.11% versus 4.29% for sub-$100 trades. The pattern holding across two different asset classes in two different sampling windows suggests the gap reflects execution architecture rather than liquidity conditions specific to either instrument.

What Drives the Cost Difference Between Solana and Robinhood Chain

Robinhood Chain is an Ethereum Layer 2, and Ethereum L2 execution and settlement carry gas cost floors regardless of trade size. For small-dollar orders, those fixed components consume a proportionally large share of the notional, which explains the steep percentage figures in the sub-$100 tier. Backpack Securities tokens trade on Solana-native liquidity pools through the same venues that power the broader Solana tokenized equity ecosystem, where Solana base fees are structurally lower in absolute terms.

Schubert noted in the SPCX thread that two-way conversion between tokens and stocks matters even more when paired with the scalable, continually improving Solana execution stack, and described the bigger prize as making "onchain finance economical for retail users worldwide and institutional flows at scale."

The Solana tokenized equity market has expanded substantially around this cost structure. Tokenized equity holders on Solana reached a record 850,000 last week, with $3.3B in flows over the preceding 30 days. Raydium RAY$1.79+7.8% Raydium, the primary venue for Backpack Securities tokens, routes more than 90% of Solana tokenized stock DEX volume with $5B processed as of September.

Data Limitations and What the Sample Establishes

Blockworks Research covered defined windows on two assets. Execution costs vary with liquidity conditions, market hours, and on-chain congestion. The figures represent the actual all-in cost traders bore in those periods, not a best-case guarantee for future orders. Schubert acknowledged in a reply thread that full durability would require publishing sample size, trade-time spread distribution, and redemption cost and timing. Published as-is, the data establishes a directional comparison across two assets over two windows.

Backpack Securities waived trading fees through July 2026 as part of its early-adoption phase. The 0% commission on spot US stock trades is the current published structure from Backpack; the Solana on-chain routing costs are the variable component in the all-in figure Schubert measured.
