UX Inflection Point with Meso Network: Revolutionizing Crypto Payments and User Experience ... In a recent episode of The Cove Podcast, Ben from Meso Network shared invaluable insights into the future of crypto UX, the challenges of onboarding new users, and the innovative solutions that are set to reshape the industry.

About

MESO Network

Meso Network was a payment infrastructure startup that specialized in connecting traditional banking rails with cryptocurrency applications. Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Berkeley, California, the company built developer-facing tools that allowed crypto apps and wallets to embed native fiat on-ramp and off-ramp capabilities without routing users away from the host application. In September 2025, Meso was acquired by MoonPay, and its technology and team were folded into MoonPay's global payments platform.

The Problem Meso Solved

The friction between traditional bank accounts and on-chain wallets has long been one of the most significant adoption barriers in crypto. Users who want to move money from their bank to a decentralized application typically face a multi-step process: opening a separate exchange account, completing KYC at that exchange, initiating a transfer, waiting for settlement, and then withdrawing to a self-custodial wallet. Meso's thesis was that this handoff should be invisible — that a crypto app should be able to offer the full bank-to-wallet journey natively, the way a fintech app might connect a bank account in a few taps.

How It Worked

Meso provided developers with an SDK and API layer that rendered a white-label fiat-to-crypto transfer interface directly inside partner applications using an iframe component. The experience was designed to be minimal: first-time users completed a streamlined KYC process by entering the last four digits of their Social Security Number, their name, address, and date of birth, signing a message with their crypto wallet, and confirming a one-time code. Once verified, funds moved instantly from the user's bank account to their wallet. No separate exchange account was required, and users retained self-custody of their assets throughout.

The platform supported multiple integration surfaces. Meso published a JavaScript SDK (meso-js) for browser-based applications, reference implementations for iOS (Swift), and example integrations for React Native and Next.js. All GitHub repositories were publicly available, and the developer documentation offered both a sandbox environment — where no real assets moved and developers could test integrations safely — and a production environment connected to live banking and blockchain networks.

API access used HTTP Basic Authentication with partner-specific keys issued separately for sandbox and production. All API responses returned JSON payloads, and the architecture was designed to be embedded cleanly inside existing web and mobile products.

Key Features

  • Self-custodial design: Users never transferred custody of their assets to Meso or its partners; transfers went directly from bank to user wallet.
  • Embedded experience: The on-ramp rendered inside the host application via iframe, preserving the app's user flow rather than redirecting to an external site.
  • Streamlined KYC: A simplified identity verification process reduced sign-up friction compared with traditional exchange onboarding.
  • Sandbox environment: Full test infrastructure allowed developers to validate integrations before going live.
  • Multi-platform SDKs: Official support for browser (TypeScript/JavaScript), iOS (Swift), and React Native environments.
  • Real-time settlement: Bank-to-wallet transfers were designed for speed, aiming to move funds without the multi-day settlement windows typical of ACH rails.

Team and Background

Meso was co-founded by Ali Aghareza and Ben Mills, two executives with deep roots in payments infrastructure. Aghareza was part of the original engineering team at Braintree, the payments company acquired by PayPal, where he rose to lead engineering for high-volume payment systems. Mills headed developer experience at Braintree and product at Venmo before moving to Solana, where he worked on payments innovation before co-founding Meso. The combination of traditional fintech experience and crypto-native context shaped Meso's developer-first, compliance-conscious approach.

At the time of the MoonPay acquisition, Meso had approximately 16 employees. Following the deal, Aghareza became Chief Technology Officer at MoonPay and Mills took on the role of Senior Vice President of Product, leading MoonPay's global product organization.

Funding and Investors

Meso raised $9.5 million in seed funding in February 2024. The round was led by Ribbit Capital and Solana Ventures, with participation from Canonical and additional backers. The involvement of Solana Ventures reflected both the strategic alignment between Meso's on-ramp infrastructure and Solana's goal of making on-chain activity accessible to mainstream users, and the broader significance of fiat rails to the health of the Solana ecosystem.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

The Solana connection ran throughout Meso's brief independent life. Ben Mills had worked directly on payments at Solana before co-founding the company, giving the team firsthand insight into where developer tools fell short when building on Solana. Solana Ventures' participation in the seed round formalized the relationship. After Meso was absorbed into MoonPay, the combined entity continued to see outsized Solana volume: MoonPay Commerce, launched in October 2025, reported that 88 percent of its transaction volume in the months following launch came from Solana.

Acquisition and Current Status

MoonPay announced the acquisition of Meso Network on September 15, 2025. The deal was positioned as part of MoonPay's strategy to build a comprehensive regulated global payments network combining bank rails, card networks, stablecoins, and blockchains under a unified compliance framework. It followed MoonPay's earlier acquisitions of Helio and Iron, all aimed at assembling a vertically integrated payments stack.

Following the acquisition, Meso's standalone developer documentation domain was taken offline, all GitHub repositories were archived, and the independent Meso brand was wound down. The meso.network domain continues to resolve but displays only a minimal placeholder. The technology and team became part of MoonPay's infrastructure, rather than continuing as an independent product.

Meso did not issue a native token. Its business model was based on transaction fees on fiat-to-crypto transfers.
