Origins and Rebrand

Gate traces its origins to 2013, when founder Dr. Han Lin launched the platform originally as Bter.com. Blockchain Infrastructure: GateChain and Gate Layer

Gate operates its own blockchain stack alongside the exchange. GateChain is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain launched in 2018. Its technical profile includes a four-second block time, approximately 2,745 transactions per second, and transaction costs averaging below 0.002 USD. A distinguishing feature of GateChain is its on-chain safety account design, which incorporates a time-delay key recovery mechanism intended to allow users to recover funds if private keys are compromised. In September 2025, Gate launched Gate Layer, a Layer 2 network built on the OP Stack and settled on GateChain. Gate Layer targets throughput of over 5,700 TPS with one-second block times at approximately 30 USD per million transactions. GT is the exclusive gas token on Gate Layer. The L2 launched alongside Gate Fun, a companion meme token launchpad, extending the ecosystem's footprint into the onchain application layer.

GT Token Economics

GateToken (GT) serves as the backbone of both the exchange's incentive model and the GateChain/Gate Layer ecosystem. On the exchange, GT holders receive trading fee discounts and access to higher VIP tiers. On-chain, GT is used for gas on Gate Layer and can be staked for validator rewards on GateChain. A quarterly buyback-and-burn funded by exchange profits has eliminated over 187 million GT — roughly 62% of the original supply. Gate Layer further implements an EIP-1559-style automatic base-fee burn, creating continuous deflationary pressure.

Solana Integration

Gate offers direct Solana support across several product lines. SOL is available for spot and derivatives trading. The platform also offers GTSOL, a liquid staking certificate for Solana: users deposit SOL and receive GTSOL, a yield-bearing wrapped token that accrues staking rewards and can be redeemed for SOL at any time or used as collateral within the Gate ecosystem. Advertised APR on SOL staking has been listed at up to 7.92%. Gate's non-custodial wallet supports Solana DApps, and its NFT marketplace accommodates Solana-native collections alongside Ethereum and BNB Chain assets.

Proof of Reserves and Security Posture

Gate has positioned transparency as a competitive differentiator and claims to have been among the first exchanges to adopt cryptographic proof-of-reserves. Verification uses zero-knowledge proofs and Merkle tree attestations. As of August 2026, Gate reported total reserves of 8.215 billion USD against user assets — an overall reserve ratio of 127%. Individual asset ratios include 122.79% for BTC, 122.05% for ETH, and 111.63% aggregate for major stablecoins. Approximately 95% of user funds are held in cold storage.

Gate's security history includes a significant breach in 2015, when the platform was operating as Bter.com and approximately 7,000 BTC were stolen from cold wallets. A disputed and unconfirmed 2018 incident has been linked by on-chain analysts to wallet clusters associated with Gate, though the company has never publicly acknowledged it. In 2019, after an Ethereum Classic 51% attack affected user balances, Gate voluntarily reimbursed all affected users. The platform maintains a SAFU-style user protection fund.

Regulatory Footprint

Gate holds regulatory registrations or licenses across several jurisdictions. Gate Europe completed dual licensing under MiCA (EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) and a Payment Institution license in 2025. Additional registrations or operating approvals exist in the UAE (DFSA), Malta (MFSA), Australia (AUSTRAC), Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Lithuania, Italy, and The Bahamas. Gate US launched in August 2025 under the clearer US regulatory framework that followed the crypto-friendly policy shift of that period.
