DeFi Sentinel

DeFi Sentinel is a compliance oracle that provides real-time KYC, AML, wallet screening, and transaction monitoring for DeFi protocols. The system combines on-chain and off-chain data to ensure regulatory compliance at the transaction level.

About

Netki

Netki is a California-based identity verification and regulatory compliance company founded in 2014, purpose-built for the digital asset economy. Headquartered in Calabasas, the company focuses on making cryptocurrency transactions compatible with global KYC/AML regulations and international Travel Rule standards, serving a client base that spans cryptocurrency exchanges, decentralized finance protocols, security token issuers, and traditional financial institutions moving into digital assets.

Origins and Mission

Founded by early internet pioneers, Netki entered the blockchain compliance space well before regulatory scrutiny of the industry intensified. Its founding premise was that identity verification for crypto should not be bolted on as an afterthought but embedded natively into transaction infrastructure. The company developed an early reputation for supporting a broader range of identity document types and languages than incumbent KYC providers — a differentiator that shaped its product line as the regulatory environment matured through the FATF Travel Rule era and into the DeFi compliance era.

Product Suite

Netki's offering is organized around three distinct compliance products.

OnboardID is Netki's flagship KYC/AML solution for individual and institutional onboarding. It combines document validation with advanced biometric verification — including facial recognition with pixel-level ID analysis — and is available as a native Android SDK, iOS SDK, React Native library, and REST API. The platform claims a 95% autovalidation rate and up to 60% reduction in onboarding costs compared to traditional manual review processes. Netki supports four times more ID document types than typical competitors and covers multiple languages with native character recognition. The company also cites above-average racial diversity recognition in its biometric system, a specification it publishes as a product differentiator and a direct response to well-documented accuracy gaps in facial recognition technology across non-white populations.

TransactID is Netki's Travel Rule compliance product, designed to satisfy requirements from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), FINMA, and other regulatory bodies that mandate the transmission of sender and recipient identity information alongside cryptocurrency transactions above defined thresholds. TransactID enables secure, encrypted, peer-to-peer exchange of identity data between Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) before a transaction is finalized. It relies on the X.509 digital identity standard and the BIP 75 protocol for encrypted data transfer. The solution covers both custodial and non-custodial wallets, bridging compliance across public and private blockchains — a meaningful distinction as non-custodial and DeFi-native transaction volumes have grown.

DeFi Sentinel is Netki's most recent product and its most direct entry into the decentralized finance compliance market. It functions as an on-chain compliance oracle that intercepts transactions prior to blockchain finalization and screens them in real time against KYC/AML data, wallet blacklists, sanctions lists, securities regulations, and tax monitoring requirements. Rather than operating as a post-transaction monitoring layer, DeFi Sentinel's architecture integrates into the transaction flow itself — allowing DeFi protocols to satisfy institutional-grade compliance obligations without requiring each protocol to build bespoke regulatory tooling from scratch.

Blockchain Integrations

Netki's products are described as blockchain-agnostic and compatible with all public and private blockchains, but the company has pursued formal ecosystem integrations with specific chains. In May 2024, Netki announced the deployment of both DeFi Sentinel and OnboardID on Sui, the Layer 1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs. The integration enables Sui developers to embed compliant user onboarding and real-time transaction screening directly into their applications, removing a key barrier for institutional adoption of Sui-based protocols. Mysten Labs CEO Evan Cheng stated the integration "fortifies the security and compliance of transactions on Sui" while "assuring participants of their adherence to evolving regulatory requirements." Netki CEO Justin Newton framed the deployment as "setting a new standard for safety and compliance in the DeFi space." The company has also collaborated with Polymath to bring its identity verification tools to Polymesh, a purpose-built institutional-grade blockchain for security token issuance.

Funding and Company Status

Netki has raised approximately $3.5 million in disclosed funding from investors including Digital Currency Group, Bitfinex, Base Ventures, Hub71, and the Plug and Play Fintech Accelerator. The company is operationally active under CEO Justin Newton and was announcing new ecosystem partnerships and product deployments as recently as May 2024.

Competitive Positioning

Netki positions itself as the first provider of remote identity verification tools built specifically for blockchain applications, contrasting with general-purpose KYC vendors who retrofitted existing products for crypto use. Its principal differentiators are the breadth of accepted identity document types globally; the inclusivity of its facial biometric system across racial and linguistic diversity; the BIP 75-based encrypted communication architecture in TransactID; and the pre-finalization oracle model of DeFi Sentinel, which addresses compliance at the point of transaction rather than as an after-the-fact monitoring function. Together, these features position Netki as infrastructure for regulated crypto markets — both centralized exchanges navigating global travel rule enforcement and DeFi protocols seeking to attract institutional capital without sacrificing permissionless architecture.
