Helius Acquires Light Protocol to Build Solana's Privacy Layer
Helius is acquiring Light Protocol, the team behind Solana's ZK syscalls and ZK Compression, to build a programmable onchain privacy layer for Solana.
Helius hSOL$76.18+2.9% is acquiring Light Protocol, the team that authored Solana's original zero-knowledge syscalls and co-built ZK Compression, to develop a fully programmable onchain privacy layer for Solana.
The acquisition marks a return to roots for Light Protocol. Founded in 2021 with a mission to bring ZK-based privacy to Solana, the team eventually pivoted toward scaling infrastructure, building ZK Compression (a protocol that reduces onchain state costs by up to 1000x) in collaboration with Helius. With that scaling work now shipped and in production, the combined organization plans to apply the same cryptographic foundations toward the original goal: private transactions at the application layer.
"Privacy is the single most important primitive we can build and scale on Solana," said Jorrit Palfner, CEO of Light Protocol. "Joining Helius means we get to finish what we started with the engineering depth, institutional trust, and distribution to make privacy the default."
From Syscalls to Compression to Privacy
Light Protocol's footprint in Solana's core infrastructure is substantial. The team contributed the sol_poseidon hash function syscall and the sol_alt_bn128_group_op and sol_alt_bn128_compression syscalls (the altBN128 group operations that underpin elliptic-curve pairings used in ZK proof verification). These are not application-layer additions; they are native Solana VM capabilities that any privacy or ZK application on Solana now depends on.
ZK Compression, co-developed with Helius and publicly presented at Breakpoint 2024, took those same cryptographic primitives in a different direction, compressing program-derived accounts and token accounts to reduce rent costs by orders of magnitude. The protocol remains live and in use.
Under the acquisition, Helius states that ZK Compression will be unaffected. The announcement says existing users will see "nothing changes, except that the team maintaining these products now has more engineers and a much louder mandate." The Light Token SDK is being sunset for existing users.
A Programmable Privacy Layer
The combined team's stated roadmap targets a fully onchain privacy layer featuring encrypted balances, private payments, and confidential markets, with auditability and selective disclosure built in. That combination of privacy with compliance hooks positions the work differently from earlier Solana privacy attempts, such as the now-defunct Elusiv, which struggled to scale and eventually wound down.
Helius plans to open access to the new privacy infrastructure for software developers during 2026. The company is also actively hiring across engineering teams and has invited privacy-focused startups and institutions to collaborate.
The Solana Compass project page for Light Protocol notes the team's earlier framing around Private Solana Programs (smart contract logic executed using ZK proof circuits), which aligns with the current roadmap direction. That work predates the ZK Compression pivot and appears to be the technical thread being picked back up.
Why Helius Gives Light Protocol a Different Starting Point
What changes with this acquisition is the organizational context around that vision. Light Protocol has spent four years as a research-and-infrastructure startup operating at the edges of Solana's technical stack. Helius brings production-scale RPC and API infrastructure, an institutional customer base, and a developer community already building production applications on Solana.
The Helius announcement frames privacy as "the final scaling frontier for blockchains," arguing that without it, the ecosystem is "building faster surveillance technology." The Block confirmed the deal independently. That framing echoes the pitch Jorrit Palfner made on a Lightspeed podcast episode in late 2023, when he described Solana's implementation of ZK precompiles as a foundation that would make privacy economically viable on the network.
The timeline between that conversation and this acquisition is roughly two and a half years. In that window, Light shipped the syscalls, co-built the compression layer, and is now being absorbed into the infrastructure company it collaborated with most closely. The privacy layer that was the original mission now has a funded, production-grade home from which to build.
