Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms at Epoch 1020, First Reduction Since Network Launch
Solana activated SIMD-0525 at epoch 1020, cutting slot time from 400ms to 350ms for the first time since the network launched. Four more steps target 200ms.
Solana SOL$91.79+6.6% validators opened epoch 1020 on August 21 writing blocks at 350 milliseconds, the first slot time reduction the network has made since its launch. The 400ms ceiling held since early in Solana's history. SIMD-0525 broke it.
Jacob Creech, developer relations lead at the Solana Foundation, confirmed the milestone on X as epoch 1020 activated:
The official @solana announcement framed the sequence: 400ms โ 350ms โ 300ms โ 250ms โ 200ms. Four further 50ms cuts, each requiring a fresh supermajority validator approval before it proceeds. Progress is tracked live at solana.com/200ms, with real-time readouts for current slot time, validator stake by Agave client version, and epoch progress.
What SIMD-0525 Changed at Epoch 1020
Feature activation occurred at slot 440,208,000, the first slot of epoch 1019. A mandatory one-epoch delay follows each activation, giving validators time to upgrade before the change takes effect. Epoch 1020 is where the new clock started.
Shorter slots come with proportional cuts to per-block compute budgets. At 400ms, each block held a ceiling of 100 million compute units (CUs). At 350ms, that becomes 87.5 million CUs per George Tsagkarakis's technical breakdown on egamers.io. The reduction preserves the effective per-second throughput: through the full roadmap, the approximate ceiling holds at 250 million CUs per second. Blocks arrive more often; each block carries less. SIMD-0525 also trims ancillary per-slot allocations alongside compute, including account writes, vote budgets, data shred counts, and partitioned reward slots.
Anza engineered the reduction so that network capacity per second stays roughly constant across all stages.
In the six days before epoch 1020, Solana Compass network analytics recorded an average of 1,710 user TPS and 27.7% compute utilization against the 400ms block ceiling. Daily user transactions peaked at 216 million on August 19. At that utilization level, the proportional per-slot budget reduction at 350ms leaves builders well within the available headroom.
The leader window compresses at each step. Validators produce four consecutive slots per leader turn. At 400ms that window ran 1.6 seconds; at 350ms it is 1.4 seconds; at 200ms it would be 0.8 seconds. A shorter window reduces the period during which any single validator controls transaction ordering, a structural improvement to censorship resistance.
Epoch duration also shifts. Epochs remain fixed at 432,000 slots. At 400ms an epoch lasted approximately 48 hours; at 350ms it runs closer to 42 hours. At 200ms, epoch cycles would turn over roughly every 24 hours, compressing validator reward distributions, governance vote windows, and SIMD activation timelines.
Solana's 400ms Was a Starting Point
Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana co-founder, offered historical framing when he responded to the milestone announcement: "It took 2 days to go from 800ms to 400ms."
The network launched at 800ms and engineers reduced it to 400ms in the first 48 hours. The 400ms figure has been the baseline since. Reducing it further required sufficient stake on XDP, the high-performance networking layer, before shorter slot durations were practical at scale. As we covered when Anza published the Agave v4.2 release schedule in June, XDP crossing supermajority mainnet stake was the stated prerequisite.
Testing validated the change before it hit mainnet. Testnet held eight continuous hours of stable 350ms blocks in early August, the stability benchmark before an activation date was committed. Epoch 1020 confirms the transition holds at mainnet scale.
Slot Time and Finality Are Different Metrics
Slot time governs how fast validators attempt to produce blocks. At 350ms, that cadence is faster. What slot time does not directly measure is finality, the point at which a produced block becomes cryptographically irreversible. Under TowerBFT, Solana's current consensus, finality sits at approximately 12.8 seconds, covering 32 confirmation slots per FinanceFeeds' Alpenglow analysis.
Alpenglow, the consensus redesign Anza is developing, targets median finality of around 150 milliseconds under simulation. As we covered in the Alpenglow upgrade breakdown, it replaces TowerBFT's voting architecture with a protocol called Votor, targeting activation with Agave 4.3 in October 2026. The SIMD-0326 governance proposal for Alpenglow received approximately 98% validator approval.
The two improvements work on different timescales: faster slots produce blocks more often, and Alpenglow makes each block irreversible sooner. At 200ms slots with 150ms Alpenglow finality, the path from transaction submission to settled could close in well under a second.
The Road to 300ms
The next reduction to 300ms requires its own supermajority vote. Devnet is already running at 300ms targets with 250ms gates activated but not yet effective; testnet is currently operating toward 200ms. Each mainnet step waits for a fresh stability window and cluster approval.
One figure puts the current transition in context: the 100 million CU per-block baseline now scaling down to 87.5 million was itself a recent addition. SIMD-0286 raised Solana's block compute limit from 60 million to 100 million CUs at epoch 1009 in late July. The network raised the per-block ceiling, then the slot time reduction scaled it back proportionally as slot duration shortened. Per-second capacity is approximately unchanged across both moves.
