Jambo
Jambo is a mobile infrastructure company building what it calls the world's largest on-chain mobile network, centered on the JamboPhone — a $99 Web3-enabled Android smartphone designed for users in emerging markets. The project's core premise is that mainstream crypto adoption in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America is stalled not by lack of interest but by hardware and access barriers: expensive devices, unreliable banking rails, and complex self-custody setups. Jambo collapses those barriers by shipping purpose-built hardware with crypto wallets, a native dApp store, and earning mechanisms pre-installed at a price point accessible to users in underserved regions.
Problem and Approach
Most Web3 infrastructure is designed for users who already have a smartphone, a bank account, and broadband. Roughly three billion people globally lack reliable internet access, and a much larger share of emerging-market users have never interacted with self-custodied crypto. Jambo's answer is vertical integration: instead of waiting for users to find their way to a wallet app, the wallet, the earning platform, and the dApp ecosystem come installed on the device itself. This removes the onboarding friction that has kept crypto adoption shallow in regions where it could have the greatest economic impact.
Core Mechanism
The JamboPhone runs Android 13 and ships pre-installed with the JamboApp — a superapp that combines a multichain noncustodial wallet, a native dApp store, and a gamified quest platform. Users earn rewards by completing tasks and quests through JamboEarn, accumulating JPoints (loyalty points redeemable for token rewards and airdrops) or directly earning stablecoins such as SPL USDT via Tether's Solana integration. The device includes a hardware security element and biometric authentication to protect private keys.
The dApp store operates outside the Apple and Google commission structures: developers can distribute applications to JamboPhone users without the 30% fee levied by traditional app stores, and without platform-level restrictions on crypto applications. Jambo positions this as a meaningful structural advantage for DeFi and gaming projects trying to reach users in regions where app store restrictions or payment rails make distribution difficult.
Key Features
JamboPhone 2, announced at Solana Breakpoint in September 2024, is the current hardware generation. It features 12GB RAM, Android 13, pre-installed Phantom wallet, the JamboApp superapp, and JamboGPT — an AI assistant embedded at the OS level. The phone ships at $99 plus shipping across 128 countries in multiple colorways.
JamboApp functions as the software layer: a multichain noncustodial wallet supporting Solana, Aptos, and other chains; a native dApp store with gaming and DeFi integrations; and the JamboEarn quest platform. The quest platform drives daily active engagement by rewarding users for on-chain activity, partner promotions, and educational tasks.
JamboEarn converts user participation into crypto rewards. Users accumulate JPoints through quests, which convert to $J tokens and other assets including stablecoin payouts in SPL USDT. EarnDrop campaigns allow ecosystem partners to distribute tokens directly to JamboPhone users as part of promotional or liquidity strategies.
Jarvis, described as an edge computing product, has been announced but carries limited public technical detail as of mid-2026.
$J Token
The $J token is Jambo's native utility token, issued on Solana. Total supply is fixed at one billion tokens. $J serves four primary functions within the ecosystem: paying for services and transactions on the platform, governance participation in protocol decisions, accessing rewards and premium earning tiers, and receiving discounts on fees and purchases. Users can stake $J for network participation rewards.
In January 2025, Jambo completed a $J token generation event and airdrop: the snapshot was taken January 16–21, 2025, with a claim period running January 22 through February 21 on the Galxe platform. Eligible claimants included JamboPhone owners, active JamboApp users, and holders of Solana-native Mad Lads NFTs. The airdrop allocated 100 million $J — 10% of total supply — to early participants. Following the TGE, $J was listed on major centralized exchanges.
Solana Ecosystem Fit
Jambo chose Solana as its primary blockchain layer for three reasons it has cited publicly: high throughput, near-zero transaction fees suited to microtransactions, and a developer ecosystem dense in consumer applications. The Solana Foundation collaborated with Jambo on financial inclusion initiatives in emerging markets, with Foundation President Lily Liu engaging publicly with co-founder James Zhang on stablecoin adoption in the developing world. Tether integrated SPL USDT as Jambo's primary stablecoin reward currency. Pre-installed Phantom wallet makes JamboPhone devices immediate participants in the Solana ecosystem from first boot.
Mad Lads' inclusion in the $J airdrop reflects deliberate positioning within Solana's NFT and community layer, not just its DeFi infrastructure. James Zhang has spoken at Consensus on Protocol Village's Solana track and at Solana Breakpoint. The project's 60-plus ecosystem partners include major Solana-adjacent exchanges and wallets: Coinbase, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gemini, Bitfinex, and Backpack Exchange.
Team and History
Jambo was founded in 2021 by James Zhang and Alice Zhang, both with roots in the Democratic Republic of Congo. James Zhang studied Computer Science at New York University; Alice Zhang holds a finance and business background from Columbia University. James has described the company's mission in personal terms: the DRC and wider sub-Saharan Africa face currency instability and systemic exclusion from global financial infrastructure, gaps that stablecoins and self-custodied crypto can materially address.
In May 2022, Jambo raised a $30 million Series A led by Paradigm. Additional investors include Pantera Capital, Tiger Global, Delphi Digital, Alliance DAO, Jupiter, Hashed, GSR, Coinbase Ventures, and OKX Ventures — a combination of top-tier crypto-native funds and crossover growth investors.
By September 2025, the company reported crossing one million blockchain-enabled phones distributed. As of early 2026, Jambo reports over 11 million active wallets across 128 countries.
Security
The JamboPhone 2 includes a dedicated hardware security element and biometric authentication for private key protection. No independent smart contract audits for the $J token or JamboApp protocols have been published in documentation reviewed for this profile.
