About

Robinhood

Robinhood is a U.S.-headquartered financial services platform founded in 2013 with the mission to democratize investing for retail participants. Originally known for pioneering commission-free U.S. stock trading, Robinhood has evolved into a comprehensive investment destination serving more than 28 million users globally, with cryptocurrency now representing a major and growing segment of its business. For Solana investors, Robinhood is one of the largest and most accessible retail venues to buy, sell, and stake SOL.

Background and Scale

Robinhood launched at a time when brokerage commissions were a meaningful barrier to retail participation in financial markets. By eliminating trading fees, it attracted a generation of new investors and forced the broader industry to follow. The platform subsequently expanded from equities into options, ETFs, and then cryptocurrency. As of late 2025, Robinhood reported approximately $51 billion in crypto assets under custody and more than $232 billion in crypto trading volume over the prior twelve months — figures that place it among the largest retail crypto venues by volume. Crypto revenues account for more than 21% of the company's total revenue.

In June 2025, Robinhood completed a $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp, the world's longest-operating crypto exchange, adding institutional-grade spot exchange infrastructure and expanding the platform's tradeable asset list beyond 85 tokens.

Crypto Trading and Solana Support

Robinhood supports trading of 45 or more digital assets for U.S. customers and more than 65 for European customers. Solana (SOL) is among the featured assets, with a dedicated trading page showing real-time pricing, market cap, circulating supply, and 24-hour volume data. The platform describes Solana's core technology — proof-of-stake combined with proof-of-history enabling up to 65,000 transactions per second — as part of its asset education content.

Pricing execution uses smart exchange routing to optimize fill quality across liquidity sources. For higher-volume customers, advanced fee tiers offer rates as low as 0.03%. Robinhood Crypto operates as a licensed cryptocurrency service in the jurisdictions where it is available and processes trading independently of traditional brokerage accounts.

SOL Staking

Robinhood launched staking for Ethereum and Solana in 2025, initially in select U.S. states and subsequently expanding to New York — notable given that state's historically stringent regulatory requirements for crypto products. The staking product allows users to participate in blockchain consensus and earn rewards with a minimum of $1, with Robinhood handling all technical validator operations on behalf of customers.

Robinhood takes a 25% commission on staking rewards, a fee structure that went into effect October 1, 2025. Third-party staking partner fees apply in addition. The product also supports Cardano (ADA) staking. Geographic restrictions apply; availability varies by U.S. state.

The staking launch is part of Robinhood's broader strategy to generate yield-based revenue alongside transaction-based revenue, and it represents a meaningful simplification for retail investors who want SOL exposure and network rewards without managing validator infrastructure themselves.

Robinhood Chain: Ethereum Layer-2 for Tokenized Assets

Robinhood's most ambitious blockchain initiative is Robinhood Chain, a permissionless, EVM-compatible Layer-2 network built on Arbitrum Orbit (the Nitro stack), settling to Ethereum mainnet. The testnet launched February 10, 2026, and the public mainnet launched July 1, 2026. The chain operates on chain ID 4663 with 100-millisecond block times and uses ETH as its native gas token.

The primary purpose of Robinhood Chain is to host tokenized real-world assets — equities, ETFs, private assets, and other financial instruments — enabling 24/7 programmatic trading and self-custody of assets that traditionally trade only during exchange hours. Tokenized stock products became live globally through Robinhood Wallet on mainnet launch, available to users in more than 120 countries and territories.

Robinhood Chain uses a first-come, first-served sequencing model where transaction ordering is determined strictly by arrival time at the sequencer, with no ability for validators or users to front-run by paying higher gas. The chain is fully developer-accessible: it supports Solidity and Vyper, integrates with standard toolchains including Hardhat and Foundry, offers standard JSON-RPC connectivity, and provides first-class ERC-4337 account abstraction with gas sponsorship capabilities.

Ecosystem partners at launch include Alchemy for RPC infrastructure, Chainlink for price oracles, LayerZero for cross-chain bridging, Uniswap for DEX liquidity, and institutional custodians Fireblocks and BitGo.

Stock Tokens and Tokenized Equities

Before Robinhood Chain's mainnet, Robinhood launched stock tokens for European customers issued on Arbitrum. These are derivative contracts linked to the underlying equity, offering access to more than 200 U.S. stocks and ETFs with zero commissions added by Robinhood, 24/5 trading access, and automatic dividend distribution. With the mainnet launch of Robinhood Chain, tokenized stock trading is being migrated to the proprietary chain and expanded globally through Robinhood Wallet, unlocking access in regions where U.S. stock market participation has historically been limited.

Additional Products

Beyond trading and staking, Robinhood's crypto suite includes:

  • Perpetual futures: Available to EU customers with leverage up to 7x on crypto, ETFs, commodities, and currencies, routed through Bitstamp infrastructure.
  • Money market funds: Partnered with J.P. Morgan, offering a 5% yield on euros with no lockup, available to European users.
  • Cortex: An AI-powered market analysis tool providing real-time insights for Gold subscribers.
  • Advanced charting: Professional-grade tools available on desktop and mobile.
  • Tax tools: Manual cost basis entry and tax-lot selection to help customers manage crypto tax obligations.

Relevance to the Solana Ecosystem

Robinhood's significance to the Solana ecosystem is primarily as a distribution channel. With more than 28 million users, it is one of the largest retail interfaces through which investors access SOL without managing self-custody infrastructure. The introduction of SOL staking deepens this relationship — retail users can now earn network rewards on their SOL holdings without interacting with validators, wallets, or staking protocols directly.

Robinhood Chain itself is Ethereum-native rather than Solana-native, but the broader trend it represents — fintech incumbents building onchain infrastructure for tokenized assets — is directly relevant to the competitive dynamics of the Layer-1 ecosystem. Solana's high throughput and low fees have made it a contender for tokenized asset use cases, and Robinhood's decision to build on Ethereum/Arbitrum rather than Solana reflects where those battles are being contested.

For retail participants, Robinhood remains one of the simplest regulated pathways to acquire and stake SOL in the U.S. market.
