Solflare Launches Fresh Mints, Letting Users Apply NFT Portfolio Backgrounds Inside Their Wallet
Solflare Fresh Mints lets users mint NFT collections and apply them as portfolio backgrounds inside the wallet. MonkeDAO's SMB collection is the first drop.
Solflare has rolled out Fresh Mints, a new in-wallet feature that lets users mint NFT-based portfolio background skins and apply them across the Solflare mobile app, web wallet, and browser extension. The first drop is a collaboration with MonkeDAO, the Solana-native DAO built around the Solana Monkey Business collection, one of the network's oldest blue-chip NFT projects.
Solflare announced the feature on June 23 with a direct statement on the state of Solana NFTs: "NFTs never left. β As fun. β As utility. β As culture." The framing positions Fresh Mints not as a new product category but as a new use case for existing ownership: NFT holdings become an active part of the wallet interface rather than assets sitting in a gallery tab.
How Solflare Fresh Mints Works
Fresh Mints is a mint platform embedded directly inside the Solflare wallet. When a user mints an NFT through it, that token unlocks as a portfolio background visible across all three Solflare interfaces. The background is tied to ownership. It persists as long as the NFT is held in the connected wallet, and disappears if the token is transferred or sold.
The mechanics shift NFTs from collectibles into functional, ownership-verified wallet customization. A holder's portfolio screen changes based on what they actually own, giving NFTs a presence in the wallet's daily interface rather than only appearing during explicit gallery views or marketplace activity.
Solflare opened 50 whitelist spots for the MonkeDAO drop ahead of the public launch, running the whitelist campaign through its X Feed inside the app. The limited-supply structure and whitelist mechanics follow a gated-access model common to high-demand NFT releases.
MonkeDAO as the Launch Partner
MonkeDAO was founded in August 2021 as the DAO governing the Solana Monkey Business NFT collection. SMB Gen2 comprises 5,000 randomly generated 24Γ24 pixel monkeys and is among the earliest blue-chip NFT collections on Solana, often compared to CryptoPunks for its cultural standing within the ecosystem.
In April 2023, MonkeDAO acquired the Solana Monkey Business IP from the original launch team for $2 million, following a dispute over royalties. The acquisition gave the community direct control over the collection's future direction. The DAO has since expanded its programs to include DAOPool liquid staking, a Banana Shop loyalty platform, and SOLSTICE community events.
Solflare's choice to open Fresh Mints with MonkeDAO is deliberate positioning. SMB's standing in Solana's culture gives the feature immediate credibility within the network's most established NFT community, and the DAO's long history of expanding utility for its holders aligns with Fresh Mints' ownership-as-access model.
NFT Utility Beyond the Trading Context
The broader trajectory here is NFTs finding durable utility in consumer software. Fresh Mints puts ownership directly into the wallet interface where holders spend time daily, a different surface than a marketplace or a gallery. An SMB holder who mints a background sees their NFT each time they check their portfolio, rather than only when actively browsing their collection.
Solflare has been adding product layers to its base steadily. In June, the wallet shipped card borrowing against SOL, no-SOL swaps, and a Titan integration, reaching across its 4 million monthly active users and positioning itself as a full DeFi hub alongside its custody role. Fresh Mints extends that direction into NFT infrastructure: the wallet becomes a place where NFT holdings have active, visual presence rather than passive storage.
The whitelist and limited-supply structure of the MonkeDAO drop suggests Solflare is treating Fresh Mints as a curated launch platform rather than an open mint tool. Whether additional Solana NFT collections join the roster, and on what terms, has not been announced.
