Jambo

Jambo Technology is a blockchain infrastructure company building an onchain mobile network through affordable Web3 smartphones and a companion superapp, targeting the billions of underserved users across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia who lack access to traditional financial services.

The Problem Jambo Is Solving

More than three billion people in emerging markets remain excluded from global financial infrastructure. Conventional cryptocurrency onboarding requires reliable internet, a desktop or premium smartphone, and familiarity with complex wallet interfaces — barriers that effectively exclude large populations in regions where mobile penetration is growing rapidly but banking access is still sparse. Jambo's thesis is that hardware-led distribution, paired with an opinionated software stack, is the fastest path to putting onchain finance within reach of these users at scale.

The JamboPhone

The flagship product is the JamboPhone, a Web3-native Android smartphone priced at $99. The second-generation model — JamboPhone 2 — was unveiled by co-founder James Zhang on the main stage at Solana Breakpoint in October 2024. The device ships preconfigured with a built-in non-custodial wallet, a dApp store, JamboGPT (an AI assistant fine-tuned for crypto), and a curated selection of partner applications, so users can interact with onchain services out of the box without any setup.

Hardware specifications are mid-range by global standards but purpose-built for the target market: a MediaTek T606 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, a 6.5-inch display, dual-lens camera, 4,900 mAh battery, and Android 13 OS. The phone operates across global network bands, enabling connectivity in 128+ countries. By mid-2025 Jambo had sold over one million JamboPhones and reported more than 11 million active wallets created through the platform.

The JamboApp and Superapp Stack

Alongside the hardware, Jambo operates a software platform built around four interlocked products:

JamboEarn is a gamified quest platform where users complete tasks — connecting wallets, trying partner dApps, completing tutorials — and earn $J tokens as rewards. The quest system doubles as a distribution engine for partner protocols, directing engaged users toward new DeFi applications and games.

JamboPlay is an integrated dApp store offering blockchain-based games and decentralized applications, curated for the JamboPhone's hardware profile and the connectivity conditions typical of emerging markets.

JamboWallet is a native multichain non-custodial wallet that supports Solana, Aptos, and EVM-compatible networks. Users can manage assets, receive quest rewards, and interact with partner protocols directly within the wallet interface.

JamboGPT is an AI chatbot integrated into the device and app, fine-tuned specifically for cryptocurrency domain knowledge to help first-time users navigate onchain concepts, answer wallet questions, and discover new earning opportunities.

A separate product called Jarvis — positioned as an edge computing offering — is listed on Jambo's website but has not yet been detailed in public documentation.

The $J Token on Solana

Jambo launched its native utility token, $J, on the Solana blockchain in January 2025. The Token Generation Event (TGE) was held January 22, 2025, with the token listing simultaneously on OKX, Bybit, Bitget, and other major exchanges. Solana was selected as the token's home chain due to its high throughput and low transaction fees, which are practical requirements for a network aiming to serve users in cost-sensitive markets.

Total supply is fixed at one billion $J tokens, allocated across the following categories: Early Contributors (30%), Treasury (27%), Team (15%), Community (15%), Airdrop (10%), and Liquidity and Exchanges (3%). At launch, Jambo distributed 100 million $J tokens as an airdrop to early participants and JamboPhone holders.

Within the ecosystem, $J functions as a utility token that fuels quest rewards through JamboEarn, enables discounts on purchases and services, handles partner payouts, and provides incentives for referral activity. The phone itself was sold via Solana Pay during its initial rollout in collaboration with Solana Superteam chapters, and rewards distributed through the app denominate payouts in SPL USDT (Solana's version of the Tether stablecoin).

Ecosystem Partners and Integrations

Jambo has signed more than 60 ecosystem partners across exchanges, wallets, and DeFi protocols. Publicly named integrations include Coinbase, OKX, Phantom, Bybit, Bitget, Gemini, Tether, Bitfinex, and Backpack Exchange. The breadth of exchange support reflects the project's focus on converting JamboPhone users into active onchain participants who need fiat on-ramps as much as they need wallet functionality.

Team and Backing

Jambo was founded in 2022 by James and Alice Zhang. James Zhang has cited a family history of investment in Africa's economic development as the motivating context for the company's geographic focus. The founding team has not disclosed extensive individual backgrounds in public documentation.

Investor backing is substantial for a hardware-software project at this stage. The Series A was led by Paradigm, with participation from Pantera Capital, Tiger Global, Coinbase Ventures, OKX Ventures, and Delphi Digital. The fundraise provided capital for phone manufacturing at scale and for expanding the software ecosystem.

Security and Audits

No public smart contract audits for the $J token or Jambo platform contracts have been disclosed in available documentation. Users interacting with JamboWallet or holding $J tokens should treat the absence of published audit reports as a standard risk factor. The non-custodial wallet design means users retain custody of private keys, which limits platform-level custody risk, but on-chain contract security disclosures remain incomplete at the time of writing.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Jambo's connection to Solana extends beyond token infrastructure. The JamboPhone 2 launch at Solana Breakpoint 2024 signaled a deliberate alignment with the Solana ecosystem, and the project's use of Solana Pay, SPL USDT, and the native $J SPL token embeds it into Solana's payments and consumer stack. For Solana, Jambo represents a distinct user acquisition vector: millions of first-time crypto users in emerging markets onboarding directly onto Solana-native infrastructure rather than migrating from other chains. The scale of wallet creation — over 11 million active wallets by mid-2025 — makes Jambo one of the larger single contributors to Solana's active address counts globally.
