In a detailed Genfinity interview published August 7, Helius hSOL$88.90+1.9% CEO Mert Mumtaz publicly detailed the architecture of Rings, the company's programmable Solana privacy protocol. The product is live in private beta on Solana devnet, per helius.dev/privacy, with mainnet deployment gated on completing three concurrent security audits and formal verification of its zero-knowledge circuits.

Rings is the direct product of Helius's June 10, 2026 acquisition of Light Protocol, the team that authored Solana's original zero-knowledge syscalls: the sol_poseidon hash function and the altbn elliptic curve pairings. Those primitives also underpin ZK Compression, which Light Protocol co-developed with Helius and which reduces onchain state costs by up to 1,000x, per Helius's acquisition announcement.

What Rings Does: Confidential and Anonymous Modes on Native Solana

Rings operates as a set of native Solana programs, not a layer-2 or sidechain, settling directly onchain without new trust assumptions. The official product page describes two modes.

A Confidential Ring encrypts the asset type and transfer amount while leaving sender and recipient addresses visible on-chain. An Anonymous Ring encrypts all four fields: sender, recipient, asset, and amount.

Both modes work within configurable compliance envelopes. Ring operators can define which assets are permitted, set transfer thresholds that require additional approval, maintain allowlists and blocklists, and grant auditor visibility for regulatory or accounting review. Freeze and thaw capabilities allow balances to be held during investigations. Operators choose between supplying their own compliance stack or using Helius's managed KYC and sanctions screening service.

The distribution model has two tracks: institutional rings with bespoke policy configurations tuned to specific requirements, and a permissionless public ring for retail users who want encrypted balances without a custom compliance layer.

MEV Protection From Encrypted Order Flow

Encrypting balances has a structural consequence for trading: searchers cannot read order flow, which removes the information advantage that enables front-running. In the Genfinity interview, Mumtaz described this as making Rings MEV-proof by design, a property Helius says satisfies regulatory requirements for securities venues where front-running constitutes a compliance violation.

Three Audits and Formal ZK Verification Before Mainnet

The helius.dev/privacy page states that Rings will be audited and formally verified before mainnet. According to Mumtaz in the Genfinity interview, three security audits are running concurrently alongside formal verification of the ZK circuits, a step that validates the mathematical properties of the zero-knowledge proofs themselves, distinct from standard smart-contract audits.

Mumtaz gave August as a target for mainnet, with a two-month conservative window putting the outer bound at October 2026. No committed date appears on the product page beyond the audit prerequisite.

The ZK Foundations Light Protocol Built Over Four Years

Light Protocol spent four years building the cryptographic primitives Rings depends on. Its team contributed the sol_poseidon syscall, implementing the Poseidon hash function optimized for zero-knowledge circuit efficiency, and the altbn syscalls that expose BN254 curve operations required for elliptic-curve-based ZK proofs. These run at the Solana runtime level.

Solana's recent activation of native ZK cryptographic primitives including BN254, BLS12-381, and ZK ElGamal provides the runtime layer these protocols build on.

Jorrit Palfner, CEO of Light Protocol, told Crypto Briefing: "Privacy is the precondition for Solana to become the chain that traditional finance operates on."

Light's existing Token SDK features are being sunset as the team redirects toward Rings development, per Helius's acquisition announcement. Existing ZK Compression builders are unaffected.

Regulatory Context: Compliance Built In, Tornado Cash Precedent Noted

The regulatory history of onchain privacy tools weighs on any new entrant in this space. Crypto Briefing noted the Tornado Cash enforcement action as the relevant precedent for regulators assessing privacy protocols. Helius is addressing the concern in the architecture: compliance controls are a native feature of Rings rather than a retrofit, and the managed KYC and sanctions screening option is designed to let regulated institutions participate without operating outside their compliance frameworks.

Whether that architecture satisfies regulators in practice will depend on how enforcement agencies interpret programmable privacy once the protocol reaches mainnet.
