About

Orca

Orca is a decentralized exchange and liquidity protocol built on Solana, operating since 2021. It has accumulated more than 500 billion dollars in cumulative trading volume, consistently held over 230 million dollars in total value locked, and maintained a zero-exploit security record across more than five years of continuous operation. The protocol serves three overlapping audiences: retail traders seeking fast, low-cost token swaps; liquidity providers deploying capital for fee income; and developers building on-chain products that need programmable liquidity access.

Whirlpools: Concentrated Liquidity as the Core Mechanism

Orca's primary liquidity engine is Whirlpools, a concentrated liquidity automated market maker (AMM) introduced in 2022. Unlike traditional full-range AMMs, which distribute liquidity evenly across all possible prices, Whirlpools allows liquidity providers to specify a price range within which their capital is active. Capital concentrated near the prevailing market price generates fees more efficiently than the same capital spread across an unbounded range -- but positions that drift out of range stop earning fees until the price returns or the provider adjusts.

Pool creation in Whirlpools uses a tick-array architecture to define discrete price points. A July 2025 upgrade called Dynamic Tick Arrays significantly reduced the on-chain storage cost of initializing new pools, lowering the barrier for token teams and projects seeking to bootstrap liquidity on Orca.

Fee Structure and Adaptive Fees

Whirlpools operates across multiple fee tiers, ranging from 0.01% to 2.00% per swap. Fee revenue is distributed across three destinations: 87% goes directly to liquidity providers in the relevant pool; 12% flows to the Orca DAO Treasury; and 1% is directed to an Impact Fund supporting ocean conservation and financial literacy initiatives -- a program through which the protocol has donated more than 1 million dollars.

In June 2025, Orca introduced Adaptive Fees for select pools. This mechanism applies a variable fee component on top of a pool's base tier, automatically widening the spread during periods of elevated price volatility. The design compensates liquidity providers for the increased impermanent loss risk they face when markets move rapidly, without requiring manual position adjustment.

Products and Interface

Beyond raw liquidity infrastructure, Orca provides a set of tools aimed at making position management accessible:

Liquidity Terminal is the primary interface for creating and managing concentrated liquidity positions. It offers persistent settings, resizable position tables, and granular charting options to help providers monitor performance.

Position Simulator allows users to model projected returns across different price ranges and capital amounts before committing funds, giving a preview of fee income scenarios under varying market conditions.

Portfolio Dashboard aggregates all active positions in one view, enabling tracking and compounding of fee earnings across multiple pools.

Liquidity Locking, introduced in early 2025, allows token creators and LPs to lock liquidity in a pool permanently or for a defined period while still harvesting swap fees. This feature addresses a common trust concern for token launches -- projects can demonstrate to buyers that liquidity cannot be withdrawn.

Vaults offer a more passive deployment path, routing capital into curated strategies without requiring active range management.

Notable Ecosystem Role

Orca has served as the liquidity venue of choice for several high-profile Solana token launches. PayPal's PYUSD stablecoin, Coinbase's cbBTC -- which alone generated more than 10.3 billion dollars in cumulative trading volume on Orca -- and Jito's JTO governance token, which saw more than 750,000 trades at launch, all used Orca pools as their primary liquidity layer. Swaps on Orca are also routed through aggregators including Jupiter, giving Orca pools indirect exposure to a large share of Solana on-chain trading volume.

Developer Access

Orca publishes a TypeScript SDK under the @orca-so/whirlpools-sdk package that provides programmatic access to swaps, liquidity creation, and pool management. The protocol uses Solana's Cross-Program Invocation (CPI) framework, allowing other on-chain programs to interact directly with Whirlpools pools. A CPI Integration Repository with examples for multiple Anchor framework versions was released in 2025. Orca also supports Solana's Token Extensions standard, with full handling of transfer-fee tokens across trading, fee harvesting, and liquidity operations.

ORCA Token and Governance

ORCA is the protocol's governance token, with a hard-capped total supply of 100 million. Holders participate in the Orca DAO through a council-plus-veto model: an elected DAO Council votes on proposals, while token holders retain a veto right over any proposal if one million ORCA votes against it within a two-day cool-down window.

In 2025, the DAO executed a significant supply-side decision: 25 million ORCA tokens -- 25% of the total supply -- were burned as part of a governance proposal realigning protocol incentives. Separately, the DAO approved directing 20% of all Whirlpools protocol fees toward open-market purchases of ORCA, with bought tokens deposited into a designated xORCA reserve.

xORCA is the staking product that connects ORCA holders to this fee-driven buyback flow. Users stake ORCA to receive xORCA, which accumulates value as protocol fee purchases are routed into the reserve.

A subsequent governance proposal in August 2025 authorized deploying up to approximately 55,000 SOL and 400,000 USDC from the DAO Treasury into a 24-month buyback program. Daily purchases are capped at 2% of ORCA's 30-day average trading volume, with automatic pauses during periods of price volatility exceeding 15% in a 24-hour window. The program also includes staking a portion of the SOL through the Orca validator to enhance transaction propagation. Quarterly reporting on tokens purchased, average prices, and remaining funds is required.

Security and Regulatory Position

Orca's smart contract code is open source and has undergone independent audits. The protocol has not suffered an exploit since launch in 2021, a record spanning more than five years of live operation across sustained high-volume conditions. The Whirlpools program address -- whirLbMiicVdio4qvUfM5KAg6Ct8VwpYzGff3uctyCc -- is publicly verifiable on Solana mainnet.

In 2025, Orca partnered with the Solana Policy Institute and asset manager Superstate to submit "Project Open" to the SEC, a proposal outlining regulatory frameworks for compliant securities issuance and trading on public blockchains. The initiative positions Orca as an active participant in efforts to bring traditional financial instruments on-chain under a defined legal structure.

Positioning on Solana

Orca occupies a distinct lane on Solana relative to other liquidity protocols. Where Raydium offers a broader DEX suite including order books, and Jupiter specializes in swap routing and aggregation, Orca's focus is the concentrated liquidity layer itself -- the infrastructure that token teams, structured product builders, and capital allocators use to deploy and manage on-chain positions. The Whirlpools protocol functions as underlying infrastructure for a significant portion of Solana DeFi, with pools accessible both through Orca's own interface and through routing layers that aggregate liquidity across the ecosystem.
