MoonPay Launches PayBox, a Non-Custodial Payment Vault That Embeds Solana Wallet Access in ChatGPT and Claude
MoonPay's PayBox gives ChatGPT and Claude users a non-custodial payment vault on Solana and 7 EVM chains, secured by Sodot MPC/TEE cryptography. Live July 29.
MoonPay launched PayBox on July 29, a non-custodial payment vault that connects to ChatGPT or Claude and lets the AI agent execute crypto transactions, pay merchants, and route funds across blockchains without the user's private keys or payment card numbers ever being reconstructed or exposed to any single party. The product is live at paybox.sh and built on multi-party computation cryptography from Sodot, the Israeli key management firm MoonPay acquired for roughly $100 million in April 2026, according to Decrypt.
How PayBox Splits Wallet Keys Across Secure Enclaves
PayBox uses Sodot's MPC infrastructure to fragment each wallet's private key across multiple hardware-isolated trusted execution environments. No single party, MoonPay included, ever holds enough key material to sign a transaction independently. Threshold cryptography requires a quorum of TEE-held fragments to participate in each signing operation, with execution remaining inside hardware-protected enclaves throughout.
Sodot's system currently protects more than $50 billion in digital assets across over 10 million wallets, with institutional clients including eToro and BitGo, according to MoonPay's launch announcement.
Solana Plus Seven EVM Networks at Launch
PayBox launches with Solana as its primary blockchain, alongside Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain. MoonPay has said additional networks are planned.
The company has 30 million customers across 180 countries and more than 1,700 enterprise client integrations, per its press release.
Always Ask and Autonomous Mode: Two Paths for AI-Initiated Spending
PayBox gives users two transaction authorization models. "Always Ask" requires a passkey confirmation before any payment executes, preserving human oversight per transaction. "Autonomous" mode permits the AI agent to transact within spending limits the user sets in advance. All authorizations are single-use and revocable.
At launch, real-world integrations cover restaurant reservations at AgentRes.dev, flight bookings at BRIJ.fi, and retail shopping at Purch.xyz. Users can also swap SOL and other tokens, bridge assets across supported chains, and route funds into DeFi protocols including Aave for yield optimization. MoonPay has said perpetual futures, liquidity management, and support for additional AI platforms are targeted within about one month.
x402 Agent Payments and the Visa Agentic Commerce Protocol
PayBox supports x402 for internet-native agent transactions. Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 was contributed to the Linux Foundation in April 2026 and is now a vendor-neutral open standard backed by more than 20 organizations, including AWS, Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, and Anthropic, per MoonPay's launch announcement. Solana Foundation and Google Cloud's July 2026 Korea AI agentic commerce hackathon built on x402 as the payment protocol for AI agents paying cloud API costs in USDC.
Card payments in PayBox run through Visa's agentic commerce protocol, which processes transactions without storing or exposing the raw card number. Single-use passkeys prevent replay attacks on approved card transactions.
Open Wallet Standard, Sodot Acquisition, and MoonPay's Path to PayBox
PayBox is the consumer product built on the Open Wallet Standard MoonPay released in March 2026, an open-source framework for AI agents to hold value and sign transactions across chains without private key exposure. More than 15 organizations backed that standard at launch, including the Solana Foundation, Ethereum Foundation, and PayPal, per MoonPay's Open Wallet Standard announcement.
Neeraj Prasad, MoonPay Labs Chief Engineer, described PayBox as combining "crypto wallets and payment cards in a non-custodial vault that users connect directly to ChatGPT or Claude," according to The Block. The product does not require an existing MoonPay account and has its own standalone onboarding.
MoonPay's path to PayBox included acquiring Entendre for AI accounting software, shipping MoonPay Agents as a developer CLI in February 2026, and acquiring Dawn Labs, an AI trading firm co-founded by Prasad, per The Block. The Sodot acquisition in April provided the production-grade key management layer the consumer product required.
