Solana's 300ms Slot Time Feature Gate Queued for Epoch 1024
Anza CEO Brennan Watt confirmed the 300ms slot time feature gate is now pending on Solana mainnet, set to activate at epoch 1024, around August 28, 2026.
Solana SOL$97.06-5.3% is set for another slot time cut. Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza and the author of SIMD-0525, announced on August 25 that the 300ms slot time feature gate is now pending on Solana mainnet, effective at the start of epoch 1024, approximately three days away, with activation expected around August 28.
Four days earlier, on August 21, the network activated its first slot time reduction at epoch 1020, cutting from 400ms to 350ms for the first time since launch. The 300ms gate is the second of four scheduled reductions in the roadmap.
SIMD-0525 Roadmap: Four Reductions from 400ms to 200ms
SIMD-0525 specifies four feature gate activations stepping from the 400ms baseline through 350ms, 300ms, 250ms, and finally 200ms. Each activation requires a dedicated feature gate to be set; the reduction takes effect at the first slot of the following epoch, giving the network one epoch to synchronize before the change lands. Progress from one step to the next is conditional on the network holding acceptable block skip rates after each cut.
The upgrade roadmap is tracked at solana.com/upgrades/reduced-slot-times.
Epoch 1024 Changes: Shorter Epochs and Proportionally Scaled Slot Limits
At 300ms, each epoch still spans 432,000 slots, but each slot is shorter. That compresses epoch duration from 42 hours at 350ms to 36 hours. Per-slot compute and data limits scale proportionally per the SIMD specification, preserving per-second throughput across the transition: the same amount of work fits into each second of wall-clock time, spread across more, shorter slots.
SIMD-0525 makes the case for the reductions on three fronts. Shorter slots shave confirmation latency: any consensus threshold measured in slots is reached in proportionally less wall-clock time. A validator's leader window shrinks proportionally, narrowing the interval within which a block producer can delay or reorder transactions before the next leader rotates in. Applications that track data freshness in slot counts, including oracle consumers and automated market makers, gain tighter measurement precision as each step lands.
Block Skip Rates Gate the 250ms and 200ms Steps
The two remaining reductions, to 250ms and then 200ms, are not on a fixed schedule. SIMD-0525 frames each activation as contingent on network stability: if block skip rates after a given step are too high, the next gate is not activated. The 350ms step at epoch 1020 produced no stability concerns, which cleared the path for the 300ms gate.
