Wallet Development Kit (WDK)

WDK provides open-source libraries and modules for building self-custodial wallets supporting multiple blockchains. The modular architecture includes wallet modules for blockchain operations, protocol modules for DeFi integrations including swaps, bridges, and lending, and pre-built UI components for React Native. Built on Bare runtime, it supports Node.js and React Native environments, enabling deployment across mobile, desktop, embedded systems, and server applications.

About

Tether

Tether is the company behind USDT, the world's largest stablecoin by circulating supply, providing blockchain-native representations of fiat currencies and gold whose value is maintained through a reserve-backed model rather than algorithmic mechanisms.

Origins and Background

Tether began in July 2014 under the name Realcoin, co-founded by Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars. The project built one of the first fiat-pegged digital tokens using the Omni protocol on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. In November 2014 the company rebranded to Tether, and USDT began trading in early 2015, becoming the template for the stablecoin category that now accounts for hundreds of billions of dollars in on-chain liquidity.

Tether is privately held under parent company iFinex Inc., which also owns the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange. Giancarlo Devasini, co-founder and former CFO, was named Chairman in March 2025 and holds an estimated 40-47% ownership stake. Paolo Ardoino, who joined Bitfinex as a software engineer in 2014 and rose to CTO of both Bitfinex and Tether, became CEO of Tether in October 2023. In January 2025, Tether relocated its corporate headquarters to San Salvador, El Salvador, establishing its first permanent physical office.

Core Mechanism

Every Tether token is designed to maintain a 1:1 peg to its underlying asset. For USDT, each token in circulation is backed by Tether's reserve holdings, which as of end-2024 included approximately 113 billion USD in U.S. Treasury securities, with additional holdings in overnight repo agreements, cash, gold, bitcoin, and secured loans. Reserves are primarily custodied through Cantor Fitzgerald. Tether publishes daily circulation data through its transparency portal and has historically provided quarterly attestations signed by Italian accounting firm BDO Italia.

In March 2026, Tether announced it had engaged KPMG, a Big Four accounting firm, to conduct the company's first comprehensive independent financial statement audit since founding. The audit covers digital assets, traditional reserve holdings, and tokenized liabilities across the full reporting period, rather than confirming a balance on a single date as attestations do. By mid-2026, total USDT circulation stood near 185-190 billion USD, up from approximately 118 billion USD at the start of 2025.

Products and Token Suite

Tether issues several distinct tokens, each backed by a different underlying asset:

USDt (USDT) is the flagship U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin and the most widely used stablecoin across global crypto markets, underpinning trading pairs on hundreds of exchanges and serving as a settlement layer for cross-border payments in markets where dollar access is constrained.

EUR-T and CNH-T provide euro and offshore Chinese yuan exposure respectively, extending Tether's fiat-pegged model beyond the dollar.

MXNt is a Mexican peso-pegged stablecoin serving markets in Latin America.

XAUt (Tether Gold) launched in 2020 and is backed by physical gold held in Swiss vaults. Each XAUt represents ownership of one troy fine ounce of gold on a specific gold bar, with the underlying bullion audited independently.

Alloy by Tether is an additional product extending Tether's infrastructure beyond simple fiat or commodity pegs.

USAT, announced in August 2025, is a U.S.-domiciled stablecoin specifically designed for American residents, reflecting Tether's response to the evolving U.S. regulatory environment around stablecoins.

Solana Presence

Tether was the first stablecoin issuer to deploy on Solana. The initial USDT deployment launched on September 9, 2020, with Tether citing Solana's throughput capable of exceeding 50,000 transactions per second and near-zero transaction costs as the rationale for prioritizing the network. That first Solana deployment preceded most of the DeFi activity that later built up around the ecosystem, with Project Serum, Torus, and Chainlink cited as early integration partners at launch.

Native USDT on Solana has grown to a supply of approximately 3-4 billion USD, making it a primary liquidity pair across Solana's decentralized exchanges and a key instrument for retail traders active on the network.

In October 2025, Tether expanded its Solana footprint by deploying USDT0 and XAUt0 through the Everdawn Labs Legacy Mesh platform, built on LayerZero's interoperability protocol. USDT0 is an omnichain version of USDT that allows the token to move across more than fifteen blockchains without relying on wrapped tokens or third-party bridges. Each unit of USDT0 is backed one-to-one by USDT locked in an Ethereum mainnet lockbox, with cross-chain balances reconciled through LayerZero messaging. As of the Solana launch, USDT0 had processed over 25 billion USD in bridge volume across more than 320,000 transactions on other networks, with a 0.03% bridge fee. XAUt0 similarly enables gold-backed token flows from Solana to other chains, making on-chain gold exposure accessible within Solana DeFi applications for the first time. In February 2026, Tether Investments formalized the relationship by disclosing a strategic equity investment in LayerZero Labs.

Regulatory and Legal Context

Tether's history includes several notable regulatory actions. In February 2021, the company settled with the New York Attorney General following an investigation into allegations that Bitfinex had drawn on Tether's reserves to cover an 850 million USD shortfall. Tether paid an 18.5 million USD fine and agreed to enhanced reporting obligations, without admitting wrongdoing. In October 2021, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission separately fined Tether 41 million USD for making misleading statements about the composition of its dollar reserves during 2016-2018.

Under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA), Tether did not obtain an e-money institution or asset-referenced token license. As a result, major European exchanges including Binance, Kraken, Coinbase EU, and Crypto.com delisted USDT spot pairs for EU users through late 2024 and into 2025.

Ecosystem Fit on Solana

Within the Solana ecosystem, USDT serves primarily as a trading and settlement token. It underpins major trading pairs on Solana's centralized and DEX venues, is embedded in cross-border payment flows that route through Solana because of the chain's low transaction costs, and is particularly dominant in markets across Asia and Latin America where USDT has deeper consumer brand recognition than competing stablecoins. The 2025 USDT0 deployment adds an interoperability dimension, allowing Solana-native applications to access Tether's omnichain liquidity pool without locking users into a single-chain representation of the asset.

Tether reported 13 billion USD in net profits for 2024. In September 2025, the company was reported to be seeking 15-20 billion USD in external funding at an implied valuation of approximately 500 billion USD.
