Western Union and Rain Launch Stablecard on Solana in 37 Markets
Western Union and Rain launched Stablecard on August 4, 2026, enabling USDPT-backed Visa payments at 175 million merchant locations across 37 countries.
Western Union Western Union and Rain Rain launched Stablecard on August 4, 2026, a USDPT-backed Visa card available in 37 countries from day one. The card draws on Western Union's USDPT stablecoin, issued by Anchorage Digital Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. on Solana, and converts stablecoin balances to local currency automatically at the point of sale. It is downloadable from the App Store and Google Play with Apple Pay and Google Pay compatibility, accepted at Visa's 175 million merchant locations globally.
Western Union plans to expand to 60 or more markets by year-end.
Remittance Costs: 6.35% Average vs. Below 1% on Stablecoin Rails
The average cost of sending $200 internationally sits at 6.35%, according to Forkast. The UN Sustainable Development Goals target 3% for the same corridor. Stablecoin rails bring that cost below 1%.
The corridors Western Union typically serves flow from higher-income economies into lower-income ones with limited banking access. In those markets, the cost spread is the entire value proposition. Western Union moved $107.4 billion in cross-border principal in FY2025 across 285.9 million consumer-to-consumer transactions, per its official press release. President and CEO Devin McGranahan said the product combines "the stability of a dollar-backed digital asset with the scale of Western Union's global network and Visa's acceptance footprint."
How USDPT Works: Anchorage Digital's Regulated Stablecoin on Solana
USDPT launched May 4, 2026, issued on Solana by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., the first federally chartered crypto bank in the United States. The token is redeemable 1:1 for USD and qualifies under the GENIUS Act, the stablecoin legislation passed in 2026. As of the Stablecard launch, $7.4 million USDPT was in circulation across 162 addresses, about 0.05% of the $15.8 billion in stablecoins on Solana, per The Defiant.
That small circulating supply reflects USDPT's phased rollout. Before Stablecard, the token had been used primarily for agent settlements and was listed on Bybit for Latin American exchange access in June 2026. Stablecard is the first consumer-facing product built on those rails.
Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley described the bank as "purpose-built to issue stablecoins at scale," adding that the partnership demonstrates "how regulated stablecoins can power faster, cheaper, and more inclusive money movements globally," per The Defiant. Compass covered Western Union's earlier Solana build when the company joined the Solana Foundation Enterprise Developer Platform in June 2026.
Rain's Card Stack: Visa and Mastercard Principal Member
Rain supplies the card infrastructure behind Stablecard. The company holds principal member status with both Visa and Mastercard and counts 100 or more organizational partners, per The Defiant, with processing reach across 175 million or more merchant locations in 200 or more territories. Its role covers the processing backbone, the mobile application, and the embedded wallet that abstracts the Solana layer from the end user. For most Stablecard users, the blockchain is invisible.
Western Union's Business Context: Revenue Flat, Digital Growing
The Stablecard launch comes at a specific point in Western Union's trajectory. Q2 2026 revenue came in at $1.0 billion, down 1% year-over-year, while Branded Digital transactions rose 25% year-over-year and now account for 43% of consumer transfers, per The Defiant. The company operates 360,000 agent locations and serves over 100 million customers globally, per Forkast.
Stablecard gives Western Union a product where it controls both the stablecoin and the distribution channel. That is structurally different from the company's traditional role as a cash-transfer intermediary, where margin is compressed at every step. The agent network remains intact; Stablecard adds a settlement rail that costs a fraction of the traditional one to operate.
Stablecoin Cards Are Becoming a Category
The competitive field is moving fast. Remitly has partnered with Bridge (the stablecoin infrastructure company Stripe acquired), while Zelle launched ZLUSD on June 11, 2026. Wise has remained publicly skeptical of stablecoin adoption, according to Forkast.
Western Union's advantage is distribution at a scale none of those competitors match. Whether USDPT circulation grows beyond its current $7.4 million depends on how quickly users in the 37 launch markets adopt a product built on a blockchain they will never see.
Sheraz Shere, Solana's Head of Payments, said the launch shows "blockchain technology and regulatory compliance can work hand in hand to transform global payments," per Forkast. For Solana, that matters concretely: the network was chosen because its settlement speed and transaction cost make a sub-1% remittance product viable at Western Union's scale. The GENIUS Act provided the regulatory footing; the chain provided the economics.
