In a fascinating episode of the Superteam podcast, hosts Akshay and Tanmay sit down with Kanav Kariya, the President of Jump Crypto, to discuss his remarkable journey from intern to leading a 100+ person team in one of the most innovative companies in the cryptocurrency space.
Jump Crypto
Jump Crypto is the blockchain and digital assets division of Jump Trading, a Chicago-based proprietary trading firm. Formally launched as a distinct brand in September 2021, it operates across three main activities: market-making and liquidity provision, open-source infrastructure development, and venture investment in blockchain projects.
Background and Structure
Jump Trading was founded in 1999 by Bill DiSomma and Paul Gurinas and grew into one of the world's largest high-frequency trading firms. Jump Crypto was incubated within that organization as its crypto-native arm, bringing the same emphasis on performance engineering and quantitative research to decentralized networks. The division operates as a proprietary business and explicitly does not accept funds from external investors.
Kanav Kariya served as president of Jump Crypto until stepping down in June 2024 amid regulatory pressure. The firm reached a $123 million settlement with the SEC in December 2024 over claims related to misleading statements about the stability of TerraUSD (UST) during the Terra ecosystem collapse in 2022.
Core Business Lines
Trading. Jump Crypto participates as a market maker across major centralized exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, and across decentralized protocols, providing liquidity and performing proprietary trading. Its trading activity on Solana has included DEX participation on Serum and OpenBook.
Building. Jump Crypto's engineering output focuses on open-source blockchain infrastructure. Its primary project is Firedancer, a ground-up rewrite of the Solana validator client in the C programming language. The division also contributes research on market structure, decentralized storage, hardware acceleration, and cryptographic migration paths.
Investing. Jump Crypto provides capital and resources to early-stage blockchain projects. It has held significant positions in the Solana ecosystem and contributed to the rescue of the Wormhole bridge in February 2022, stepping in to replenish approximately $321 million after a critical exploit that drained user funds from the cross-chain messaging protocol.
Firedancer: Solana's Second Validator Client
Firedancer is Jump Crypto's most consequential infrastructure contribution. Solana's existing validator software had long been maintained by a single team — originally Solana Labs, later spun out as Anza — making the network vulnerable to single-client failures of the kind demonstrated during high-profile network outages. Firedancer is a completely independent implementation written entirely in C rather than Rust, with a design philosophy centered on performance from first principles rather than incremental optimization.
The project moved through a phased rollout spanning several years:
- Frankendancer: An intermediate hybrid combining Firedancer's networking and transaction-processing components with Agave's consensus layer, enabling real-world testing before the full client was ready. By early 2026, over 200 validators had adopted Frankendancer on mainnet.
- Full Firedancer launch: The complete client achieved mainnet block production in December 2025 after more than 100 days of continuous testnet operation on a small set of validators, producing over 50,000 blocks without major issues.
- Ongoing expansion (2026): As of May 2026, Firedancer was producing mainnet blocks and had processed tens of millions of live transactions. The rollout remains intentionally gradual, with founding engineer Ritchie Patel noting the team is waiting for comprehensive security audits before encouraging broad validator migration.
Firedancer targets one million transactions per second as a long-term performance horizon. A public audit competition with a $1 million bug bounty pool preceded the mainnet rollout, and an audit by security firm Neodyme was conducted with findings made publicly available. Client diversity — having two fully independent implementations — means that a critical bug in one client does not halt the entire network, a resilience property Ethereum has long cited as important to decentralization.
In April 2026, Jump Crypto released the BAM Maker Priority plugin, the first plugin built on its block-assembly framework, extending Firedancer's capabilities for market participants optimizing block construction.
Other Research and Infrastructure Work
Jump Crypto's research blog documents engineering contributions beyond Firedancer:
- Wiredancer: Hardware acceleration research targeting high-performance blockchain validation.
- Shelby: A decentralized storage pricing and cost-modeling framework.
- PropAMMs and permissionless market structure: Research into automated market-maker designs for decentralized exchanges, published April 2026.
- Quantum migration paths for Solana: Published April 2026, this paper examined how Solana should prepare for post-quantum cryptography transitions, concluding that quantum computers are not an immediate threat but that preparation should begin at the protocol level.
- Dual Flow Batch Auction: Analysis of batch-auction mechanisms for market making, published August 2025.
Pyth Network
Jump Crypto was a founding contributor to the Pyth Network, an on-chain oracle protocol that aggregates price data from institutional publishers directly onto blockchain networks. Pyth operates across Solana and multiple other chains and has become a widely used data feed for DeFi applications requiring low-latency, high-fidelity pricing without relying on traditional oracle designs.
DoubleZero
In early 2025, former Jump engineers contributed to DoubleZero, a project building a faster private network layer for blockchains by aggregating underutilized bandwidth from high-frequency trading firms and other sources. The project, co-founded by former Solana Foundation executive Austin Federa, raised $28 million in seed funding led by Multicoin Capital and Dragonfly Capital at a reported $400 million valuation.
Ecosystem Fit
Jump Crypto's involvement in Solana spans liquidity provision, tooling, oracle infrastructure, research, and core protocol engineering. The Firedancer client in particular addresses a structural vulnerability in the network and represents one of the most technically ambitious engineering commitments in the Solana ecosystem. The firm's combination of high-frequency trading expertise and infrastructure development reflects a strategy of participating at multiple layers of the networks it operates within, from market microstructure to consensus-layer software.
