Breakpoint 2024: Product Keynote: Powerledger: Democratizing Power for a Sustainable Future for All

In a groundbreaking announcement at Breakpoint 2024 in Singapore, Powerledger revealed its expansion onto Solana Mainnet, marking a significant leap forward in the intersection of blockchain technology and sustainable energy solutions. ... Powerledger, a pioneer in peer-to-peer electricity trading, has announced its expansion onto Solana Mainnet.

About

Powerledger

Powerledger is an energy-software company that builds tools to track, trace and trade renewable energy. Its products cover peer-to-peer electricity trading and renewable energy certificate (REC) marketplaces. Since October 2024 it has run on Solana, and its POWR token exists natively on both Solana and Ethereum.

What Powerledger does

Powerledger was founded in Perth, Western Australia, in 2016. The problem it targets is a grid moving from a few large power stations to millions of rooftop solar panels, batteries and other small generators. According to its website, the company builds software for grid congestion and the intermittency of renewables. The goal is to give utilities, governments and businesses market tools and transparent records for energy transactions.

The company's argument, repeated in its recent posts on X, is that the hardware for distributed generation already exists. What is missing is market infrastructure that can price and settle energy between large numbers of small producers and consumers by time of use and location. Powerledger's products are built to fill that gap.

Products

Transactive (P2P energy trading). Powerledger's main product lets households and businesses with solar panels sell surplus electricity directly to neighbours instead of exporting it to the grid at a price the utility sets. In March 2026 the company launched Transactive Lite, a simpler, batch-based version that works from existing meter data rather than real-time connections. It matches generation to demand, handles carbon accounting and ESG reporting, and writes an audit trail to Solana. The company pitches it for pilots that can later move to the full real-time platform, and says it uses the same trading logic.

TraceX (REC marketplace). TraceX is a marketplace for Renewable Energy Certificates and other energy attribute certificates. It offers real-time price discovery, built-in payments and a blockchain audit trail. It is integrated with M-RETS (the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System), which Powerledger describes as the largest voluntary REC registry in North America. Users link their M-RETS account, import certificates to list for sale, and the certificates move to the buyer's registry account once payment clears. Certificates are locked in M-RETS while they are listed on TraceX to prevent double counting. The M-RETS partnership was announced in January 2020. Powerledger reported that more than 1.2 million RECs were traded on TraceX in January 2025. It named ERCOT and NAR as planned registry expansions.

The website also lists xGrid, Vision and PPA Vision, along with portfolio management for 24/7 renewable matching, EV charging and hydrogen tracking.

Deployments

Powerledger lists utility and registry clients on its website. They include:

  • Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation in India, which the company calls its largest P2P trading project, with more than 1,000 participants.
  • Tata Power-DDL, for P2P solar trading across more than 150 meters in North Delhi.
  • Energie Steiermark in Austria, for its smartCOMMUNITY monitoring and trading project.
  • TDED in Thailand.
  • M-RETS in North America.

The company says its P2P work in India helped bring about regulatory changes there.

The POWR token and the move to Solana

POWR launched in 2017 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Powerledger's 2017 whitepaper set out a two-token model. POWR acted as an access token, similar to a software licence, for platform operators. A second token, Sparkz, represented energy traded locally and could be converted to cash, according to a Norton Rose Fulbright summary. The token sale opened on 27 August 2017, and more than 90 million tokens were sold within days. RenewEconomy reported that the presale raised about A$17 million, and it is widely described as Australia's first ICO.

Powerledger later ran its own blockchain. Its 2023 lightpaper described that chain as a high-performance, low-cost public network. On 1 October 2024 the company began deprecating that chain and moved to Solana mainnet. It announced the completed integration on 13 October 2024. Co-founder John Bulich said Solana's lower fees and faster processing were the reasons for the move. As part of the change, Powerledger retired its POWR staking platform. Staked tokens were unstaked on 1 October 2024 and could be withdrawn after seven days.

POWR now exists as an SPL token on Solana ([[TOKEN:PowerhfyX6JqFprXzy89fPBSKqmLj8Yzcvr3FkHrQHR]]) and as an ERC-20 on Ethereum. The migration created no new supply: Ethereum POWR was locked to match the tokens minted on Solana. Holders were not required to move from Ethereum. Powerledger later adopted [[PROJECT:595]]'s Native Token Transfers (NTT) framework for cross-chain transfers. NTT burns POWR on the source chain and mints it natively on the destination chain, so there is no wrapped version. According to the August 2025 case study, transfers run through the Wormhole Portal interface. POWR is still used to pay for platform services.

Powerledger has not published a smart-contract audit for its Solana deployment.

Team

Dr Jemma Green is co-founder and executive chair. She worked in investment banking at J.P. Morgan in London before completing a PhD on electricity market disruption, which the company credits as the origin of Powerledger. She was named Australia's EY Fintech Entrepreneur of the Year. John Bulich is co-founder and technical director. In 2024 Powerledger was listed among the top 50 companies in Switzerland's Crypto Valley, and it has won a Renewable Energy Markets award for innovation.

Place in the Solana ecosystem

Powerledger is one of the older enterprise-focused real-world-asset projects on Solana. It uses the network for its token and as a low-cost audit and settlement layer for energy-market data. Most of its revenue comes from utilities, registries and corporate energy buyers rather than DeFi users. The project was still active in 2026: it launched Transactive Lite in March 2026 and continued posting about local energy markets through mid-2026.
