Crypto's Ultimate Vision: Who's Building On Solana?
PayPal's PYUSD Launch on Solana ... One of the most significant announcements discussed in the podcast was PayPal's decision to launch its stablecoin, PYUSD, on the Solana network.
PayPal
PayPal is one of the largest digital payment platforms in the world, founded in December 1998 and serving hundreds of millions of users across more than 200 markets. Originally built to facilitate online commerce through eBay partnerships, PayPal grew into a standalone financial technology company handling peer-to-peer money transfers, merchant payment processing, buy-now-pay-later financing, and more recently a full suite of cryptocurrency services. The company recorded revenues of 8.68 billion dollars in Q2 2026 on total payment volume of 486 billion dollars, reflecting its position as one of the most used financial services platforms globally. Its Solana-focused stablecoin initiative has made it one of the most consequential traditional finance entrants in the blockchain payments space. PayPal began its cryptocurrency journey in 2020 when it introduced the ability for US customers to buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash directly through its consumer app. The company extended crypto trading to Venmo, its peer-to-peer payments subsidiary, the following year. The decisive move came in August 2023 when PayPal launched PayPal USD, known as PYUSD, a fully-backed regulated US dollar stablecoin issued by Paxos Trust Company under oversight of the New York State Department of Financial Services. PYUSD launched initially on Ethereum, backed 1:1 by cash, cash equivalents, and short-duration US Treasury instruments, with monthly reserve attestations published through the Paxos transparency portal to ensure verifiable solvency at all times. The stablecoin expansion to Solana, announced at the Consensus 2024 conference in May of that year, marked a turning point in how PayPal positioned PYUSD. The company selected Solana for its combination of high transaction throughput, sub-second finality, and transaction costs typically measured in fractions of a cent. Early launch partners included Crypto.com, the Phantom wallet, and Paxos itself, enabling immediate utility across popular consumer wallets and exchanges from day one. Under this architecture, PayPal and Venmo users see PYUSD as a unified balance regardless of which blockchain it resides on. When transferring to external wallets, users can choose whether to route funds through Ethereum or Solana, though the economics of the latter have strongly favored Solana adoption, with the stablecoin Solana supply crossing the one billion dollar mark, reflecting the network growing dominance as a consumer payment rail. By February 2026, PayPal made the shift explicit: Solana was designated the default network for PYUSD payment processing. This decision reflected the reality already visible in transaction data. Since July 2025, Solana had consistently surpassed Ethereum in PYUSD transaction volume, and by early 2026, the network was handling an estimated 60 to 70 percent of all PYUSD transactions. Solana processed 650 billion dollars in total stablecoin transaction volume in February 2026 alone, a figure that underscored why PayPal payment team anchored around it for consumer-facing flows. PYUSD expansion throughout 2025 and into 2026 was dramatic. From a standing start in 2023, the stablecoin reached a circulating supply of approximately 4.09 billion dollars as of March 2026, representing 680 percent year-over-year growth, the fastest supply expansion of any major stablecoin in that period. The token peg to one US dollar held through periods of market volatility, supported by the Paxos reserve structure and redemption mechanics. The first quarter of 2026 saw several meaningful real-world deployments. In January, YouTube launched creator payouts denominated in PYUSD, giving content creators a new channel to receive earnings directly in a digital dollar. That same month, Visa Direct integration via BVNK opened PYUSD to cross-border remittance flows. In March 2026, PayPal expanded PYUSD availability to 70 markets globally, adding Singapore, the United Kingdom, Peru, and Guatemala. In April 2026, PayPal restructured internally to create a dedicated Payment Services and Crypto division merging Braintree merchant processing infrastructure with PYUSD operations, a signal that PayPal viewed the stablecoin as a potential native settlement layer for its 35 million merchant network. CEO Alex Chriss noted publicly that if the payments system were being designed today, it would likely be built on blockchain rails. PYUSD operates across Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, and Stellar as native deployments, with LayerZero bridging infrastructure extending its reach across additional networks. The GENIUS Act signed in July 2025 created the first US federal framework for payment stablecoins, requiring 1:1 reserves in cash, insured deposits, or short-term US Treasuries, a standard PYUSD already met under Paxos administration. PayPal also joined Mastercard Crypto Partner Program in early 2026 alongside more than 85 companies working to connect blockchain infrastructure with the Mastercard global payment network for use cases including cross-border transfers and business-to-business settlements. For users operating within the Solana ecosystem, PYUSD is a regulated, liquid, and increasingly accessible dollar-denominated asset with both on-chain DeFi utility and off-ramp optionality through one of the most recognized financial brands in the world. PayPal embrace of Solana as its primary stablecoin settlement network represents one of the most significant endorsements of the network capacity as a regulated payment infrastructure layer from a mainstream financial institution.
