Genopets
Genopets is the world's first free-to-play, move-to-earn NFT mobile RPG, built on Solana. Founded in 2021 and available on iOS and Android, the game merges the habit-forming appeal of lifestyle fitness apps with creature-collection RPG mechanics, letting players raise and evolve a digital companion — their Genopet — whose growth is tied directly to how much they move in the real world.
The Physical Activity Layer
At the core of Genopets is a step-tracking engine. Players connect their mobile device or a compatible fitness wearable, and every step, walk, or workout translates into in-game Energy. That Energy is the currency of progression: it fuels leveling up your Genopet, powering crafting recipes, and unlocking higher tiers of gameplay. The design philosophy draws explicitly from Tamagotchi-style daily nurturing habits and Pokémon-style evolution arcs — the key difference being that the catalyst for growth is the player's own physical activity, not hours logged in-game.
This makes Genopets one of the more conceptually coherent entries in the move-to-earn genre. Rather than treating activity as a simple drip of yield, the game integrates physical movement as the engine of the entire progression loop.
The Genopet NFT and Evolution System
Each player's primary asset is their Genopet — a digital creature recorded on the Solana blockchain with a unique genetic code and evolution history. Genopets can grow through 77 distinct levels and transform across 12 evolution stages, with appearance and rarity shifting at each milestone. The evolutionary path is shaped by the player's activity and the care choices they make — feeding, playing with, and nurturing the creature daily affects mood and stat progression.
The Genesis Collection, Genopets' founding NFT drop, consisted of 3,333 pre-evolved creatures, with 1,000 allocated to earlier Egg NFT holders and the remainder sold publicly. Genesis sale pricing was denominated in GENE rather than SOL, anchoring demand for the governance token directly to the NFT economy from launch.
Habitats: The On-Chain Resource Layer
Habitat NFTs are the primary income-generating asset in the Genopets ecosystem. These 3D landscape NFTs serve as digital homes for Genopets and come in five elemental variants — fire, wood, earth, metal, and water — each generating the corresponding elemental Crystal type. Habitats can be upgraded across three tiers using the GENE token; higher-level habitats produce more Crystals per day and accelerate the refinement process.
Beyond generation, Habitats unlock crafting capabilities and can be rented out to other players, creating a passive income layer for Habitat holders even when they are not actively playing. This rental mechanic is significant for free-to-play players: non-NFT holders can still access much of the core game, but those who own a Habitat gain access to resource generation and the KI token economy.
Crystals, Alchemy, and the Crafting Economy
Crystals produced by Habitats cannot be used raw — they must first be refined using both GENE and KI tokens. Once refined, they become inputs for the game's alchemy and crafting system, which produces rare NFT items including Augments and upgrade materials. Players can equip these to strengthen their Genopet or list them on the peer-to-peer in-app marketplace, which supports trading of Augments, Boosts, Crystals, and other in-game items. This marketplace bridges blockchain and non-blockchain players, keeping the economy accessible regardless of NFT ownership status.
Dual-Token Economy: GENE and KI
Genopets runs on two tokens.
GENE is the governance and staking token with a fixed supply. It functions as the premium layer of the economy: used for Genesis NFT sales, seasonal NFT drops, habitat upgrades, crystal refinement, and crafting high-value items. Stakers earn from a reward pool, receive private beta access, seasonal NFT drops, and future in-game Energy boosts. Governance rights allow GENE holders to vote on decisions including future token emissions and game mechanics. As of mid-2026, GENE trades at roughly $0.003 — a substantial decline from its November 2021 all-time high of $37.79 — with a circulating supply of approximately 95.8 million tokens and a market cap near $300,000.
KI is the in-game utility token, earned through Habitat NFTs at a rate based on the Habitat's level and the player's daily activity. KI is a consumable: it is burned upon use and subject to a daily earning cap, creating controlled supply dynamics. Its primary uses include evolving Genopets, constructing and upgrading habitats, engaging in battles, and contributing to crystal refinement alongside GENE. KI carries a market cap of approximately $3.5 million, making it the more actively traded token in the dual-token system.
Game Modes
Arcade Mode offers fast-paced, turn-based minigames that test reaction time, memory, and pattern recognition. Players compete on leaderboards and challenge each other for rankings and rewards.
Adventure Mode — set in the world of Esoterra — is an open-world exploration experience where players embark on quests solo or with friends, uncover hidden realms, and fight an invasion of nanobots. A recent preview introduced a real-world sector-claiming mechanic where players scan their surroundings to reveal the hidden Genoverse overlaid on their physical location, blending augmented-reality discovery with on-chain play.
Free-to-Play Model
Genopets is structured so that any player can download the app and begin tracking steps, leveling their Genopet, and engaging in battles without spending anything. NFT ownership — specifically a Habitat — unlocks the KI token earning and crafting layers. This two-tier structure allows the project to court a mainstream fitness-gaming audience while preserving meaningful utility for on-chain participants. Daily and weekly challenges award food, toys, and Augments for completing activity goals, keeping the experience rewarding at both tiers.
Current Status
Genopets remains actively developed. The mobile app received updates as recently as April 2025, and the project continues to ship features including Adventure Mode, personal referral codes, new camera perspectives, and expanded marketplace functionality. The game is live across iOS, Android, and web, with an on-chain program deployed on Solana Mainnet. A partnership with the Solana Saga phone provided exclusive in-game items to Saga holders, and the project became the first game to feature playable Bitcoin NFTs through its Golden Babies drop, signaling a willingness to extend the asset layer beyond Solana's native ecosystem.
