Solana Closes August With First Monthly Gain in 10 Months as Institutions and Governance Converge
SOL closed August 2026 up roughly 46%, its first monthly green close after 10 consecutive declines, as cumulative ETF inflows hit $1.34B and SGP-0002 passed.
SOL closed August 2026 up roughly 46%, ending a ten-month run of monthly declines that had stretched since October 2025. At its August 27 high, SOL reached $110.38, its strongest price since late January, before closing the month near $106. Three distinct developments drove the recovery: institutional capital flowing through a maturing ETF market, Solana SOL$102.55-4.5%'s first binding on-chain governance vote settling a months-long supply debate, and a set of protocol upgrades that went live during the same four-week window.
$1.34 Billion in US Spot ETF Inflows, Bitwise BSOL Crosses $1 Billion in AUM
The nine US spot Solana ETF products that launched on October 28, 2025 have accumulated $1.34 billion in cumulative net inflows, with August producing the strongest calendar month of the year. Weekly inflows reached $153 million, a 2026 record. The peak day was August 27, when $60.91 million moved into the products, the third-largest single-day figure since the category launched.
Bitwise's BSOL became the first US Solana ETF to cross $1 billion in assets under management, a milestone covered when it was confirmed alongside Goldman Sachs's institutional position. BSOL holds approximately 9.3 million SOL and accounts for roughly 77 to 80% of all capital flowing into the category. The nine products together hold a combined AUM of approximately $1.49 billion.
The competing products include Grayscale (GSOL), Fidelity (FSOL), Morgan Stanley (MSOL), VanEck (VSOL), and 21Shares (TSOL).
Goldman Sachs Discloses $88M SOL Position, Schwab Opens Spot Access to 39 Million Accounts
Institutional exposure expanded beyond the ETF products themselves. Goldman Sachs disclosed approximately $88.1 million in Solana ETF holdings in its Q2 2026 13F filing, the largest known single position among institutional holders. Charles Schwab, which manages $12 trillion in client assets across roughly 39 million accounts, announced spot SOL access through Schwab Crypto, giving tens of millions of brokerage users direct exposure without an ETF wrapper.
DeFi Development Corp. (ticker: DFDV, listed on Nasdaq) purchased approximately 19,000 SOL at an average of $98.14 during August, raising its total holdings to roughly 2.33 million SOL.
SGP-0002 Passes 67%, Solana's First Binding On-Chain Governance Vote
SGP-0002, the proposal to double Solana's annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%, passed with 67.001% support, clearing the two-thirds supermajority required for a binding on-chain outcome. The vote closed at epoch 1024 on August 28. Passage came down to the final hours: Kraken's no-vote against both supply proposals briefly dropped support below the 66.67% threshold with under three hours remaining, before the final tally landed above the line.
The economic effect of SGP-0002 is that Solana's SOL supply will inflate at a rate that decreases roughly twice as fast each year, reducing projected new issuance by approximately 18.9 million SOL over six years while preserving the network's 1.5% long-run inflation floor. Implementation requires SIMD-0607 to merge into the Solana codebase, converting the governance outcome into an active protocol parameter.
The structural significance of the vote is separate from its economics. SGP-0002 is Solana's first binding on-chain governance decision: a question put to validators and stakers, voted on-chain, with the result enforced at the protocol level. The mechanism is now established for future governance questions.
300ms Slot Times, 1.318B Weekly Transactions, and September's Upgrade Schedule
Protocol improvements moved in parallel with the institutional developments. Solana activated 300ms slot times at epoch 1024 on August 28, reducing block time from 350ms. This is the second step of the SIMD-0525 roadmap toward a 200ms target.
Network throughput reached its own records during the month. Solana processed 1.318 billion non-vote transactions in the week of August 17 to 23, an all-time high and the fourth consecutive week above one billion. July closed with 4.2 billion total non-vote transactions, a 13.5% increase over June, per bitcoin.com reporting. Solana DEXs posted a ninth consecutive week above Bybit, Coinbase, and Kraken on combined spot volume. Per Solana Compass analytics, daily DEX volume ranged from $4.27 billion on August 12 to $7.94 billion on August 28, the day SGP-0002 passed and 300ms slot times activated, with each of the final ten days of the month exceeding $6.7 billion.
Daily DEX volume peaked at $8.24B on August 5 before a mid-month trough of $4.27B on August 12, then re-accelerated through the close. The second peak of $7.94B landed on August 28, when SGP-0002 passed and 300ms slot times activated. Source: Solana Compass analytics, Aug 2-30 2026.

Transaction V1 raises the maximum transaction size from 1,232 to 4,096 bytes, expanding what developers can pack into a single on-chain call. SIMD-0437, a rent reduction that could lower developer storage deposits by up to 90%, moved to testnet during August. Alpenglow, a consensus protocol redesign, targets an October mainnet deployment.
The month's moves did not arrive in sequence. Governance, faster blocks, institutional disclosures, and throughput records accumulated within the same four-week window. The individual stories were covered as they happened; the month-end view is that the structural pieces are each in place: a working binding governance mechanism, reduced block times, a pending rent reduction, and direct distribution through Schwab's 39 million accounts.
