Anza confirmed the 250ms slot time feature gate is pending on mainnet-beta. It activates at the epoch 1037 boundary, ~05:01 UTC on Friday September 18.

Anza confirmed on September 16 that the 250ms slot time feature gate is now pending activation on Solana SOL$97.06-3.6% mainnet-beta, the third reduction under SIMD-0525 and the final step before the 200ms target. The feature goes live at the epoch 1037 boundary, scheduled for approximately 05:01 UTC on Friday, September 18.

How the Three-Epoch Activation Queue Works

SIMD-0525 feature gates follow a mandatory delay: the gate activates one full epoch after validators vote it in, so the network gets a clean boundary to enforce the new timing consistently. For the 250ms activation, that produces a three-epoch sequence: epoch 1035 (pending), epoch 1036 (feature active at the protocol level), and epoch 1037 when 250ms slots go live.

At the current 300ms rate, each epoch spans roughly 36 hours. The pattern is now familiar: 300ms activated at epoch 1024 following the same three-epoch pipeline about a week after the first reduction.

What Changes at 250ms: Compute Limits and Epoch Timing

Per-slot compute limits scale proportionally with each slot time reduction to preserve the overall transaction processing rate. At 250ms, the maximum block compute units drop to 37.5 million (from 45 million at 300ms), and the writable account compute unit cap falls to 15 million (from 18 million). The hashes-per-tick rate adjusts to 39,062, down from 46,875 at 300ms.

Epoch duration compresses alongside the slot time. The network's fixed 432,000-slot epoch runs approximately 30 hours at 250ms, compared to 36 hours at 300ms and 48 hours at the original 400ms.

The blockhash expiration window, already shortened by previous reductions, tightens further. At 250ms, the 150-block expiry window closes in roughly 37.5 seconds of wall-clock time, giving applications and offline signers less time between blockhash fetch and transaction submission.

Agave v4.3 Upgrade: 25% Stake Target by End of Friday

The day before the activation announcement, Anza called for mainnet-beta validators to bring 25% of stake to Agave v4.3 by end of day Friday, September 18, the same day 250ms goes live. The release candidate, v4.3.0-rc.1, was published on September 11 and is the recommended upgrade for testnet, devnet, and the validators needed for the 25% threshold.

That threshold matters because SIMD-0525 feature gates require sufficient validator stake adoption before the protocol enforces new timing rules. Operators who have not upgraded by the epoch 1037 boundary will be running software that does not natively support 250ms slot processing under the new compute limits.

One Reduction Remains After September 18

The SIMD-0525 roadmap runs five slot-time milestones from the original 400ms. The first reduction went live at epoch 1020 in August. The second followed about a week later. With 250ms scheduled for September 18, one final step to 200ms remains on the roadmap. The 200ms stage is already active on devnet and testnet, according to the official Solana upgrades page.

At 200ms, the maximum block compute units will fall to 30 million and epoch duration to 24 hours, half the 400ms baseline. Anza has not announced a mainnet timeline for that final step.
