Lightspeed - Solana Gets Even Faster With Robin A. Nordnes
In this episode of Lightspeed, host Jack speaks with Raiku founder Robin A.
Lightspeed
Lightspeed Venture Partners is one of the most established venture capital firms in the world, founded in 2000 and operating for more than 25 years across the full startup lifecycle from pre-seed through Series F and beyond. The firm manages over $40 billion in assets and takes a global approach to backing founders, with offices and investment teams spanning the United States, Europe, India, Israel, and Southeast Asia.
The firm's core investment philosophy centers on what it describes as depth over breadth. Rather than building a portfolio through broad bets, Lightspeed commits to deep immersion in the companies and sectors it backs — developing mastery that gives it conviction to support founders through the full arc of company building. This approach has produced a portfolio with a track record of major public market exits, including Rubrik, Netskope, and Navan, all of which reached IPO in recent years.
AI as the Defining Thesis
Lightspeed has positioned itself as a leading AI investor over more than a decade. The firm has backed over 165 AI-native companies, including Anthropic, xAI, Databricks, Mistral AI, Glean, and Skild AI. In September 2025, Lightspeed co-led Anthropic's $13 billion Series F, contributing approximately $1 billion to the round — one of the largest single-firm commitments in venture history.
In December 2025, the firm closed more than $9 billion in fresh committed capital across six fund vehicles — its largest fundraise in its 25-year history. Funds included a $3.3 billion opportunity fund for follow-on investments in its fastest-growing portfolio companies, reflecting the firm's ability to support companies from initial check through late-stage growth.
Solana and Web3 Involvement
Lightspeed's connection to the Solana ecosystem runs across multiple fronts and reflects consistent conviction in Solana as an infrastructure layer for Web3 applications.
In November 2021, Lightspeed joined Solana Ventures and FTX to announce a joint $100 million investment program targeting Web3 gaming. The initiative aimed to fund gaming studios building on Solana's blockchain and to support the integration of NFT economies and Solana-native payments into existing game titles. Lightspeed partner Amy Wu, who led the firm's gaming and consumer crypto investments, framed the thesis as gaming providing the clearest path to bringing the next billion users into Web3. The fund's first deployment was a $21 million investment into gaming studio Faraway, with Lightspeed and FTX co-leading.
Beyond gaming, Lightspeed made a direct early-stage investment in Solana in 2022 through Lightspeed India Partners. The investment was led by partner Hemant Mohapatra, who focuses on software infrastructure and developer tooling companies across India and the United States.
Lightspeed Faction: The Crypto-Native Arm
Lightspeed launched Lightspeed Faction in July 2022 as a dedicated, blockchain-native venture subsidiary. Faction operates as a joint venture with Lightspeed Venture Partners, sharing resources and platform while maintaining independent investment discretion and its own limited partner base.
Faction raised its inaugural $285 million fund, closing the first tranche in July 2022 and the final close in July 2023, exceeding its original $250 million target. The fund is managed by co-founders and managing partners Samuel Harrison and Banafsheh Fathieh, whose backgrounds include Coinbase, Blockchain.com, and Amber Group.
Faction focuses on seed and Series A-stage investments across the crypto ecosystem, with average check sizes of $5 million to $10 million and a typical lead-investor position. The firm describes itself as sector-agnostic across blockchain verticals — investing in infrastructure, DeFi, payments, stablecoins, real-world assets, and protocol-level projects. Its portfolio includes Matter Labs (the team behind ZkSync Era), Lens Protocol, Crossmint, and Turnkey.
Within the Solana ecosystem specifically, Faction backed Raiku, which raised $11.25 million in September 2025 with Pantera Capital and Jump Crypto also participating. Faction has continued active deployment into 2025 and 2026, participating in rounds for projects including Plume (a $20 million Series A in January 2026) and several DeFi infrastructure deals.
Portfolio and Scale
Lightspeed's broader portfolio spans enterprise software, cybersecurity, healthcare, and consumer technology. Prominent investments include Wiz, Cyera, Cato Networks, ThoughtSpot, Faire, and BetterUp, alongside the firm's deep AI positions. The firm previously backed Epic Games, Offchain Labs, and Alchemy as part of its gaming and infrastructure focus.
With over $40 billion in assets under management and a demonstrated willingness to write large, conviction-driven checks across both traditional venture and frontier technology categories — including a sustained posture toward Solana and blockchain infrastructure — Lightspeed represents one of the most significant traditional VC presences in the Solana ecosystem.
