RainFi

TL;DR

Rain.fi is a leading decentralized peer-to-peer lending and borrowing platform built on the Solana blockchain. It allows users to borrow against their crypto and NFT holdings and lend assets to earn yield. Rain.fi stands out through its instant loans, ability to use NFTs as collateral, customizable lending pools, buy now pay later options for NFTs, and white-label lending services for other Solana apps.

How Rain.fi Works

At its core, Rain.fi enables two key financial primitives - borrowing and lending.

On the borrowing side, users can deposit their fungible tokens or NFTs as collateral to take out loans in supported cryptocurrencies like USDC, SOL, and more. This provides an easy way to access liquidity without having to sell assets. Borrowers can choose from variable or fixed interest rates and flexible loan durations. Rain.fi is one of the only Solana protocols that allows NFTs to be used as collateral, greatly expanding the utility of these tokens.

For lenders, Rain.fi offers the ability to deposit assets into lending pools to earn yield. Lenders can choose between existing pools or create their own customized pools by setting parameters like acceptable collateral types, loan-to-value ratios, interest rates and more. This allows for a wide variety of risk/return profiles to suit different lenders.

Rain.fi has also introduced an innovative "buy now, pay later" feature specifically for NFTs. This allows users to purchase an NFT by putting down a fraction of the price upfront and pay off the rest over time, similar to BNPL solutions in e-commerce.

Strategies and Opportunities

There are a number of ways for users to take advantage of Rain.fi depending on their goals:

For borrowers looking for quick access to liquidity, Rain.fi's instant loans stand out. With just a few clicks, you can collateralize your crypto or NFT assets and receive a loan. This is useful for short term trading/arbitrage opportunities or simply to free up capital without selling.

NFT holders can leverage Rain.fi to monetize their NFTs in several ways. The simplest is to take out a collateralized loan to access liquidity. But the buy now, pay later feature also allows you to offer your NFT for sale in installments, potentially reaching a wider audience of buyers.

Lenders can take advantage of Rain.fi's flexible lending pool options to deploy their capital at their desired risk tolerance. More conservative lenders may prefer pools with lower LTVs and higher quality collateral for stable yield. Lenders with more risk appetite can provide liquidity to higher LTV pools or ones focused on newly launched NFT projects to chase higher returns.

What Makes Rain.fi Special

Rain.fi has several standout elements that make it unique among Solana lending protocols:

  • NFTs as collateral - Rain.fi is a pioneer in allowing users to take out loans against their NFT holdings. This greatly expands the utility and liquidity of the NFT ecosystem.

  • Instant loans - Rain.fi has streamlined the borrowing process to be as fast and simple as possible. With just a few clicks users can access a crypto loan.

  • Customizable lending pools - Lenders have granular control over the parameters of their pool. This allows for a diverse set of yield opportunities tailored to a lender's specific preferences.

  • Buy now, pay later for NFTs - An innovative feature that makes buying NFTs more accessible by allowing purchasers to spread out payments over time.

  • White-label lending solution - Rain.fi allows other Solana dapps to easily integrate its lending and borrowing functionality via APIs. This "lending as a service" expands Rain.fi's reach while providing an additional revenue stream.

  • Developer focused - Extensive developer tools and documentation make it easy for devs to build on top of Rain.fi and incorporate it into their own dapps.

Key Features

  • Wide range of supported assets - Rain.fi supports a large and growing list of Solana tokens and NFT collections that can be used as collateral or lent out.

  • Flexible borrowing terms - Borrow at variable or fixed rates, with 3 to 90 day loan durations. No liquidations, only risk is collateral if loan not repaid.

  • Lender customized pools - Lenders can set their own rates, LTV, accepted collateral, and other key parameters. Earn fees from loans and liquidations.

  • NFT buy now, pay later - Allow buyers to purchase your NFT via installment payments over time. Helps make NFTs more affordable/accessible.

  • Lending as a service - White-label solution for other Solana dapps to incorporate Rain.fi's lending functionality. Earn revenue via fee sharing.

  • Extensive developer tools - APIs, documentation, and examples to facilitate building on top of Rain.fi. Customize and integrate the lending protocol into dapps.

Team

Rain.fi was founded by a team of experienced DeFi and crypto entrepreneurs:

  • Tomas Nemeiksis - Co-founder & CEO with product management background from Curve Labs
  • Povilas Stoskus - Co-founder & CTO, previously tech lead at DappRadar
  • Edvardas Sadovskis - Co-founder & COO, managed operations at a top EU lending company

The founders are supported by a growing team of engineers, designers and marketers, many with prior experience at major crypto and DeFi projects. Advisors include founders of Solana-based protocols like Orca and Saber.

Roadmap

Rain.fi launched on Solana mainnet in 2023 after extensive testing. The initial release supported fungible token collateralized loans and lending pools. Since then, they have rolled out NFT collateralized loans, buy now pay later, and white-label lending.

Upcoming developments on the roadmap include:

  • Improved liquidation process with partial liquidation
  • Stable interest rate pools
  • Dollar cost averaging deposits into lending pools
  • Expanded NFT lending features
  • Additional developer tools and customization options
  • Decentralized governance

While still a young protocol, the Rain.fi team is shipping new features and improvements at an impressive pace as they aim to become the leading lending solution on Solana.

RAIN Token and Tokenomics

Rain.fi has not yet released an official token, but has outlined plans to launch one in the future to decentralize protocol governance and provide additional utility for users.

In the meantime, Rain.fi has implemented a unique "Droplets" rewards system. Users earn Droplets by performing actions that provide value to the protocol like making swaps or referring other users. Droplets can be redeemed for USDC rewards or potentially used to access premium features. This serves as a bridge until the official token release.

Once live, the RAIN token will be used to vote on protocol changes, set lending pool parameters, and for staking to earn a share of protocol revenue. The team has stated that a majority of tokens will be allocated to the community via liquidity mining and retroactive airdrops.

Security and Audits

As a protocol responsible for stewarding user funds, security is a top priority for Rain.fi. The team has engaged with multiple leading smart contract auditing firms to review and verify the safety of the Rain.fi codebase. Audits from Solidity Finance, Kudelski, and Zellic have been completed with no major issues found.

Rain.fi's contracts use a robust system of access control and timelock upgrades to protect against unauthorized actions. A substantial bug bounty is also offered via Immunefi to encourage responsible disclosure of any vulnerabilities.

As part of Rain.fi's shift towards decentralization, the protocol will be governed by a DAO and upgrades will require approval from RAIN token holders once the token is live. This helps to prevent any centralized points of failure.

The Rain.fi team is committed to upholding the highest security standards as they expand the protocol and work towards complete decentralization over time. With multiple clean audits and robust secure development practices in place, users can feel confident lending and borrowing through Rain.fi.
