DogWifHat

Literally just a dog wif a hat — Solana's flagship memecoin.

About

DogWifHat

Dogwifhat is a Solana-based memecoin whose identity is rooted entirely in a viral image: Achi, a 6-year-old Shiba Inu from South Korea, photographed wearing a pink knitted hat. The image spread widely across social media before an anonymous developer launched it as an SPL token in November 2023 under the ticker WIF. The project makes no utility claims and carries no whitepaper, roadmap, or formal team structure. Its self-described premise — "literally just a dog wif a hat" — doubles as its value proposition.

Token structure

WIF is an SPL token on Solana with the contract address EKpQGSJtjMFqKZ9KQanSqYXRcF8fBopzLHYxdM65zcjm. Total supply is approximately 998,839,087 tokens. The mint authority has been permanently removed, so no additional tokens can be created. No freeze authority exists either. There was no presale and no venture capital allocation; the supply entered circulation immediately at launch, meaning there is no vesting schedule and no insider unlock schedule to track. The token's fixed, fully circulating supply is one of the few on-chain facts the project can point to beyond meme status.

Growth trajectory

After launch in November 2023, WIF traded near $0.0015. In December 2023 alone it appreciated approximately 2,000x. By March 31, 2024, it reached an all-time high of $4.83 per token — a market capitalization of roughly $4.58 billion — placing it among the largest meme coins in the broader crypto market and the dominant dog-themed token on Solana. Reports from that period indicate early holders who entered at near-zero prices turned positions as small as $300 into $300,000 within weeks.

A secondary peak came in November 2024, when WIF returned to approximately $4.19 with a market cap near $4.2 billion. By March 2025 the price had declined to roughly $0.43, a drop of around 91% from the all-time high, consistent with the broader contraction in speculative crypto assets during that period.

Community and governance

Dogwifhat operates with no formal governance structure. There is no DAO, no on-chain voting mechanism, and no founding team making public decisions. Direction emerges from social consensus among holders and influencers across platforms. The community motto — "the hat stays on" — functions as the project's informal rallying point. No venture capital firms are associated with the project, and no institutional backing has been disclosed.

The lack of centralized control means community campaigns can gain momentum without coordination from a core team. The most notable example was the "Sphere Wif Hat" initiative in early 2024, in which community members collectively raised approximately $690,000 in USDC with the stated goal of purchasing advertising time on the Las Vegas Sphere to display the WIF mascot. The Sphere operator later denied that any deal was in place. On March 31, 2025, the project confirmed the campaign would not proceed and that contributed funds would be returned to donors.

Technical properties

Because WIF is an SPL token on Solana, transactions settle in under a second with fees typically below $0.01. The token does not carry any embedded smart contract logic for staking, governance, or yield generation — it is a plain fungible token on the Solana token program. Liquidity is concentrated across decentralized exchanges including Raydium and Orca, with pools also present on PumpSwap. The token has also been listed on major centralized exchanges, extending its reach beyond on-chain trading.

Audit and security posture

No formal security audit has been published for the WIF token contract, which is consistent with its nature as a stripped-down SPL token with no complex logic to audit. The removal of mint and freeze authority addresses the most significant trust assumptions for a fixed-supply community token — no party can inflate supply or freeze holder balances.

Mascot and cultural context

The real dog behind the meme, Achi, is a Shiba Inu owned by a South Korean family. The dog's owners did attempt to monetize the association: they minted an Achi NFT on Ethereum rather than Solana, a decision that generated significant community backlash given WIF's Solana identity. That tension illustrates the project's structural contradiction — the mascot is real but unaffiliated with the token's anonymous creators, and the community's loyalty is to the meme rather than any individual or organization.

Risk profile

Dogwifhat has no revenue model, no product, and no mechanism for generating fundamental value. Price is driven by sentiment, narrative cycles, and the broader appetite for speculative assets. The token experienced a decline of more than 90% from its all-time high within roughly twelve months of reaching that peak, consistent with the historical pattern of high-profile meme coins. Holders have no recourse through governance and no claim on any underlying asset.
