About

VALR

VALR is a South African cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2018 and headquartered in Johannesburg. Built around the tagline Pro Trading, For Everyone, it has grown into Africa's largest digital asset exchange by trading volume and one of the more prominent centralized exchanges serving emerging markets globally.

Background and Founding

VALR was co-founded by Farzam Ehsani, Badi Sudhakaran, and Theo Bohnen. Ehsani, who serves as CEO, brings a background in management consulting at McKinsey and Deloitte, corporate banking at Rand Merchant Bank, and earlier roles at the United Nations and the Bahai World Centre. He studied economics at UC Berkeley. The exchange began trading operations in 2019, initially focused on the South African retail market and ZAR-denominated crypto pairs that had historically lacked depth on global platforms.

Funding and Investors

VALR has raised approximately 54.9 million USD across three rounds. A 1.5 million USD seed round in February 2019 was led by Bittrex. A 3.4 million USD Series A followed in July 2020, led by HDR Group and 4Di Capital. In March 2022, VALR closed a 50 million USD Series B led by Pantera Capital, at the time the largest funding round ever secured by an African crypto firm. The Series B also drew in Coinbase Ventures, Fidelity F-Prime Capital, Alameda Research, CMT Digital, GSR, Cadenza, Distributed Global, Third Prime, and Avon Ventures. The round valued VALR at 240 million USD.

Products and Trading

VALR offers spot trading across 100 or more cryptocurrencies, with its deepest markets in ZAR-denominated pairs: BTC/ZAR, ETH/ZAR, XRP/ZAR, and SOL/ZAR. SOL/USDC is also available for traders who prefer stablecoin-settled Solana exposure. The platform supports spot margin trading with up to 5x leverage on major digital asset pairs.

In July 2026, VALR launched perpetual futures markets, integrating Hyperliquid's Layer-1 blockchain as backend infrastructure for its perps product. The launch covered more than 200 markets spanning cryptocurrencies including SOL, BTC, ETH, and major L1/L2 tokens, tokenized equities including NVIDIA, Tesla, SpaceX, Apple, and the S&P 500, commodities including gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas, and forex pairs. VALR describes this as the first instance of a regulated centralized exchange natively integrating an on-chain Layer-1 protocol for cross-asset perpetuals liquidity, a model the company calls CeDeFi.

Beyond trading, VALR operates an institutional OTC desk, a staking and lending product suite, and VALR Pay, which enables free crypto transfers between VALR users and payments at over 31,000 stores and 700,000 or more locations across South Africa through Zapper, Scan-to-Pay, and Peach Payments integrations.

In September 2025, VALR launched xStocks, a tokenized equities product offering exposure to U.S. stocks and indices including Tesla, NVIDIA, and the S&P 500, as well as tokenized gold. The exchange also listed Africa's first tokenized private credit asset in July 2025, partnering with Garrington Capital on a USD Private Credit Token. Retail investment products include VALR10, a basket of the top ten cryptocurrencies, and a Bitcoin-and-gold bundle marketed as BitGold.

Scale

As of mid-2026, VALR had approximately 2 million registered users and over 1,900 corporate and institutional clients. The exchange has processed more than 23 billion USD in cumulative volume and reports more than 15 billion USD in stablecoin volumes annually, placing it among the top ten global USDC minters. More than one in four users is located outside South Africa.

Regulatory Licenses

VALR holds multiple licenses in South Africa from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA): Category I and Category II licenses as a Crypto Asset Service Provider obtained in April 2024, an Over-the-Counter Derivatives Provider license enabling it to offer CFDs, futures, options, and swaps on crypto assets, and a Third Party Payment Provider license. It is also registered with South Africa's National Credit Regulator. In May 2026, VALR secured a provisional Virtual Asset Service Provider license from the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), which is intended to support global institutional expansion.

Geographic Expansion

South Africa remains VALR's primary market, where it claims the deepest ZAR/crypto order books of any exchange. The company frames its mission explicitly around Africa's financial infrastructure gap, citing cross-border remittance costs of up to 20 percent in some corridors, and positions crypto settlement and stablecoin-denominated payments as a practical solution. In April 2026, VALR partnered with Onafriq to connect its platform to mobile money networks across 43 African markets, including M-Pesa and MTN MoMo. An expansion into Kenya was formalized in May 2026, coinciding with Kenya's new VASP regulatory framework coming into force.

Technology and API

VALR provides REST and WebSocket APIs supporting spot, margin, and perpetual futures operations, alongside account management and real-time market data streaming. In April 2026, the exchange launched an AI service layer allowing both human users and autonomous AI agents to access trading tools and market analysis programmatically. The associated open-source agent skills repository (valr-agent-skills on GitHub) follows the open Agent Skills Standard.

Summary

VALR operates as a full-service centralized exchange with a clear regional identity as Africa's largest crypto platform by volume, while pursuing institutional and global expansion through regulatory licensing, institutional connectivity including a March 2026 integration with Zurich-based institutional trading platform Wyden, and a CeDeFi architecture that pairs its compliance infrastructure with Hyperliquid's on-chain liquidity. Solana is supported across spot trading (SOL/ZAR and SOL/USDC), margin, and perpetual futures products.
