Photo Finish Live (PFL) is a virtual horse racing game built on the Solana blockchain, developed by Third Time Entertainment and led by founder and CEO Ian Cummings, the former head of EA Sports' Madden NFL franchise. The game allows players to own, breed, and race digital horses in a player-driven economy denominated in real money, and has been certified fair by eCOGRA — the same independent testing authority used by regulated online casinos. The platform is 21+ in recognition of its real-money wagering elements.

Originally created as a mobile simulation game in 2014, Photo Finish transitioned to a blockchain-based model in 2021, migrating its economy onto Solana to take advantage of the chain's high throughput and sub-cent transaction fees. How the Game Works

Photo Finish Live is structured around recurring seasons, each lasting approximately four weeks of real time and representing one year in a horse's life. Horses are NFTs with distinct genetic traits that influence their performance across different surfaces (dirt or turf), distances, and weather conditions. A horse's statistical profile — speed, stamina, surface preference — is determined by its bloodline and emerges more fully with each race.

Horses enter one of several race tiers: Maiden races for new horses, Claiming races for lower-tier competitors, and Stakes races for elite animals. Entry fees from all participants in a race pool together to form the prize fund. The top finishers split 90% of that pool, with the remaining 10% flowing to the owner of the track on which the race is run.

Each horse ages one year per season and retires from competition at age eight. This creates a continuous four-week cycle of new foals entering the system and aged horses transitioning to breeding roles, keeping the horse supply dynamic and preventing the permanent entrenchment of a small group of early asset holders.

The strategic depth lies in matching horses to races suited to their genetics. A horse that thrives on short sprints in dry conditions may perform poorly on a long route in wet weather. Players who learn to read their horses' attributes and select appropriate races consistently outperform those who race at random — distinguishing PFL from purely luck-based games.

The Dual-Token Economy

DERBY is the in-game stablecoin pegged at 80 DERBY per US dollar. It is the primary currency for race entry fees, horse purchases on the marketplace, breeding fees, and wagering. DERBY is minted on demand when players deposit fiat or crypto and burned through ecosystem fees, maintaining its peg. Because the operational currency is stable, players' day-to-day racing activity is insulated from the volatility that has undermined economies in other Web3 games.

CROWN is the utility and governance token of the Photo Finish ecosystem. It has a fixed maximum supply of 250 million tokens, all of which were released into the ecosystem by April 2025 by The Crown Foundation (Cayman Islands). CROWN is earned through racing — every race distributes a small amount to participants regardless of finish position — and can be staked to claim a share of track ownership.

Track ownership is the primary utility of CROWN staking. Each season, players compete in an open market by staking CROWN against a given track. The more CROWN a player stakes relative to the total staked on that track, the higher their ownership percentage. Track owners collectively receive 10% of all entry fees generated on their track, paid out in DERBY. The majority owner of a track also holds special administrative rights. As of late 2026, approximately 139 million of the 250 million circulating CROWN tokens are staked across tracks.

The CROWN page features an integrated Jupiter-powered swap widget, allowing players to acquire CROWN directly without leaving the site, and a yield calculator that models expected DERBY returns based on entry fee volume, growth rate, and CROWN staked.

By the end of 2025, Photo Finish Live had generated over $23.6 million in horse sales, more than $54.7 million in cumulative race entry fees, $9.7 million in earnings distributed to track owners, and $19 million in stud fees paid to breeding stallion owners. Infrastructure and Compliance

All horse ownership, breeding actions, race entries, and payouts are processed on the Solana blockchain. Race outcomes are simulated off-chain to achieve the speed and complexity required, but resulting payouts settle on-chain instantly, providing a transparent ledger of all economic activity. The game supports custodial Solana wallets for players who prefer not to manage their own keys, lowering the barrier to entry for mainstream gamers.

Third Time Entertainment's eCOGRA certification subjects the game's random number generation and race simulation logic to independent auditing, distinguishing it from blockchain gaming projects that rely on unverified smart contracts.
