GainForest

GainForest is a Swiss non-profit building open-source infrastructure that routes climate finance directly to the Indigenous farmers, forest communities, and local ecologists who physically protect and restore threatened ecosystems. Founded in 2017 after winning the United Nations COP23 Hack4Climate contest, the organization is built on a central premise: most climate funding never reaches the communities doing the actual conservation work. GainForest addresses this by deploying Solana smart contracts that automate payments the moment AI-verified milestones are confirmed on-chain.

Core Problem and Mission

Traditional environmental finance flows through long chains of NGOs, auditors, and intermediaries. The World Bank has documented losses of an estimated 24 billion to 41 billion dollars allocated for climate action due to inadequate record-keeping. GainForest's mission is to co-design and deploy technological solutions with grassroots nature stewards to halt global deforestation by 2030, closing the accountability gap with verifiable, on-chain proof of impact.

How the Verification and Payment System Works

Community members — farmers, forest monitors, Indigenous scientists — document their conservation activity through GainForest's Android field app. Every photo, species identification, and GPS coordinate uploaded becomes a permanent, signed record. That evidence is then validated by a combination of AI models trained on satellite deforestation data (sourced from platforms like GLAD: Global Land Analysis and Discovery), cross-referenced with drone imagery and wildlife camera footage, and verified by neighboring community members to reduce fraud.

When conservation milestones are confirmed — trees planted and surviving, forest boundaries maintained, biodiversity checkpoints met — Solana smart contracts automatically release payment to each participant's blockchain wallet. The design eliminates the intermediary layer entirely. As the Solana case study describes it: each individual action by a community member — planting, measuring, checking in on trees — has a price attached to it. A Philippines pilot successfully mapped 3,000 individual mangrove trees, each linked to GPS coordinates, species identification, and photographs.

GainForest chose Solana specifically for its energy efficiency. The network has tracked its carbon footprint since 2021 and operates as a carbon-neutral blockchain, a meaningful factor for a conservation-focused organization that needs to defend the sustainability of its own infrastructure.

NFTrees: Dynamic On-Chain Impact Certificates

Donors who fund conservation pools receive Solana-based NFTs called NFTrees. These are not static collectibles — they function as dynamic impact certificates that update in near-real time as the same verified field data that triggers community payments also refreshes the NFT's metadata. A donor can observe their supported patch of forest over time, seeing imagery from wildlife cameras, biomass estimates from satellite analysis, and ground-level photos from community monitors.

NFTrees also carry additional digital incentives: holders can receive wildlife footage of animals thriving in protected areas. The model deliberately links donor experience to ground truth, aiming to build long-term confidence in conservation funding rather than one-time donations.

Bumicerts and ATProto Data Sovereignty

GainForest's newer infrastructure layer, called Bumicerts, moves field evidence onto ATProto — the open decentralized protocol that also powers Bluesky. Community field notes, photos, audio recordings, and datasets are signed and hosted on community-controlled Personal Data Servers, making the records portable across platforms without vendor lock-in. Partner platforms including Ma Earth, Hypercerts, and Silvi can read these records directly for funding applications and retrospective grants.

The distinction from a typical blockchain approach is deliberate: data sovereignty for communities, not tokenized extraction. GainForest frames its data philosophy as biodiversity information being soil to be cultivated, governed by the GainForest Indigenous and Local Data Council with explicit protocols for consent, attribution, and community-controlled correction paths.

AI Tooling

The organization develops AI capabilities under an "open tools for regenerative intelligence" umbrella. Tainá is an AI storytelling companion, co-designed in partnership with communities in the Greater Manaus region of Brazil, that helps Indigenous communities archive knowledge and share oral histories in their own languages. Passive bioacoustic listening stations deployed in the field detect and classify forest species by sound. Remote sensing pipelines run satellite and drone analysis to track canopy gain, carbon stock, and deforestation risk over time.

GainForest has also published AI and nature models on Hugging Face, including species detection and biodiversity analysis systems powered by the Bacalhau compute network.

Conservation Data Income and Community Compensation

GainForest operates a Conservation Data Income model that compensates community members for data collection activities. Field workers receive direct payment for documenting trees and biodiversity — the program has paid for individual tree measurements and drone mapping missions, with the organization aiming to scale compensation rates as funding grows. This creates a financially viable alternative to logging and land clearance for communities in the Global South who might otherwise lack sustainable income sources.

The platform hosts a global directory of over 1,000 nature projects across four continents, connecting more than 1,200 organizations and tracking nearly 50,000 species sightings from field contributors.

Team and Governance

GainForest was founded by David Dao, an AI researcher with a PhD in AI and Data Systems for Sustainable Development at ETH Zurich, with academic affiliations at Stanford, Berkeley, and MIT. The Nature Guild — a rotating advisory council of Indigenous scientists, ecologists, and field leads from Uganda, India, Brazil, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Kenya — steers the organization's research priorities. GainForest is registered as GainForest e.V., a Swiss tax-exempt non-profit (UID: CHE-181.901.605), with audited financials published annually.

Recognition and Funding

GainForest won the XPRIZE Rainforest competition in 2024, competing as part of the ETH BiodivX team in the Brazilian Amazon finals. The organization donated its entire prize to fund the next generation of Indigenous scientists. Other recognitions include the Earthshot Prize and acknowledgment from the World Economic Forum.

Funding comes from more than 20 institutional supporters including the Ethereum Foundation, Filecoin Foundation, and Klarna. In 2025, GainForest was selected for Klarna's AI for Climate Resilience Program, signaling continued institutional interest in its AI-driven conservation infrastructure.

Audit Status and Token Model

GainForest does not operate a native tradeable token. NFTrees are Solana NFTs representing real-world conservation stakes rather than speculative instruments. No third-party smart contract audits have been publicly disclosed. The organization's financials are audited annually as part of its Swiss non-profit obligations, and its annual impact report is publicly available.

Solana Fit

GainForest occupies the regenerative finance (ReFi) corner of the Solana ecosystem, one of the few projects on the network with a multi-year track record of deploying actual on-chain payments to real-world conservation workers at the community level. Its combination of AI verification, ATProto data infrastructure, and Solana payment rails represents a vertically integrated approach to the longstanding accountability problem in environmental finance.
