About

TipLink

What Is TipLink?

TipLink is a Solana-based wallet and asset distribution platform founded in 2022 by Ian Krotinsky and Aashiq Dheeraj. Its core premise is simple: a link can function as a wallet. Anyone can generate a TipLink URL loaded with SOL, SPL tokens, NFTs, or semi-fungible tokens (SFTs) and share it via text, email, Discord, or any other channel. The recipient can claim the assets without owning an existing crypto wallet, understanding seed phrases, or installing browser extensions.

The founding story reflects that mission directly. Krotinsky and Dheeraj originally wanted to pay a product tester who lacked access to PayPal, Venmo, or a bank account. The inability to send a simple payment to someone outside the traditional financial system became the spark for TipLink: "sending money should be as easy as sending a link."

The Problem TipLink Solves

Crypto onboarding has historically been a friction-heavy process. New users must create wallets, back up seed phrases, fund accounts through exchanges, and understand enough about blockchain mechanics to avoid costly mistakes. This barrier prevents mainstream and underbanked populations from accessing the benefits of decentralized finance — even when the assets waiting for them are small peer-to-peer payments, brand rewards, or event giveaways.

TipLink removes that barrier by inverting the onboarding sequence. A recipient does not need to set up a wallet before receiving crypto. The TipLink URL itself serves as the wallet, and the recipient only needs to decide what to do with the funds after the fact — whether that means withdrawing to a bank account, holding in a lightweight Google-authenticated wallet, or transacting on Solana.

How It Works

TipLink's core mechanism is elegant in its non-custodial design: the private key is embedded directly within the URL itself. TipLink the company never has access to the key — only the holder of the link does. This makes TipLinks behave more like bearer instruments than traditional accounts. Losing the link means losing access to the assets; sharing the link means sharing access.

Generating a TipLink takes three steps. A sender connects their existing Solana wallet, deposits the desired assets to create the link, and then shares the resulting URL or QR code. The recipient follows the link and can access the assets immediately — no registration, no KYC at the point of receipt, no crypto knowledge required.

Transactions settle on Solana, meaning they complete in seconds at a cost of less than one-tenth of a penny. TipLink integrates Solana Pay for payment flows, and partners with Stripe, Moonpay, and Coinflow to support KYC and AML checks when recipients want to move funds into the traditional banking system.

Key Products

TipLink Wallet is a lightweight, non-custodial wallet that replaces the conventional seed phrase setup with Google Account authentication. Users sign in with Gmail and can connect to Solana decentralized applications without installing browser extensions or managing private keys manually. The wallet is accessible on both mobile and desktop.

TipLink Pro is the enterprise and event distribution layer. It gives organizations a suite of tools to create, manage, and track large-scale token and NFT distributions. Use cases include in-person event giveaways powered by rotating QR codes, bulk email airdrop campaigns, and custom branded TipLinks for marketing purposes. Each scan of a dynamic QR code at an event creates a unique wallet and deposits the designated token for the attendee — a mechanism built on Solana's state compression technology.

TipLink Wallet Adapter is a developer integration released in 2024 that allows any Solana application to offer Google login as a wallet connection option. Rather than limiting wallet-adapter-compatible logins to browser extension holders, sites integrating the TipLink Wallet Adapter can onboard users who have only a Google account. The adapter has been integrated by leading Solana applications including Jupiter, Tensor, Drift, Sphere, and Helio.

TipLink API (@tiplink/api on NPM) enables developers to programmatically generate wallets and TipLinks at scale, supporting use cases such as automated reward distribution, gaming economies, and developer tooling.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

TipLink is exclusively built on Solana, and by design it could not exist on a chain with higher transaction costs or slower settlement times. Solana's sub-penny fees and near-instant finality are what make small peer-to-peer payments economically viable and NFT distributions practical at the scale of a music festival or wedding. State compression — Solana's mechanism for dramatically reducing the on-chain storage cost of NFT minting — underpins TipLink Pro's ability to distribute thousands of collectibles per event.

The project sits at an important onboarding frontier for the broader Solana ecosystem. Most Solana applications today assume users already hold SOL and understand how wallets work. TipLink enables a different entry path, where recipients encounter Solana assets before they encounter Solana infrastructure, and the platform handles the complexity in between.

Team and Funding

TipLink was co-founded by Ian Krotinsky and Aashiq Dheeraj, who built the product with consumer accessibility as the primary design constraint. In February 2023 TipLink announced a $6 million funding round co-led by Sequoia Capital and Multicoin Capital. Additional backers included Circle Ventures, Solana Ventures, and Paxos, along with prominent angel investors including Balaji Srinivasan, Sarah Guo, Vinny Lingham, and Liu Jiang.

Security and Custody Model

TipLink's non-custodial architecture means the platform itself never holds user funds or controls private keys. The key material encoded in each link URL remains exclusively with whoever possesses the link. This design limits TipLink's attack surface as a custodian, though it places full responsibility for link security on the sender and recipient. Users connecting via the TipLink Wallet with Google authentication maintain control through that authentication chain rather than through an on-chain keypair they manage directly.

Summary

TipLink addresses one of the most persistent problems in crypto: getting digital assets to people who are not already crypto users. By encoding wallet functionality directly into a shareable URL and layering Google authentication on top, the platform lowers onboarding friction to near zero. Its product suite spans consumer wallets, enterprise distribution tools, and developer infrastructure, all built on Solana's low-cost, high-speed settlement layer.
