About

MetaMask

MetaMask is a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet and Web3 gateway that gives users direct control over their digital assets across multiple blockchain networks, without relying on any centralized intermediary. Launched in 2016 and built by ConsenSys, the wallet has accumulated over 100 million downloads and has processed billions of transactions across more than a decade of continuous operation, making it one of the longest-running and most widely adopted wallets in crypto.

Core Mechanism

MetaMask operates as a non-custodial wallet, meaning users hold their own private keys and no third party can access or freeze their funds. The wallet is available as a browser extension and a mobile app (iOS and Android), and its architecture is built around the concept of a universal gateway to Web3 — users authenticate themselves to decentralized applications (dApps) by connecting MetaMask, signing transactions locally, and broadcasting them to the network. No private key data ever leaves the device.

The wallet's security model is reinforced by real-time transaction simulations, malicious application detection, and MEV protection. Transaction Shield, a subscription add-on, provides up to $10,000 per month in transaction protection and prioritized customer support as an additional safety layer.

Multichain Expansion and Solana Support

MetaMask was originally an Ethereum-first wallet, but 2025 marked a significant pivot toward genuine multichain support. The wallet now supports Solana, Bitcoin, Monad, Sei, and the full range of EVM-compatible networks, allowing users to manage assets across ecosystems without switching wallets.

Solana support launched on July 8, 2025, as a native integration available in both the MetaMask Mobile app and browser extension. Users can create new Solana accounts or import existing ones directly within the MetaMask interface, with automatic balance detection for SOL and SPL tokens. The Solana integration supports sending, receiving, swapping, bridging, and buying tokens, and also enables connections to Solana-based dApps. Security features — including real-time alerts, malicious app detection, and transaction simulation — apply to Solana interactions just as they do on Ethereum. According to MetaMask's announcement, "Solana is just the start," with additional non-EVM network integrations planned.

Key Products and Features

Core Wallet (Extension and Mobile): The primary interface for managing assets, connecting to dApps, approving transactions, and accessing all integrated features. A redesigned UI introduced in 2025 improved transaction review clarity and added multichain account views, letting connected applications interact across multiple networks simultaneously.

MetaMask Swaps and Bridging: Built-in token swapping aggregates liquidity across major decentralized exchanges, and bridging allows users to move assets between chains without leaving the wallet. A fee of 0.875% applies to swaps.

Advanced Trading: MetaMask integrated perpetual futures trading — including up to 50x leverage, powered by Hyperliquid — equity perpetuals, tokenized stocks and funds, and prediction markets directly into the wallet UI. Users can access these instruments without transferring assets to a centralized exchange.

MetaMask Money Account: A yield-bearing stablecoin account offering up to 4% variable APY. The account is built on the Monad blockchain and operates self-custodially, with funds accessible for spending globally.

MetaMask Card: A physical and virtual Mastercard-backed card that allows users to spend their crypto holdings at hundreds of millions of merchants, with cashback rewards on eligible purchases. Card tiers include Virtual and Metal options.

MetaMask Agent Wallet: Released in August 2026, this developer-oriented tool provides programmatic wallet access for AI-driven and automated on-chain workflows. It includes configurable spend limits, protocol allowlisting, and a choice of Guard Mode (conservative security) or Beast Mode (high autonomy), with threat scanning and MEV protection built in.

MetaMask Connect SDK: A developer SDK that enables dApps to integrate wallet connectivity across desktop, mobile, and native applications, with multichain support for EVM networks and Solana. The SDK also includes Embedded Wallets (available for React, Vue, JavaScript, Node, Android, iOS, React Native, Flutter, Unity, and Unreal) and a Smart Accounts Kit for account abstraction.

MetaMask Snaps: An extensibility platform that allows third-party developers to build and publish plugins that extend MetaMask's functionality — adding support for new networks, custom security alerts, and novel wallet features.

Supported Tokens and Assets

MetaMask natively supports ETH and all ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, SOL and SPL tokens on Solana, BTC on Bitcoin, and assets on Monad and Sei. The wallet also supports tokenized stocks, funds, and commodities through its integrated trading features.

Security and Audits

MetaMask has received a "#1 most secure wallet" rating from independent security auditor Coinspect, and the project undergoes regular third-party security audits. On-chain transaction simulations and malicious application detection provide runtime defenses for every supported network. The optional Transaction Shield subscription provides an additional financial guarantee layer. ConsenSys, MetaMask's parent company, maintains a dedicated security team and a public bug bounty program.

Team and Background

MetaMask was created in 2016 by Aaron Davis and Dan Finlay at ConsenSys, the Ethereum software company founded by Ethereum co-creator Joseph Lubin. ConsenSys remains the primary developer and operator of MetaMask. The team operates globally with engineering, product, security, and research functions across multiple disciplines. MetaMask is the flagship consumer product of ConsenSys's suite of Web3 developer tools, which also includes Infura, Linea (a ConsenSys zkEVM L2), and MetaMask Institutional.

Fit in the Solana Ecosystem

MetaMask's entry into Solana represents a meaningful distribution event for the network. With over 100 million wallet downloads and a globally recognized brand, MetaMask introduces a large segment of the existing crypto audience — historically centered on Ethereum and EVM ecosystems — to Solana-based dApps, tokens, and DeFi protocols. Users already familiar with MetaMask's interface can now interact with the Solana ecosystem without adopting a new wallet. For Solana project builders, MetaMask's Connect SDK and Embedded Wallets platform offer a well-documented integration path to reach MetaMask's existing user base on mobile and desktop. The addition of Solana to MetaMask's multichain strategy reflects the network's growing status as a primary destination for users seeking high-throughput, low-cost on-chain activity.
