PhoenixTrade Crosses $10M Open Interest for the First Time as Flight Club Drives 16.6x Volume Surge
PhoenixTrade hit $10M open interest for the first time on July 28 as Flight Club drove 24-hour volume to $67.1M, 16.6x above the prior week's average.
Phoenix crossed $10 million in open interest on July 28, 2026, the first time the Solana perpetuals exchange had reached that level. Open interest peaked above $11 million in the 24 hours that followed, a 25% jump above its previous all-time high of $8.8 million set in June, according to DeFiLlama on-chain data.
The timing tracks directly to the launch of Flight Club, a 28-day incentive program distributing $420,000 in USDC directly to traders. Ellipsis Labs announced the program on July 27.
$67.1M in 24-Hour Volume: 16.6x PhoenixTrade's Prior Week Average
The volume move behind the OI milestone was substantial. PhoenixTrade recorded $67.1 million in 24-hour perpetuals volume on July 28, 16.6 times its prior seven-day average, according to Sam Schubert of Blockworks Research.
The open interest reading is the more informative figure. Volume can be generated by traders churning quickly in and out of positions; open interest only rises when positions are held. A simultaneous volume spike and OI record suggests Flight Club's reward structure is pulling traders toward holding exposure rather than flipping it.
How Flight Club Rewards Are Structured
Rewards are paid in USDC each day with no vesting and no points accumulation, a departure from the deferred-value models most incentive programs use. At $420,000 over 28 days, the pool distributes approximately $15,000 per day, split across three factors: share of daily trading volume, average open interest maintained over the period, and referral activity.
The OI component is the structural tell. By making position-holding time part of the payout formula alongside raw volume, the program creates an incentive toward sustained exposure rather than transaction count alone, which is why open interest and volume moved together on July 28.
PhoenixTrade has no native token, which is uncommon among Solana perps exchanges. Competitors such as Jupiter JUP$0.167-0.6% and Drift Protocol DRIFT$0.011-1.0% use token-based emissions to attract and retain liquidity. For a token-less exchange, cash distribution programs are the primary tool for user acquisition, which makes Flight Club a real-world test of whether direct USDC rewards can produce open interest that persists after the program closes.
The on-chain footprint backs the move. Solana Compass analytics tracking the Phoenix Perps program show daily signers averaged roughly 440 in the four days before Flight Club launched (July 23-26), rose to 786 on July 27 when the program was announced, and jumped to 2,058 on July 28, when open interest crossed $10 million.
Signers on the Phoenix Perps on-chain contract nearly quintupled from a pre-launch average of ~440 per day to 2,058 on July 28, the day open interest crossed $10 million.
View on Solana Compass →Context: $1 Billion in Volume Before Incentives Launched
The milestone lands against a specific backdrop. PhoenixTrade crossed $1 billion in cumulative perpetuals volume before Flight Club launched, the first billion dollars traded under purely organic conditions, with no incentive program running.
The exchange runs a fully on-chain order book on Solana, settling all trades and positions on-chain rather than through off-chain matching. Flight Club is the first incentive program in the exchange's history, meaning the June all-time high of $8.8 million in open interest was the exchange's organic ceiling before rewards entered the picture. The 25% jump above that level with rewards running is a real OI gain; how much holds once the 28-day program closes in late August will be the more revealing number.
