DeFi Sentinel

DeFi Sentinel is a compliance oracle that provides real-time KYC, AML, wallet screening, and transaction monitoring for DeFi protocols. The system combines on-chain and off-chain data to ensure regulatory compliance at the transaction level.

About

Netki

Netki is a digital identity verification and blockchain compliance company that has been building compliance infrastructure for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) since 2014. Founded in Calabasas, California, by internet startup veterans Justin Newton (CEO) and Dawn Newton, the company set out to solve a fundamental tension in blockchain adoption: regulatory compliance requirements designed for traditional finance that did not map well to decentralized, pseudonymous networks.

Rather than treating compliance as a bolt-on layer, Netki builds it as embedded, automated infrastructure — enabling exchanges, wallet providers, DeFi protocols, and national governments to meet KYC, AML, and travel rule obligations without slowing down the user experience or requiring extensive in-house compliance engineering.

OnboardID: Automated KYC Verification

OnboardID is Netki's identity verification product for onboarding individuals and corporations. The platform uses real-time biometric capture and document scanning to verify identity in under 30 seconds. A proprietary document processing engine covers more than 5,000 types of government-issued identification from countries worldwide and supports native character sets including Arabic, Mandarin, Kanji, and Cyrillic — an explicit design choice to reduce the racial and geographic bias that affects many competing KYC systems.

The platform achieves a 95% autovalidation rate, compared to an industry average of approximately 60%, which Netki attributes to its broader document type coverage and a biometric engine trained on more diverse facial datasets. For operations teams, this translates directly to fewer manual reviews and lower cost per onboarding: the company reports up to a 60% reduction in onboarding costs for clients, as well as fraud prevention improvements from 10% to near-100% in documented case studies.

OnboardID is distributed as a white-label platform with APIs and mobile SDKs for iOS and Android, enabling teams to integrate verification into their own product flows without redirecting users to a third-party interface. A centralized dashboard consolidates individual verification, corporate verification, and travel rule data alongside audit logs.

The most concrete public benchmark for OnboardID's scale came in January 2021: Netki onboarded four million users in 45 days for Chivo, El Salvador's government-issued Bitcoin wallet launched as part of the country's legal tender rollout. Other documented clients include AlphaPoint, Celo, CMT Digital, and Hedera.

TransactID: Travel Rule Compliance

TransactID addresses the FATF Travel Rule, which requires VASPs to collect, verify, and transmit originator and beneficiary identity information alongside cryptocurrency transactions above a threshold amount. The requirement mirrors the travel of information that accompanies wire transfers in traditional banking, and its application to blockchain transactions has been one of the most operationally complex compliance obligations facing the industry.

TransactID has been in production since 2016, making it one of the earliest travel rule solutions in the market. The protocol uses peer-to-peer encrypted connections to exchange required identity data directly between counterparty VASPs before a transaction is finalized, avoiding centralized intermediaries and the latency and privacy risks they introduce.

Technically, TransactID is built on BIP 75 and the IVMS 101 data standard, which define the message format and fields for interoperable identity exchange across different VASP systems. Because the standard is open, TransactID can interoperate with other compliant systems rather than requiring all counterparties to use Netki's stack.

Notably, TransactID covers both custodial and non-custodial wallets — including decentralized exchanges — and works across all public and private blockchains. The extension to non-custodial wallets has been a focus of regulatory attention, including in the US Treasury's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on unhosted wallets, and Netki has positioned TransactID as the only production travel rule solution that handles this case. A 2021 integration with Blockchain Intelligence Group (a subsidiary of BIGG Digital Assets) extended TransactID's reach into that firm's global analytics and compliance network.

DeFi Sentinel: On-Chain Compliance Oracle

In May 2024, Netki launched DeFi Sentinel, a compliance oracle designed for DeFi protocols. Where OnboardID and TransactID handle pre-onboarding and inter-VASP flows, DeFi Sentinel operates transaction-by-transaction at the protocol level — screening each transaction before it is finalized on-chain.

The product combines on-chain and off-chain data to evaluate transactions against a configurable set of rules covering KYC/AML status, wallet screening, financial transaction monitoring, securities compliance, and tax compliance. The goal is to let DeFi protocol developers embed compliance into the protocol itself rather than managing it as a separate off-chain process — addressing a structural barrier to institutional participation in DeFi, where compliance uncertainty has blocked many potential participants.

DeFi Sentinel launched on the Sui blockchain in its initial release, integrating with Sui's infrastructure to enable protocol-level compliance. Evan Cheng, CEO of Mysten Labs (the original contributor to Sui), noted at launch that compliance concerns have historically prevented many viable DeFi ideas from reaching production, and that DeFi Sentinel directly targets that gap.

Compliance Posture and Standards

Netki's stack meets GDPR, CCPA, IVMS 101, and BIP 75 standards. The company targeted SOC-2 certification completion in 2022, as noted in its public documentation at that time.

Ecosystem Fit

Netki operates as infrastructure for the broader blockchain ecosystem rather than on a single chain. Its solutions work across all public and private blockchains, meaning exchanges, wallet providers, and DeFi applications built on any network — including Solana — can use OnboardID for user onboarding and TransactID for travel rule compliance. As Solana-based financial applications and VASPs face increasing regulatory scrutiny globally, purpose-built compliance infrastructure of the kind Netki provides becomes a practical requirement rather than an optional feature.

The company remains active, with its website, product pages, and documentation all maintained and approximately 11 employees reported as of early 2026. Its decade-plus focus on crypto-specific compliance, production deployment at national scale, and expanding coverage into DeFi protocol-level compliance position it as a technical compliance layer for the blockchain industry.
