MetaDAO
MetaDAO is a platform on Solana for raising money and running a project. Founders sell a token to the public in an ICO. The money goes into a treasury that the team cannot spend freely. Big decisions are settled by futarchy: people do not vote, they trade in markets that show whether a plan would lift or sink the token's price.
MetaDAO went live in November 2023. It now runs three things: a curated ICO launchpad, an open raise site called Backable, and decision markets that other Solana projects use. Its own token is META. A BNB Chain token called Metaverse-Dao shares the name. It has no link to this project.
How MetaDAO futarchy works: decision markets instead of token votes
Futarchy swaps a vote for two markets. When a proposal goes live, you can trade the project's token in a "pass" market and a "fail" market. If the token trades higher in the pass market, the proposal goes through. If not, it is rejected. The idea comes from economist Robin Hanson. MetaDAO's docs count 96 proposals decided this way since November 2023.
The trades are conditional. Per the trading docs, a conditional trade is like a normal trade, except it reverts if its condition is not met. Say you buy in the pass market and the proposal fails. You get your money back, as if the trade never happened.
Here is the sequence for a project launched on MetaDAO:
- Anyone can write a proposal. It goes live once enough tokens are staked on it. The default is between 200,000 and 1.5 million tokens. Staking only stops spam, so there is no lockup and no penalty.
- The project moves half of its trading pool into the pass and fail markets. Only one proposal can be live at a time.
- Traders have three days to trade.
- The result is read from an average price over time. That average can only move a set amount per update, so a last-minute price spike does little.
A proposal from outside the team must trade at least 3% higher in the pass market to go through. A team proposal passes unless the pass market trades more than 3% below the fail market. MetaDAO says it is still tuning these settings, and each project can set its own.
MetaDAO ICO launchpad: how a raise works
A MetaDAO ICO is a four-day public sale in USDC where every buyer pays the same price. The more demand there is, the smaller the share of your money that gets used, and the rest is refunded. If the sale misses its minimum, everyone gets all of their USDC back.
The ICO rules give every launch the same shape. Ten million tokens go to the buyers. Your share depends on how much you commit and how early. The founder sets a cap on how much USDC the project accepts, so a hot sale does not force a team to take more money than it planned for.
After a successful sale:
- All accepted USDC goes into a treasury run by decision markets, along with the right to mint new tokens.
- 20% of the USDC and 2.9 million tokens go into trading pools so the token can be traded straight away.
- The team draws a fixed monthly budget, which cannot exceed one sixth of the minimum raise. Anything larger needs a proposal.
- Founders can opt into a performance package of up to 12.9 million tokens. It unlocks in five equal parts as the price climbs from 2x to 32x the ICO price, and no sooner than 18 months after the sale.
Demand has often dwarfed the caps. Rip Cars set a $250,000 cap in July 2026 and drew $31.9 million in commitments. Buyers kept under 1% of what they put in. Credible Finance and Umbra saw the same pattern on larger caps.
Launches are curated. Founders apply through a form and the team reviews them. Teams that raised private money first can use the STAMP, a contract written by Colosseum. It caps private investors at 20% of supply and unlocks their tokens over 24 months.
What are ownership coins?
Ownership coin is MetaDAO's name for a token launched this way. The docs list three things the team does not control: the treasury, the brand and code, and the right to mint tokens. Decision markets control all three.
For you as a holder, this is a way to get money back. If a team stops doing the work, anyone can propose that the treasury be paid out to holders. The market then decides. This has happened. In June 2026 a proposal passed to pay Zinc's ZKFG holders $0.15 a token in USDC and wind the project down.
MetaDAO also sets up a legal entity for each project at launch. The aim is to give holders a legal route if a team keeps revenue for itself. But an ownership coin is not a share. The docs say there is no explicit legal ownership document, and that the markets are what protect you.
Backable, formerly Futardio: the permissionless raise platform
Backable is MetaDAO's open raise site. Anyone can start a raise there, and nobody checks the team. It launched in March 2026 as Futardio and was renamed Backable on 5 October 2026. Your money sits in escrow, you can claim it back if the raise misses its goal, and a funded team gets it only as a capped monthly budget.
With no filter, most raises fail. On the day of the rename, Backable's own page showed that only 12 of its 95 raises had been funded. Crypto Briefing put their combined total at roughly $728,000. If you back a raise on Backable, checking the team is your job.
MetaDAO proposals for other DAOs: Sanctum and Jito
Projects that did not launch on MetaDAO can still use its decision markets. MetaDAO's docs name three. Jito JTO$0.481+7.8% used a market to decide on a fee switch. Flash used one for paying revenue to stakers. Sanctum CLOUD$0.057-6.8% runs all of its governance this way.
Here is a recent case. In September 2026, Sanctum asked the market whether to burn 259 million CLOUD tokens, about a quarter of its supply. Trading ran for 72 hours, and the proposal passed on 19 September 2026.
Who MetaDAO is for
MetaDAO suits early crypto teams that have a working product and real users but have not yet raised a large round. It also suits buyers who want checks on how a team spends the money. That is the fit MetaDAO describes in its guide for founders.
For founders, the cost is control. You get a monthly allowance, you publish monthly reports, and holders can propose taking the treasury back. The docs call clear public communication "100% critical". MetaDAO says it is a poor fit if you want a standard venture round with no token, or if you cannot accept a liquid token that can fall in public.
For buyers, a popular sale may use only a sliver of your money, so you need USDC you can leave idle for four days. And using the governance well means trading conditional markets, which takes more skill than clicking a vote button.
Is MetaDAO safe? Audits, upgrade control and risks
MetaDAO's code has been audited many times, but its own team still calls the system a beta. The audits folder in its public code holds ten reports from five firms: Neodyme, Accretion, Offside Labs, Ackee Blockchain and OtterSec. The reports run from 2024 to 2026. Going by their titles, they cover the futarchy program, its trading pools, the launchpad, the token lock and the treasury setup.
These are the main risks to weigh:
- The code can be changed after launch. MetaDAO's build guide describes upgrades going through a Squads multisig, with a MetaDAO security council checking each one. We could not read the upgrade keys on chain for this review, so check them in an explorer before you rely on that.
- The team can overrule the markets. The ownership coin docs say MetaDAO can step in during extreme cases while in beta, and expects to give up that power over time.
- Markets can be attacked. In a case reported on 4 August 2026, someone staked enough to put forward a proposal that would have drained about $1.5 million from Umbra's treasury. The market rejected it. Crypto Briefing noted the margin of safety was not enormous. A market with few traders is easier to push around.
- The code is public but not fully open. It uses a Business Source License, which limits how others can reuse it.
MetaDAO alternatives: bonding-curve launchpads and venture funding
MetaDAO sits between two more common ways to fund a crypto project. A bonding-curve launchpad has no application step. But MetaDAO's founder docs say the median token there earns its creator only $10,000 to $100,000 in fees, and buyers get no say over the money. A venture round means no public token price to worry about, but your users cannot take part.
MetaDAO's curated launchpad is slower and stricter than either. You apply, you accept a spending cap, and you answer to a market. Backable drops the application step and keeps the escrow and budget rules. If you are a buyer choosing between the two, the curated launchpad has a team reviewing who gets listed, and Backable does not.
META token: supply, migration and where it trades
META is MetaDAO's own token. MetaDAO runs itself with the same decision markets it offers to others. The mint address is METAwkXcqyXKy1AtsSgJ8JiUHwGCafnZL38n3vYmeta (META). It replaced the older METAC token. The swap was free and one-way, and each old token became 1,000 new ones.
There is no fixed supply cap. The token docs say new META can only be minted when a proposal passes its decision market. There is no automatic inflation and no scheduled unlock. The supply stood at about 22.7 million in July 2026, per MetaDAO's MiCA white paper.
MetaDAO earns a 0.25% fee on trades in its futarchy pools. Its analytics page counts that as protocol revenue. META was listed on Coinbase in May 2026. The MiCA white paper is an EU disclosure filing. It names Ireland as the home state and says no authority has approved it.
MetaDAO founders, investors and history
MetaDAO was founded by Proph3t, who uses a pseudonym, and Kollan House, also known as Nallok. The legal issuer of META is MetaDAO LLC. It was set up in the Marshall Islands in February 2024, per the MiCA white paper.
Paradigm led a $2.2 million round in August 2024. It bought META tokens directly, alongside about 30 angel investors, according to a report on the round. In February 2025, MetaDAO hired Robin Hanson as a paid adviser. The hire was itself approved through a decision market, CoinDesk reported.
The launchpad has hosted ICOs since April 2025. By January 2026 it had run eight sales that raised $25.6 million, according to Alea Research. Futardio followed in March 2026 and became Backable that October.
