Solana has reclaimed top spot in daily x402 transaction count, ending Base's six-month run. The network commands 70% of monthly x402 volume across all chains.

Solana SOL$97.15-0.2% has reclaimed the lead in daily x402 transaction count, surpassing Base for the first time since January, Crypto Briefing reported on August 25. The milestone ends six months in which Base held the top position across the x402 micropayment protocol, a standard used primarily by AI agents to pay for online services in USDC.

By mid-August 2026, Solana commands approximately 70% of monthly x402 volume across all chains, according to x402scan.com. The network has processed more than 35 million cumulative x402 transactions since the protocol launched, per Crypto Briefing.

Six Months to the Flip: How the x402 Race Unfolded

The competitive history between the two chains in x402 goes back to January 20, 2026, when Solana first edged Base in daily transaction count: 518,400 to 505,000, a margin of 2.6%, per Crypto Briefing. Base recovered quickly and held the lead for roughly six months, a period during which Solana's share held near parity but never crossed back into first place.

The reversal that produced a 70% monthly volume share is not a single-day spike. x402scan's per-network data shows a sustained shift in where AI agent payment traffic has been routing through August.

BlockRun's AI Gateway and the Ramp Integration

Solana developer matthew (@yo_itsmatt) attributed the transaction count flip primarily to BlockRun's AI gateway choosing to route its agent traffic through Solana, citing x402scan network data. BlockRun operates a payment infrastructure layer that channels AI agent micropayments across chains; its routing preference now lands materially on Solana.

That shift follows Ramp's August 21 announcement of x402 AI agent wallet capabilities on Solana, targeting its network of more than 70,000 businesses. The Ramp integration (covered here when it launched) gave enterprise back-office systems a direct path to x402-native autonomous payments on Solana. As those systems activated, their downstream transaction volume began registering in the per-network count.

The dollar-volume side of the same trend was visible earlier: AI agents settled $3.3 million in USDC through x402 in a single week, a figure this publication reported August 24.

What x402 Measures and Why Transaction Count Matters

x402 repurposes the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code as an open standard for on-chain micropayments. When an AI agent or application requests a paid resource, the server returns a 402 response; the client attaches a signed USDC microtransaction and retries the request. The x402 Foundation, which operates under the Linux Foundation, runs the standard with zero protocol fees; only nominal network costs apply. Nearly all x402 payments settle in USDC.

Transaction count, rather than dollar volume alone, captures adoption at the infrastructure level. A payment protocol built for machine-to-machine commerce succeeds when autonomous systems generate transactions continuously at negligible per-unit cost. Solana's sub-cent fees and sub-second block times make that mode of operation viable at scale; Base operates on Ethereum's rollup model, which carries higher per-transaction overhead for high-frequency workloads.

Across all chains, x402 processed 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over the past 30 days, per x402.org, engaging 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers.

Solana completed more than 100 million user transactions per day across each of the six sessions ending August 24, with network-wide activity (including reverted transactions) exceeding 200 million on the busiest days of that window, per Solana Compass analytics. x402 traffic is a subset of that total, concentrated in AI-driven micropayment flows. That the x402 share moved from a 2.6% first-time margin in January to 70% monthly share by August reflects compounding enterprise routing decisions rather than organic user growth alone.
