The Future of NFTs with Zedd of Magic Eden
The Rise of Magic Eden in the Solana NFT Ecosystem ... Magic Eden has become a dominant force in the Solana NFT ecosystem since its launch in October 2021.
Magic Eden
Magic Eden is the dominant NFT marketplace on Solana, built from the ground up for the network's speed and low transaction costs. Founded in September 2021 by Jack Lu (CEO), Sidney Zhang (CTO), Zhuoxun Yin (COO), and Zhuojie Zhou (Chief Engineer), the platform rose from startup to unicorn within its first year of operation, establishing itself as the default venue for discovering, buying, and selling Solana-native digital collectibles.
How the Marketplace Works
Magic Eden operates as a peer-to-peer trading venue where sellers list NFTs at fixed prices or accept bids, and buyers purchase directly through on-chain settlement. There are no listing fees; the platform earns a 2% transaction fee on completed sales. Royalty enforcement on Solana is optional and varies by collection, with individual creators setting their own policies.
The platform supports the full breadth of Solana token standards: Metaplex Core, Token 22, compressed NFTs (cNFTs), inscriptions, and SPL20. This broad compatibility means any legitimately minted Solana NFT can be traded without friction, and collections spanning gaming items, profile picture projects, art, and digital trading cards all appear in a single unified interface.
Beyond basic buy-sell mechanics, the platform offers several advanced trading features. Bulk listing allows holders to price and list entire wallets at once, while the sweep function enables buyers to acquire multiple floor items in a single transaction. Lucky Buy provides a gamified alternative to standard market purchases, and SOL Packs offer randomized NFT bundles. Integrated price charts and collection-level analytics help traders assess liquidity and track floor-price momentum before committing capital.
Launchpad and Creator Tools
Magic Eden's Launchpad is among its most strategically significant products. New collections can apply to launch through the platform, gaining access to Magic Eden's distribution network, curated placement on the homepage, and minting infrastructure. The Launchpad has been used by several of the highest-profile Solana collections, including Mad Lads, DeGods, and Claynosaurz. Creators benefit from configurable royalty structures, allowlist management, and analytics dashboards during the launch window. This creator-facing infrastructure is a core reason the platform retained its dominant position on Solana even as competitors expanded their trader-incentive programs.
Multichain Expansion and the Return to Solana
Between 2023 and 2025, Magic Eden pursued an aggressive multichain strategy. The platform launched dedicated marketplaces for Bitcoin Ordinals and Runes, expanded to Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, and shipped a unified multi-chain wallet in January 2024 that held Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon assets in a single interface. At peak, Magic Eden controlled more than 80% of Bitcoin Ordinals trading volume and briefly surpassed Blur and OpenSea to become the highest-volume NFT marketplace globally, recording $734 million in transaction volume in March 2024 alone.
The multichain bet ultimately proved too costly to sustain. In February 2026, CEO Jack Lu announced that 80% of the company's operating costs were tied to products generating only 20% of revenue, with Solana consistently accounting for more than 85% of total platform volume. Bitcoin and EVM marketplaces closed on March 9, 2026. The multi-chain wallet entered export-only mode in mid-March and was fully discontinued on April 1, 2026. The platform's Bitcoin API support also ended March 27, 2026.
The strategic rationale was transparent: concentrate resources on the highest-returning business line while pursuing new revenue streams beyond NFTs. Magic Eden's Solana marketplace continues operating without interruption, and the launchpad relationships built over four years remain intact.
$ME Token
Magic Eden launched its native governance token, $ME, on December 10, 2024. Built as a Solana SPL asset, $ME has a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens distributed over a four-year schedule. The community allocation is the largest single tranche at 50.2%, divided between the initial airdrop claim (12.5%) and a longer-term community and ecosystem reserve (37.7%). Contributors — employees, advisors, and early supporters — received 26.2%, subject to an 18-month lockup post-launch. Investors and advisors account for the remaining 23.6%.
$ME holders participate in the ME DAO, which launched governance functions in Q1 2026. Stakers hold primary voting power over protocol fees and key partnerships. The platform also operates a buyback program, directing 30% of revenue from Swaps, Lucky Buy, and Packs into open-market purchases of $ME tokens and NFTs, designed to run through 2026. This creates programmatic buy-side pressure tied directly to platform usage.
Dicey: iGaming Expansion
Alongside the Solana refocus, Magic Eden launched Dicey (dicey.com), a crypto-native casino and sportsbook. Transactions are settled on Solana, making outcomes verifiable on-chain. During a two-month closed beta, roughly 200 users wagered more than $15 million, which management cited as evidence that high-frequency betting volumes could exceed the sporadic liquidity of the current NFT market. CEO Jack Lu framed the move as positioning for what he described as a "speculation supercycle, where finance merges with entertainment." Dicey now sits alongside the Solana NFT marketplace as one of the company's two primary business lines.
Team and Funding
The four co-founders each came from established institutions before building Magic Eden. Lu worked at Boston Consulting Group and Google as a product manager. Zhang had previously raised capital for a Bitcoin startup after relocating to the US. Yin spent time at Bain & Company, then dYdX and Coinbase. Zhou was an engineer at Facebook and Checkr.
Magic Eden raised $157 million across funding rounds. A $130 million Series B in June 2022, led by Greylock Partners and Electric Capital, valued the company at $1.6 billion. Other investors include Paradigm, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The unicorn valuation was reached within roughly nine months of launch, reflecting the explosive growth of Solana NFTs during that period.
Solana Fit
Magic Eden is native Solana infrastructure, not a multichain protocol that added Solana as an afterthought. Its program address (ocp4vWUzA2z2XMYJ3QhM9vWdyoyoQwAFJhRdVTbvo9E) operates directly on Solana Mainnet. The platform's full-cycle support — discovery, minting, trading, and now governance via the ME DAO — makes it a foundational layer for the Solana NFT ecosystem. After testing the limits of multichain expansion, Magic Eden's decision to return resources to Solana reinforces rather than undermines its position as the network's definitive marketplace for digital collectibles.
