Yona Network

Yona Network is a modular Bitcoin Layer 2 (L2) that runs the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) on top of Bitcoin, enabling high-throughput DeFi applications and programmable smart contracts secured by Bitcoin's proof-of-work. Introduced in March 2024 and entering private alpha the following month, Yona was built to address a fundamental gap: Bitcoin holds over a trillion dollars in value but lacks native smart contract capabilities, leaving that capital largely idle relative to more programmable chains.

How Yona Works

Yona operates as a validium rollup — a ZK proof-enforced rollup that writes hash commitments to Bitcoin rather than storing full transaction data on-chain. This keeps Bitcoin's base layer lightweight while preserving trustless verifiability. Execution happens off-chain in the Solana Virtual Machine, which gives Yona throughput exceeding 10,000 transactions per second. That puts Yona's performance on par with Solana mainnet, making it suitable for applications that demand fast finality: order book exchanges, perpetuals markets, and memecoin trading.

The choice of the SVM over the EVM is deliberate. The SVM's parallelized execution model supports capital-efficient financial infrastructure that slower blockchains struggle to deliver. Yona has since expanded this further by integrating Neon Stack — technology developed by Neon EVM — to add full EVM compatibility alongside the existing SVM environment. The result is a dual-VM Bitcoin L2 where both Solana dApps and Ethereum dApps can be ported directly to Bitcoin.

Security Architecture

Yona uses a layered security model that draws from three independent sources:

Bitcoin PoW: Hash commitments are anchored to Bitcoin, linking Yona's state to Bitcoin's base-layer security without burdening it with full transaction data.

EigenLayer AVS: Yona is deployed as an Actively Validated Service on EigenLayer. Operators restake ETH to verify ZK proofs off-chain and certify correctness on-chain, providing Ethereum-rooted crypto-economic security.

Espresso sequencing: Yona uses Espresso for decentralized sequencing, reducing the risks that come with a centralized sequencer — including censorship and single points of failure.

Babylon Chain: BTC Restaking for Validators

In July 2024, Yona integrated with Babylon Chain, a BTC restaking protocol. Through Babylon, Yona validators can lock BTC stakes to secure the network, with slashing conditions enforced for malicious behavior. Babylon's design allows Yona validators to unbond in hours rather than the days or weeks typical of other proof-of-stake systems.

BitcoinOS Partnership

In December 2024, Yona announced a strategic partnership with BitcoinOS (BOS), a zero-knowledge cryptography infrastructure layer for Bitcoin. The collaboration repositioned Yona from a standalone modular platform to a full Bitcoin rollup. Yona now uses BOS's ZK primitives for trustless bridging and state verification. The partnership also bridges Yona to Solana L1 and other SVM-compatible chains — including Molecule, Zeus, and SOON Network — creating a unified SVM ecosystem with Bitcoin at its settlement base.

Bitcoin Asset Coverage and DeFi Use Cases

Yona is designed to work with the full range of Bitcoin-native assets: native BTC, Ordinals, BRC-20 tokens, and Runes. DeFi protocols deployed on Yona can access all of these within a single high-throughput execution environment. Target applications include decentralized exchanges, lending and borrowing protocols, perpetuals, memecoin launchpads, stablecoins, and yield farming.

Competitive Positioning

Yona competes with a growing cohort of Bitcoin L2 projects including Bitlayer, Merlin, and Stacks. Its differentiation centers on three factors: the SVM execution environment, the dual SVM/EVM compatibility unlocked by the Neon Stack integration, and its multi-layered security stack that combines Bitcoin anchoring, Ethereum restaking via EigenLayer, and BTC restaking via Babylon Chain. As of early 2026, Yona maintains an active bridge and DeFi activity on-chain.
