About

Western Union

Western Union is a global money transfer and payments company founded in 1851 that processes over $102.9 billion in cross-border transfer principal annually, serving approximately 100 million customers across 200+ countries. In October 2025 the company announced USDPT (U.S. Dollar Payment Token), a regulated stablecoin built on Solana, and brought it live in May 2026, marking a structural shift in how one of the world's largest remittance networks intends to settle cross-border money movement.

The Problem

Traditional cross-border payment rails—correspondent banking, SWIFT—are slow, expensive, and unavailable outside banking hours. Liquidity parked at intermediary banks generates idle float while settlement can take days. Western Union, despite its 360,000+ global agent locations and presence in 130+ currencies, has relied on the same legacy infrastructure as every other major remittance operator. USDPT is designed to replace that settlement layer with a blockchain-native alternative offering near-instant finality, 24/7 availability, and meaningfully lower per-transaction costs.

How USDPT Works

USDPT is a USD-denominated payment stablecoin redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars. It is issued exclusively by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the United States, operating under supervision from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Reserves backing USDPT consist of bank deposits, U.S. Treasury bills, and similar short-duration cash equivalents held under Anchorage Digital's custody.

Western Union selected Solana as the token's blockchain home for the network's combination of high throughput, low per-transaction cost, and near-instant settlement finality—properties that align with the real-world payment requirement of moving money at scale around the clock. Anchorage Digital Bank holds exclusive authority over USDPT minting and redemption, embedding federal bank regulation at the issuance level rather than as an afterthought.

Three Product Tracks

Treasury and Agent Settlement. The first and most immediate use of USDPT is internal: replacing Western Union's correspondent banking arrangements for settling with its global agent network. On-chain settlement with USDPT enables near-instant, 24/7 finality between Western Union and agents in the field, reducing idle float balances and enabling more dynamic liquidity management across the distribution infrastructure.

Digital Asset Network. The second track connects licensed virtual currency exchanges and digital asset custodians to Western Union's physical cash network. Through the Digital Asset Network, customers of partner exchanges in select markets can purchase and hold USDPT within their exchange app and then cash out in local fiat currency at any Western Union agent location worldwide. The mechanism creates an on-ramp/off-ramp bridge between on-chain dollar balances and physical cash that operates inside Western Union's existing compliance and risk infrastructure.

Stable by Western Union. The consumer-facing product, targeted for launch in 40+ countries in 2026, combines a self-custody USDPT wallet with a Visa payment card in a single mobile application. Customers can hold funds in digital dollars and spend them anywhere Visa is accepted; recipients of remittances can receive funds loaded directly to stablecoin-backed cards, redeemable at merchants or convertible to cash at Western Union locations.

Crossmint and the Developer Layer

Western Union partnered with Crossmint, a Solana-native wallet infrastructure and payment API provider, to make USDPT accessible to the broader developer community. Through Crossmint's APIs, application builders can embed USDPT transfers into their products, allowing any Solana application to send funds on-chain while recipients cash out through Western Union's physical agent network. This opens Western Union's distribution footprint to fintech developers without requiring a direct integration with Western Union's core systems.

Regulatory and Compliance Structure

USDPT's regulatory design is intentional and central to the product. Anchorage Digital Bank N.A.'s national trust bank charter from the OCC makes it the first federally regulated institution to issue a bank-chartered stablecoin, meaning USDPT issuance is subject to federal bank supervision from day one. Western Union applies its own AML, KYC, and sanctions screening on top of this foundation—the same compliance infrastructure it operates across its traditional payments network.

The U.S. GENIUS Act, which established a federal framework for payment stablecoins, provided regulatory clarity that Western Union cited as supporting its timeline from announcement to launch. The combination of a federally chartered issuer and Western Union's compliance layer is explicitly positioned as the path to operating USDPT across the company's full 200+ country footprint over time.

Company and Ecosystem Context

Western Union reported $102.9 billion in cross-border principal processed in 2024. CEO Devin McGranahan described the initiative as bringing "the benefits of digital dollars to our network and reach virtually every corner of the globe." Competitors in the remittance and digital payments space—MoneyGram, PayPal, Stripe—have made parallel stablecoin moves, with MoneyGram building on USDC and the Stellar network and PayPal's PYUSD reaching $2.7 billion in market cap since its 2023 launch. Western Union's pairing of Solana with federally chartered issuance represents the most institutionally structured entry in that cohort to date.

Western Union's choice of Solana validates the network's throughput and cost profile for enterprise-grade, regulated financial applications. The Crossmint integration embeds USDPT into Solana's developer tooling ecosystem. USDPT is not a speculative asset—it is a regulated payment instrument engineered to substitute blockchain settlement for correspondent banking, adding institutional transaction volume and real-world payment utility to the Solana network.
