Wormhole

Wormhole is a decentralized interoperability protocol designed to function as connective infrastructure for the multi-chain economy. Founded in 2021, the project was originally incubated by Jump Crypto, the blockchain arm of Chicago-based trading firm Jump Trading Group. After separating from Jump Crypto in November 2023 following a USD 225 million Series A round at a USD 2.5 billion valuation backed by Brevan Howard and Jump Trading, Wormhole has operated as an independent protocol. Co-founders Saeed Badreg, Anthony Ramirez, and Tony Jin lead the project through Wormhole Labs.

Wormhole provides a generalized messaging layer that allows applications, tokens, and data to move between blockchains as if they existed on a single network. The protocol supports 45+ blockchains including Solana, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Sui, Aptos, and Hyperliquid. As of mid-2026, Wormhole reports over 68 billion USD in all-time transfer volume and more than one billion cross-chain messages processed.

At the heart of Wormhole is the Guardian network, a set of 19 validator nodes that observe activity on supported chains and produce Verified Action Approvals (VAAs). A VAA is a cryptographically signed packet proving a specified action occurred on the source chain. For a VAA to be valid, 13 of the 19 Guardians must co-sign it, a Byzantine fault-tolerant threshold tolerating up to 6 malicious or offline validators. Off-chain relayers deliver VAAs to destination chains, where Core Contracts verify signatures before execution. Delegated chains use a subset observation model while maintaining the same 13-of-19 final signing threshold. Google Cloud is among the institutional operators running Guardian nodes.

Wormhole has expanded from a basic token bridge into a multi-product interoperability stack. Native Token Transfers (NTT) allows token issuers to maintain a single canonical supply across chains without creating wrapped representations that fragment liquidity. By mid-2026, NTT-bridged supply exceeded 5 billion USD. Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin went multichain via NTT, and BlackRock's BUIDL tokenized money market fund expanded to BNB Chain through Wormhole interoperability. Connect is an embeddable UI widget for bridging. Settlement offers intent-based routing for fast cross-chain transfers. Queries provides on-demand cross-chain state access. MultiGov extends DAO governance across multiple chains simultaneously. Portal's legacy interface was sunset in June 2026, reflecting a shift toward NTT and third-party integrations.

In April 2024, Wormhole launched governance token W, distributing 617 million tokens representing 6 percent of the 10 billion total supply to over 400,000 eligible wallets at an approximate 3 billion USD valuation. W enables governance participation and multichain protocol access. In August 2025, Wormhole integrated an optional zero-knowledge proof security layer for cross-chain token transfers, offering a trust-minimized verification path alongside the Guardian model.

In February 2022, Wormhole suffered a USD 320 million exploit caused by a Guardian account validation vulnerability. Jump Crypto replenished the stolen funds immediately from its own balance sheet. More than a year later, Jump Crypto and Oasis executed a counter-exploit recovering approximately USD 325 million in ETH from the attacker.

Wormhole has two programs on Solana Mainnet: a Bridge contract and the Messaging Protocol. Monad launched its native bridge powered by Wormhole in November 2025. Wormhole is deprecating older integrations including Scroll, removed in April 2026, while migrating to Executor Relay infrastructure. With institutional partners including BlackRock, Ripple, and Apollo, the protocol is positioned as infrastructure for tokenized real-world assets across chains.
