About

Western Union

Western Union is one of the world's largest money transfer operators, founded in 1851 and now operating across more than 200 countries and territories. In 2025, the company announced a strategic pivot into blockchain-based settlement by selecting Solana as the foundation for USDPT, its regulated U.S. dollar stablecoin, marking one of the most significant traditional financial institution entries into the Solana ecosystem.

Core Business

Western Union's primary service enables consumers and businesses to send and receive money internationally through a combination of digital channels—website, mobile app—and a vast physical network of agent locations. Recipients can collect funds as cash, bank deposits, mobile wallet credits, or debit card loads. The company also operates a mobile top-up service and provides currency conversion tools. As of late 2025, quarterly revenue stood at approximately $1 billion, and CEO Devin McGranahan—who joined in December 2021 after senior roles at Fiserv and McKinsey—has set a target of $5 billion in revenue by 2028 through digital transformation.

The Solana Pivot: USDPT

In October 2025, Western Union announced USDPT (U.S. Dollar Payment Token), a fully USD-backed stablecoin built on Solana. The token launched on May 4, 2026, with an initial rollout in the Philippines and Bolivia.

USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., the first federally chartered cryptocurrency bank in the United States, giving the token a regulated issuance backstop that distinguishes it from many existing stablecoins. Fireblocks was selected to power the underlying wallet and settlement infrastructure, with Fireblocks' acquisitions of Dynamic (embedded wallets) and TRES (financial operations platform) also integrated into the stack.

Western Union chose Solana specifically for its high transaction throughput and low latency, which the company describes as eliminating the fragmentation and delay inherent in traditional correspondent banking. The stated goal is to use USDPT as a programmable settlement layer that can move value across its agent network in near real-time, around the clock.

Four Service Channels

Western Union has structured USDPT around four distinct use cases:

Exchange Purchase USDPT is available for purchase through licensed virtual currency exchanges. Users who already hold USDPT can interact with Western Union's broader product suite from there.

Digital Asset Network (DAN) The DAN addresses what Western Union calls "the last mile of the crypto journey." By partnering with crypto wallets and custodians, the network connects digital asset holders to Western Union's global cash agent infrastructure, allowing them to convert digital holdings into local fiat currency at physical agent locations. Western Union expects more than seven DAN partner activations across 2026.

Stable by Western Union This is the consumer-facing product built on USDPT. Launching in 2026 across more than 40 countries, it allows users to hold, send, receive, and spend USDPT through Western Union's existing app and brand experience. The goal is to give consumers in high-inflation or underbanked markets access to a digital dollar without requiring a U.S. bank account.

Treasury and Agent Settlement Perhaps the most operationally significant use case: Western Union uses USDPT to settle with its agent network in near-instant, 24/7 transactions. Traditional agent settlement relies on correspondent banking, which is slow and costly across time zones. By settling in USDPT on Solana, Western Union can reduce float costs and operational friction across its global distribution network.

Partners and Infrastructure

The USDPT ecosystem rests on three institutional partners:

  • Anchorage Digital Bank N.A.: Federal charter holder and official issuer of USDPT, providing regulatory legitimacy as America's first federally regulated crypto bank.
  • Fireblocks: Infrastructure provider for wallet management, settlement operations, and financial controls, incorporating the Dynamic embedded wallet and TRES financial operations platform.
  • Solana: The blockchain layer, selected for throughput and finality characteristics suited to high-volume payment settlement.

Western Union did not disclose any third-party smart contract audit in its public announcements, though Anchorage's federally regulated status implies institutional-grade compliance and custody standards apply to issuance.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Western Union's entry into Solana is notable for its scale and institutional credibility. Rather than issuing a speculative token or launching a standalone DeFi product, Western Union is using Solana as infrastructure for a regulated settlement network that connects to its existing 200-country footprint. The Digital Asset Network in particular positions Solana as an interoperability layer between crypto-native wallets and traditional cash infrastructure—a bridge that few projects of comparable institutional scale have attempted.

The stablecoin market context matters here: at the time of USDPT's launch, USD-backed stablecoins collectively exceeded $300 billion in supply, dominated by Tether's USDT at $189.6 billion and Circle's USDC at $77.6 billion. USDPT enters as a regulated, bank-issued alternative with a built-in distribution network through Western Union's agent locations—a structurally different proposition from permissionless stablecoins.

Status

USDPT launched on May 4, 2026. The initial rollout covered the Philippines and Bolivia. Consumer rollout through "Stable by Western Union" and DAN partner expansion are ongoing through 2026, with the program targeting 40-plus countries. Western Union is publicly traded on the NYSE under the ticker WU.
