MetaMask has extended its Gas Station fee coverage to Solana swaps above $200, removing the SOL-holding requirement for its large EVM-native user base.

MetaMask MetaMask announced Tuesday that it will now cover Solana gas fees for swaps above $200, extending its Gas Station feature beyond EVM chains for the first time since the feature launched in February 2025.

The update comes roughly two months after MetaMask completed native Solana account support in May 2026, and targets a specific friction point: users who hold assets on Solana but have no SOL available to pay transaction fees.

How MetaMask Gas Station Works on Solana

Gas Station bundles the network fee into the swap quote so users can complete a transaction without first sourcing the chain's native token. MetaMask launched the feature on Ethereum Mainnet and BNB Smart Chain in February 2025, then expanded coverage to Arbitrum, Polygon, Linea, Base, and Tempo. Solana is the first non-EVM chain to receive Gas Station coverage.

On Solana, the subsidy applies to swaps above $200. Below that threshold, a small SOL balance is still required. Solana network fees typically run below $0.001 per transaction, so the per-swap cost to MetaMask on qualifying trades is negligible.

Who the $200 Threshold Serves

The practical beneficiary is a MetaMask user who holds USDC, USDT, or another Solana asset but has run out of SOL. Previously, executing any swap required bridging or on-ramping SOL specifically for gas. With Gas Station active, a qualifying swap above $200 goes through without that intermediate step.

Users already operating through native Solana tooling have more options. Jupiter JUP$0.196-1.5% Jupiter, Solana's primary swap aggregator, routes swaps without requiring a SOL balance on supported routes and with no minimum swap size. MetaMask's offer is most relevant to its EVM-native user base exploring Solana DeFi for the first time.

MetaMask Swap Costs on Solana: The 0.875% Fee and Gas Coverage

MetaMask charges a 0.875% service fee on swaps, included in the quote. On a $200 swap that meets the Gas Station threshold, that fee is $1.75, compared to the Solana network fee of under $0.001 being subsidized. Gas coverage is a UX convenience for users crossing from EVM chains to Solana, not a meaningful cost reduction.

Solana users benchmarking MetaMask against native aggregators should weigh the 0.875% service fee alongside the gas treatment when comparing total swap cost.

MetaMask's Solana Roadmap: Gas Station Two Months After Native Launch

MetaMask began laying groundwork for Solana integration in 2023 through Snaps-based plugins before shipping native account support in May 2026. Gas Station extending to Solana within two months of that native launch indicates the team is treating Solana as a priority chain rather than a secondary integration. Whether that translates to meaningful user flow from EVM to Solana DeFi will depend on routing quality and liquidity depth within MetaMask's Solana swap infrastructure.
