About

Coinbase

Coinbase is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States and one of the most consequential companies in the digital asset industry. Founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam, the company launched during Bitcoin's earliest commercial era with a mission to create an open financial system for the world. What began as a simple interface for buying and selling Bitcoin has expanded into a multi-product platform serving more than 100 million users, institutional investors, and developers across nearly every segment of the crypto economy.

From Exchange to Ecosystem

Coinbase's retail exchange remains its most recognized product — a regulated marketplace where users can buy, sell, and hold hundreds of digital assets, including Solana (SOL). The platform supports spot trading, recurring purchases, and now an integrated DEX experience, with Coinbase having embedded Jupiter — Solana's largest decentralized exchange aggregator — directly into its app. This integration allows Coinbase's user base to trade Solana-native tokens at launch without leaving the interface or routing trades through external platforms, bridging Solana's onchain liquidity with Coinbase's mainstream distribution.

Alongside its consumer exchange, Coinbase operates Coinbase International Exchange for perpetual futures and Coinbase Derivatives, which targets brokers and market makers. In late 2025 and into 2026, the company intensified its "Everything Exchange" ambition by adding stock trading, prediction markets in partnership with Kalshi, and equity index perpetual-style futures — including contracts tracking the S&P 500 — positioning itself as a single destination for traditional and digital assets alike.

Base: Coinbase's Layer-2 Blockchain

One of Coinbase's most significant recent developments is Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 network built on the OP Stack. Base launched publicly in 2023 and has since grown into one of the dominant L2s by almost every metric. By mid-2025, Base held over $5.6 billion in total value locked, representing approximately 46.6% of all L2 DeFi TVL. That year, Base captured over 60% of all Ethereum Layer-2 revenue and processed more than $17 trillion in stablecoin volume.

Base is no longer just a low-cost transfer layer. It hosts a full DeFi stack, leading consumer social applications, NFT infrastructure, and a growing memecoin ecosystem. While Base is Ethereum-native, Coinbase has built a Base-Solana bridge allowing users to move SOL assets between the two networks natively — a move that tightens the relationship between Coinbase's L2 and the Solana ecosystem.

Coinbase Developer Platform

Coinbase has made substantial investments in its developer infrastructure through the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP), a unified suite of APIs and tools for building onchain applications. CDP spans both consumer and institutional use cases and is accessible through a single API key.

Key capabilities include:

  • Wallet infrastructure: Non-custodial wallets with social login and passkeys, custodial server-side wallets, and agentic wallets designed for AI agents to hold and transact assets autonomously.
  • Payment rails: Programmatic fiat and crypto transfers, deposit destinations, and x402 — Coinbase's open HTTP-native payment protocol.
  • Onchain tools: A Trade API for token swaps, a Staking API for yield generation, a Paymaster for gasless transactions, and Data APIs for wallet balances and transaction history.
  • AgentKit: A framework enabling AI agents to interact onchain — requesting payments, executing swaps, and managing assets without human intermediation.

x402: Internet-Native Payments

Released in May 2025, x402 is an open payment protocol that embeds stablecoin payments directly into HTTP interactions using the long-dormant 402 Payment Required status code. It allows AI agents, APIs, and software to pay for resources one request at a time using USDC, without creating accounts or waiting for human approval. The CDP hosted facilitator supports x402 on Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, World, and Solana. Cloudflare co-founded the x402 Foundation with Coinbase in September 2025 and built native x402 support into Cloudflare Workers, extending the protocol's reach to a substantial fraction of global internet infrastructure.

Institutional Services and Solana

Coinbase Prime is the company's institutional prime brokerage platform, offering custody, trading, financing, and staking under one roof. Coinbase Custody Trust Company is a Qualified Custodian chartered under New York state banking law with a decade of operational history. Prime maintains SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits.

Solana is a first-class asset within Coinbase's institutional offering. In partnership with Figment, Coinbase Prime expanded native staking to SOL in early 2026, providing eligible institutional clients access to staking rewards of up to 8.2% APY, backed by full slashing protection and segregated custody. Coinbase operates high-availability Solana validators with multi-region, multi-client, multi-provider infrastructure.

The institutional footprint extends to exchange-traded products. In July 2026, Coinbase announced that Morgan Stanley is offering staked ETH and SOL exposure through ETPs powered by Coinbase — one of the first instances of a major wirehouse delivering SOL staking yield to wealth management clients. Grayscale's Solana Trust also uses Coinbase Prime under a formal ETP staking addendum.

Regulatory Standing and Market Position

Coinbase went public on Nasdaq in April 2021 via a direct listing, briefly reaching a market capitalization of $100 billion. It remains the only major U.S. cryptocurrency exchange listed on a national securities exchange and has been an active participant in crypto policy discussions, advocating for clear regulatory frameworks.

Across its product lines — retail exchange, L2 infrastructure, developer platform, and institutional prime services — Coinbase functions less as a single exchange and more as a financial operating system for digital assets. Its deepening Solana integrations, from native DEX trading to institutional SOL staking to cross-chain bridges, reflect the growing importance of the Solana ecosystem within Coinbase's broader strategy.
