Ethena Protocol
Ethena Protocol is a synthetic dollar system built on Ethereum that issues USDe through delta-hedging strategies using crypto assets and derivatives positions. The protocol maintains price stability by combining spot asset collateral with corresponding short futures positions while distributing yield to stakers through protocol revenue.

Ethena
Ethena is a crypto-native protocol that issues USDe, a synthetic dollar maintained at a one-dollar peg without holding fiat in a bank. To mint one USDe, a user deposits crypto collateral, primarily liquid-staked ETH or BTC, and Ethena simultaneously shorts an equivalent notional value in perpetual futures markets. This delta-neutral hedge cancels price exposure while generating yield from two sources: staking rewards on the spot leg and funding payments collected from long perp traders. That yield is distributed to holders of sUSDe, the staked form of USDe, which accrues returns via an exchange-rate model rather than rebasing. Across 2024 and into 2025, sUSDe realized APYs ranged from roughly 4 to 30 percent, with most periods between 8 and 18 percent. Funding can turn negative; Ethena maintains a Reserve Fund to buffer sUSDe holders during those windows, with the longest negative stretch in three years running 13 days. Collateral is held off-chain with institutional custodians, reducing smart-contract risk at the cost of custodial and counterparty exposure. Exchange limits are set through governance. USDtb, a second dollar product, is fully collateralized by tokenized US Treasuries, primarily BlackRock's BUIDL fund, held by BNY Mellon and Coinbase. It attracted over 3.1 billion USD in inflows within 20 days of launch. A portion of USDe's reserves now sits in USDtb as a stable buffer outside the delta-neutral structure. ENA is Ethena's governance token with a fixed total supply of 15 billion. Allocation: 30 percent to core contributors with a one-year cliff and three-year vesting, 20 percent to investors, 20 percent to the Ethena Foundation, and 30 percent for ecosystem development and airdrops. ENA holders vote on risk parameters including backing asset composition, exchange exposure caps, cross-chain integrations, and Reserve Fund sizing. A fee switch activated in 2025 to 2026 redirects a portion of protocol revenue to ENA stakers. In December 2024, Ethena raised 100 million USD in a private token sale at 0.40 USD per ENA, with Franklin Templeton and F-Prime Capital among investors. Total funding across five rounds is approximately 156 million USD, starting with a 6 million USD seed in July 2023. Ethena was founded by Guy Young, CEO of Ethena Labs, who spent nearly six years at Cerberus Capital Management before entering crypto. Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, serves as founding advisor. The protocol has completed four external audits with no critical findings: Quantstamp in October 2023, Pashov in October 2023, Code4rena in November 2023, and Pashov on V2 in May 2024. Security features include a whitelist for minting and redemptions, multi-signature authorization for whitelisted address changes, and institutional-grade asset segregation. USDe reached Solana in 2024 via LayerZero's Omnichain Fungible Token standard, enabling cross-chain movement without a separate wrapped token. At launch, Ethena integrated with Kamino Finance, Orca, and Drift Protocol on Solana, with Jito added shortly after. The opportunity was clear: at the time, over 90 percent of Solana's roughly 3.5 billion USD stablecoin supply offered no yield to holders. The protocol has proposed SOL and jitoSOL as USDe collateral through governance. Bitwise partnered with Ethena to build an institutional lending market on Jupiter Lend using USDe. ENA launched on Solana in May 2026 via Sunrise DeFi. At peak in 2025, USDe circulating supply exceeded 12 billion USD, making it the third-largest stablecoin by supply. As of mid-2026, TVL stood at approximately 4.2 billion USD. Ethena operates across 24 blockchains with roughly 756,000 users and generates an estimated 130 million USD annually in fees. Germany's BaFin ordered a halt to USDe in 2025 for MiCA non-compliance; Ethena pivoted toward US regulatory frameworks. Solana's low-cost environment suits yield-bearing stablecoins: cheap transactions make frequent rebalancing, small-lot staking, and DEX integrations efficient. Ethena's Solana presence is expanding from a cross-chain extension into an independent deployment as SOL collateral and institutional lending markets mature.
