About

Solana Spaces

Solana Spaces is a Solana Foundation-backed retail and community brand that pioneered immersive in-store crypto onboarding in 2022, closed its permanent locations after seven months, and has since been revived by a new community team as an online storefront and event pop-up concept operating at major Solana conferences.

What It Is and the Problem It Solves

In mid-2022, onboarding a curious but crypto-naive person to Solana required them to navigate browser extensions, seed phrases, and DEX interfaces entirely on their own. The self-custody learning curve was steep and the ecosystem had no physical foothold in mainstream consumer culture. Solana Spaces was designed to close that gap by placing hands-on blockchain education inside a purpose-built retail environment, the same way Apple Stores made personal computing approachable by letting people walk in off the street and touch the product.

The core bet was that if Solana ever intended to serve everyday consumers rather than only crypto-native users, it needed a place those consumers could enter with zero prior knowledge and leave with a working wallet and a genuine understanding of what the network could do for them.

Origins and Founding Team

Solana Spaces was founded in 2022 by Vibhu Norby, an entrepreneur best known as co-founder of B8ta, a retail-as-a-service chain that redefined the electronics store format by separating the display and education functions from the point-of-sale function. The same principle informed Solana Spaces: the store would not be a shop in the conventional sense but an experiential venue that happened to sell merchandise.

The Solana Foundation funded and incubated the venture, providing both capital and ecosystem access. The broader founding team drew heavily from B8ta's roster of retail designers and engineers, giving the project credible execution ability on the physical side from the outset.

Phase One: Permanent Brick-and-Mortar Stores (2022-2023)

The flagship location opened July 28, 2022 at The Shops at Hudson Yards in Manhattan, making it one of the first permanent crypto-branded retail venues in a major American city. A second location followed in October 2022 in Miami's Wynwood arts district under the name The Solana Embassy, occupying 4,500 square feet that could be configured as an event venue or nightclub after hours.

Inside both locations, visitors moved through a structured series of tutorial stations. Key onboarding steps included setting up a Phantom Wallet, completing learning modules co-designed with Orca, STEPN, Solana Pay, Metaplex, and Magic Eden, and receiving NFT badges as proof-of-completion that could be exchanged for rewards. The Miami store added a Degen Ape Cafe concept in collaboration with the Degenerate Ape Academy NFT project and featured exclusive merchandise drops that drew comparison to streetwear brand Supreme's scarcity-release model.

Partners at launch included Phantom, Orca, STEPN, Solana Pay, Metaplex, Magic Eden, Degenerate Ape Academy, Blanksoles, and NETGEAR. The stores charged no admission and offered hardware wallet setup assistance, making them among the few genuinely barrier-free entry points into on-chain Solana at the time.

Over roughly six months of operation the two locations attracted approximately 60,000 total visitors and completed around 16,000 structured onboarding tutorials. Weekly sign-ups averaged 500 to 1,000 new wallet activations per store.

In November 2022, the company open-sourced its store operating model to allow global franchising. A franchise location had been planned for India, and discussions were underway for cities including London, Los Angeles, and New Delhi.

Closure and Pivot to DRiP

Both permanent stores closed February 28, 2023 -- seven months after the Hudson Yards opening. The closure was not presented as a failure but as a strategic reallocation. Norby explained that while the stores were viable, the team had reached an inflection point: their parallel digital product, DRiP, a free NFT artwork airdrop platform, was onboarding the same number of new Solana users every day that the physical stores reached in a week. By the time of the announcement, DRiP had 50,000 registered users with 175,000 more on the waitlist.

DRiP went on to become one of the most widely used NFT distribution mechanisms on Solana. In April 2025, Jupiter -- Solana's leading DeFi aggregator -- acquired DRiP Haus, with half the team continuing to operate the distribution platform independently and the other half moving to build out Jupiter's NFT capabilities.

Phase Two: Community Revival and Pop-Up Model

Solana Spaces did not disappear with its storefronts. A new community-led team picked up the brand and reoriented it around two simpler, leaner channels: an online store and a physical presence at major Solana events.

The online storefront at solanaspaces.com sells official Solana-branded apparel, hardware wallets, phones, gaming gear, and dePIN devices, with payments accepted in both card and crypto. The event pop-up concept operates at conferences including Solana Accelerate, NFT NYC, and Breakpoint, where Solana Spaces gives ecosystem teams a dedicated space to sell their own merchandise and collects approximately 20 percent of revenue in exchange. This model keeps physical overhead near zero while maintaining the brand's historical role as a community gathering and commerce hub for the broader Solana ecosystem.

The Solana Spaces Twitter account (@solanaspaces) remains active as of mid-2026, posting regularly about merchandise releases and community events.

The STORE Token

In early 2025, a community member launched a memecoin called STORE on the pump.fun launchpad (contract address: FLJYGHpCCcfYUdzhcfHSeSd2peb5SMajNWaCsRnhpump) in tribute to the brand's legacy. The token briefly reached a market capitalization of approximately 12 million dollars before retracing to significantly lower levels. STORE trades on Solana-based decentralized exchanges and is reflected in the project's community tagline. It carries no formal utility guarantee and was not issued by the original Solana Spaces or Vibhu Norby team; it is best understood as a community speculative asset tied to brand sentiment rather than a project-issued utility token.

Audit and Security Status

Solana Spaces as a retail and community brand does not operate smart contracts or DeFi liquidity pools requiring formal security audits. The STORE memecoin is a community-launched asset; no independent audit of its token contract has been identified in available sources. Users should treat it accordingly.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Solana Spaces holds a distinctive position in Solana's history as the ecosystem's most serious attempt to establish a mainstream consumer retail presence during the 2022 bull cycle. Its partnership network at launch -- Phantom, Magic Eden, Metaplex, STEPN, Orca -- reads as a cross-section of Solana's defining consumer and DeFi applications of that era. The pivot to DRiP demonstrated that digital-native onboarding could scale far more efficiently than physical retail, a conclusion that ultimately accelerated one of the more consequential NFT distribution experiments on any blockchain.

In its current form, Solana Spaces is less an onboarding protocol and more the official merch and events backbone of the Solana community -- filling a role analogous to what conference pop-ups and branded stores play for major tech ecosystems, without the overhead of permanent retail. For anyone interested in the history of blockchain consumer adoption, it remains one of the more instructive case studies in what worked, what did not, and how a brand can survive the gap between the two.
