What Is Blockchain.com?
Blockchain.com is one of the longest-running cryptocurrency companies in existence, founded in 2011 in York, England, by Ben Reeves, Peter Smith, and Nicolas Cary. It started as the first Bitcoin blockchain explorer on the internet — a free, public tool for searching and verifying on-chain transactions. Over the following decade it expanded into a full-stack crypto infrastructure business spanning retail wallets, a brokerage exchange, institutional trading and custody, staking, and developer APIs. As of 2026, the platform reports 95 million wallets created, 39 million verified users, over $1.1 trillion in cumulative transaction volume, and more than 1,300 institutional clients.
The company operates with the stated mission of being "global crypto infrastructure for people, institutions, and AI," positioning itself as the financial plumbing layer rather than a single-purpose product. Revenue is split roughly 60 percent from institutional services and 40 percent from retail, reflecting the pivot to professional-grade offerings that followed its 2021 peak valuation of $5.2 billion. In May 2026 the company confidentially filed for an IPO with the SEC.
Core Products
Blockchain Explorer The original product remains live and free. Users can search Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and other chain transactions by address, block, or hash. The Solana explorer page surfaces real-time block data, live SOL pricing, market cap, 24-hour volume, and historical ROI charts. This is a read-only data tool with no custody of user assets.
Consumer Wallet Blockchain.com's retail wallet is available as a web application and mobile apps for iOS and Android. It supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polygon, SOL, XRP, and other assets. The wallet offers both a hosted (custodial) mode and a self-custody mode under the "your keys, your crypto" principle, giving users the option to control their private keys. In-app features include buy/sell/swap, DeFi app connections, NFT management, crypto-backed loans from 1.9% annually, and memecoin trading. Users can also earn yield on supported assets.
Exchange and Brokerage Launched in July 2019, the Blockchain.com exchange functions primarily as a brokerage that executes trades using the company's internal crypto reserves rather than a traditional order-book model. SOL is among the assets tradeable on the platform alongside hundreds of other tokens. Institutional clients access a separate OTC desk offering 600-plus tokens and fiat pairs, 24/7 global execution, and both principal and agency trading with low-slippage execution.
Institutional Services Institutional offerings are the backbone of Blockchain.com's current revenue profile. The suite covers:
- Custody: Proprietary cold storage using multisig encryption with fully segregated customer accounts. Certifications include SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, and CCSS Level 3. Controls are independently assessed annually by A-LIGN.
- Staking: Blockchain.com stakes assets on behalf of institutional clients while keeping those assets in cold storage. Supported protocols include ETH, TON, and SOL, among others. The company states it stakes "billions on behalf of clients."
- Lending and Borrowing: Crypto-backed loan products for institutional counterparties.
- Market Making and Liquidity: Proprietary low-latency algorithms for liquidity provisioning, with 95 percent guaranteed uptime.
- Digital Asset Treasury: An integrated platform combining trading, custody, staking, yield, and lending with strategic advisory support.
The institutional OTC desk is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Blockchain.com has also secured a VASP Custody Services Licence in the Cayman Islands, received MiCA authorization for its OTC desk in Malta, and been admitted to Nigeria's SEC Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme.
Solana Integration
Blockchain.com's relationship with Solana spans multiple product tiers. On the retail side, SOL is available to buy, sell, and hold in the consumer wallet, with the Solana explorer providing free on-chain data access. On the institutional side, SOL is one of the explicitly supported protocols for staking within cold storage, meaning institutional clients can generate staking yield without moving assets to a hot wallet. The platform's 600-plus token OTC desk also covers the broader Solana token ecosystem.
Blockchain.com is not a Solana-native project — it is a multi-chain platform that predates Solana by roughly nine years. Its inclusion of SOL reflects the asset's status as a major Layer 1 rather than any deep protocol-level integration or validator participation.
Security and Audits
Blockchain.com's custodial infrastructure holds multiple industry-standard certifications: SOC 2 Type 2 (annual), ISO 27001, PCI DSS SAQ A-EP for retail payments, and CCSS Level 3 (Cryptocurrency Security Standard). Custody, staking, and retail app controls are reviewed annually by A-LIGN. Institutional client accounts are fully segregated to prevent commingling of assets.
The company has also encountered significant risk management failures. In 2022 it suffered $270 million in losses following the default of Three Arrows Capital and subsequently laid off approximately 25 percent of its staff. This episode was among the most visible institutional credit losses in the 2022 crypto credit crisis.
Team and Backing
Blockchain.com has raised $537 million in equity capital across several rounds. Notable investors include Vy Capital, Baillie Gifford, DST Global, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The leadership team includes CEO and co-founder Peter Smith, co-CEO Lane Kasselman, and co-founder Nicolas Cary as Vice Chairman. The board brings in external figures from traditional finance, including former US Comptroller of the Currency Joseph Otting and political strategist Jim Messina.
As of 2026, the company reports approximately 300 to 450 employees and maintains operational hubs in London, Dallas, and Singapore.
Ecosystem Fit
Within the Solana ecosystem, Blockchain.com functions as a gateway rather than a native builder. It provides one of the broadest distribution channels for SOL purchases among mainstream crypto platforms, and its institutional staking offering gives large holders a regulated, cold-storage path to earn SOL staking rewards. For Solana validators and the broader staking economy, Blockchain.com represents delegated stake arriving through an institutional intermediary rather than a direct on-chain participant.
