About

Circle

Circle is a financial technology company founded in October 2013 with the mission of making money movement as open and accessible as the internet itself. At its core, Circle is the issuer of USDC — the world's largest regulated dollar-pegged stablecoin — and has built a comprehensive infrastructure stack that allows businesses, developers, and financial institutions to send, receive, and program value on public blockchains.

The USDC Foundation

USDC is Circle's flagship product and the bedrock of its platform. Every USDC token is fully backed by liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets, primarily held in the Circle Reserve Fund (USDXX), an SEC-registered money market fund managed by BlackRock and subject to daily third-party reporting. This reserve architecture allows USDC holders to redeem at a 1:1 ratio with US dollars at any time, distinguishing USDC from algorithmic or partially-backed alternatives.

As of April 2026, USDC's total supply across all chains exceeds $78.1 billion, driven by 108% year-over-year circulation growth. The stablecoin is natively issued on 30+ blockchains, and Circle holds 55 operating licenses across eight major jurisdictions — the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Singapore, UAE, Bermuda, Canada, and Japan. In July 2026, Circle received final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish Circle National Trust, aligning its digital asset infrastructure with traditional trust banking standards.

USDC on Solana

Solana is one of the most important blockchains in Circle's multichain strategy. USDC is natively issued on Solana as an SPL token (mainnet address: EPjFWdd5AufqSSqeM2qN1xzybapC8G4wEGGkZwyTDt1v), meaning it is minted directly by Circle rather than bridged from another chain. This native issuance ensures that Solana-based USDC carries the same 1:1 dollar guarantee and reserve backing as USDC on any other network.

Solana's performance characteristics make it a compelling settlement layer: 400-millisecond finality and transaction fees measured in fractions of a cent. Circle issued $64.5 billion worth of USDC on Solana in 2025 alone. Twelve major platforms in the Solana ecosystem directly support native USDC, including Jupiter, Drift, Orca, Raydium, Kamino, and OKX. Circle's tokenized money market fund USYC also became available on Solana in 2025, extending yield-bearing dollar assets into the ecosystem.

Institutional adoption of USDC on Solana has accelerated. Visa launched stablecoin settlement capabilities using USDC on Solana, with Cross River Bank and Lead Bank among the first U.S. financial institutions to participate. In April 2026, Meta began rolling out stablecoin creator payouts in USDC on Solana and Polygon, powered by Stripe.

Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol

Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) is a permissionless onchain mechanism that moves USDC natively between supported blockchains by burning tokens on the source chain and minting an equivalent amount on the destination chain. Unlike traditional bridges that rely on liquidity pools and wrapped tokens, CCTP guarantees 1:1 capital efficiency at every hop with no slippage or counterparty risk from bridge operators.

CCTP V2, launched in March 2025, introduced Fast Transfers that settle cross-chain in roughly 8 to 20 seconds, along with programmable post-transfer hooks for composable onchain workflows. Solana was added to CCTP V2 in October 2025. By November 2025, the protocol had processed over $110 billion in cumulative volume and more than 5.3 million total cross-chain transfers across both versions. In March 2026 alone, approximately $2.4 billion moved through CCTP.

Developer Platform

Circle operates a full developer platform built around composable primitives for money movement. Key products include Circle Wallets for embedding non-custodial wallets in applications; Circle Contracts for deploying smart contracts from audited templates; Circle Paymaster, which allows users to pay gas fees in USDC without holding native gas tokens; and Circle Gateway, which provides a unified USDC balance across chains and eliminates the need to pre-fund wallets on each network separately.

App Kits offer a unified SDK for send, swap, and bridge flows across all supported chains. Nanopayments extends the platform to gas-free USDC micropayments as small as $0.000001, designed for AI agent and machine-to-machine payment flows. Forty-plus blockchain networks are currently supported. Circle's proprietary Layer-1 blockchain, Arc, is also in development: its testnet launched in October 2025 and processed over 150 million transactions, targeting sub-second settlement with USDC-native fee mechanics.

Regulatory Standing and Institutional Momentum

Circle's compliance posture distinguishes it from most stablecoin issuers. Operating in 185+ countries with 55 licenses and an OCC trust bank charter in hand, USDC meets the requirements that banks, payment processors, and asset managers need before integrating a stablecoin. Standard Chartered launched integrated USDC access for institutional clients in July 2026, allowing them to mint and redeem without separate Circle onboarding. BNY added USDC as the first stablecoin on its Digital Asset Custody platform in June 2026. Also in July 2026, Circle acquired IBM's blockchain patent portfolio, positioning itself as the leading U.S. blockchain patent holder as stablecoin legislation advances in Congress.

Beyond USDC, Circle operates the Circle Payments Network (CPN), a global stablecoin transaction layer connecting banks, fintechs, and payment providers for cross-border settlement. StableFX adds an institutional-grade onchain foreign exchange layer for swapping between USDC, EURC, and other stablecoins. Taken together, Circle's infrastructure stack — from developer APIs to institutional custody integrations — positions USDC as a foundational settlement layer across both decentralized applications and traditional financial systems.
