Anza's official account posted at 03:20 UTC this morning: "300ms going effective in about 12 hours boys." The post quoted @readylayerone's epoch timeline showing the countdown to epoch 1024, and follows three days after Anza CEO Brennan Watt confirmed the feature gate was queued for this epoch on August 25.

The reduction is the network's second in eight days. Epoch 1020 activated on August 21, moving Solana from 400ms to 350ms, the first slot time change since the network launched in 2020. Today's step completes a 25% reduction from that 400ms genesis baseline, putting SOL on its fastest slot time in network history.

What SIMD-0525 Changes at Epoch 1024 and What Stays the Same

The 300ms feature gate is a targeted change: each slot shortens by 50ms, while the number of ticks per slot, leader span, and slots per epoch all stay the same. Total blockspace is unchanged. The network produces the same number of slots per epoch; it just produces them faster.

What does shift is the window a block leader holds control over transaction ordering. At 300ms, a validator's monopoly over block building runs 50ms shorter than at 350ms. The Solana Foundation's SIMD-0525 upgrade documentation cites this directly as an improvement to censorship resistance: a shorter leader window means a narrower frame for any single validator to reorder or delay transactions.

Progression to 300ms was conditional on the 350ms stage clearing acceptable block skip rates. The network held: through epoch 1021, Solana's skip rate stayed at approximately 0.077%, well within the threshold Anza and the Foundation treat as safe to advance. The gate moved from pending to scheduled as a result.

SIMD-0525 Roadmap: 400ms to 200ms in Four Steps

SIMD-0525 targets a full halving of Solana's slot time from 400ms to 200ms across four 50ms reductions:

  • Epoch 1020 (Aug 21): 400ms โ†’ 350ms, activated
  • Epoch 1024 (Aug 28): 350ms โ†’ 300ms, activating today
  • Next step: 300ms โ†’ 250ms, pending, conditional on skip rate data
  • Final target: 250ms โ†’ 200ms

The Solana Foundation's upgrade page describes the schedule as "explicitly tentative and subject to change," with each stage conditional on the network maintaining stable performance. Anza controls the feature gate queuing for each step; the two reductions so far have proceeded on a roughly one-week cadence between epochs.

Epoch 1024 also marks the close of the Solana network governance vote on SGP-0001 through SGP-0003, a separate milestone running alongside the technical upgrade.

Why 50ms Matters for DEX Latency, HFT, and Block Builders

The practical effect of faster slots runs across several parts of the Solana application stack. DEXs running limit order books or automated market makers route orders within single slots, so a 50ms reduction narrows the gap between order submission and on-chain settlement. For protocols matching trades at the slot boundary, throughput and precision both improve at 300ms.

High-frequency trading strategies routed through Solana depend on timing between price discovery and execution. At 300ms, the latency budget for reading the mempool, constructing a transaction, and landing it in the same slot is 50ms tighter than it was three days ago.

The most direct effects hit MEV. Block searchers have a shorter window at 300ms for bundle construction and tip calculations. Jito JTO$0.476-12.1% bundles ran at around 7% of network transactions through the 350ms epoch, with 2,559 SOL in daily tips reaching validators as of August 27. This raises the minimum latency requirement for competitive block building, which tends to advantage validators and searchers running lower-latency infrastructure.

The SIMD-0525 proposal originated in SIMD Discussion 469 with censorship resistance as the stated primary goal, but the downstream effects on trading infrastructure are the practical reason the Solana DeFi community has tracked the rollout at each epoch boundary.
