Cointracker

CoinTracker is a crypto tax automation and portfolio tracking platform that connects exchange accounts and on-chain wallets, classifies transactions automatically, and generates the tax reports required for US filing — including IRS Form 8949, Schedule D, and the newer Form 1099-DA.

Founded in 2017 by Chandan Lodha and Jon Lerner, CoinTracker was an early Y Combinator graduate built on the premise that crypto investors should not have to manually reconcile thousands of transactions at tax time. The company raised a $100 million Series A in January 2022 at a $1.3 billion valuation. That round was led by Accel, with participation from General Catalyst, Initialized Capital, Y Combinator Continuity, Coinbase Ventures, and Intuit Ventures, among others. Coinbase is an official partner, and TurboTax maker Intuit has maintained a commercial relationship with CoinTracker since 2022 that allows users to push finalized tax data directly into TurboTax for filing. H&R Block has a comparable partnership.

Platform Scope

CoinTracker integrates with more than 500 exchanges, wallets, and blockchains, supporting over 50,000 smart contracts and 600 decentralized applications. Users connect their accounts via API keys or read-only wallet addresses; the platform then imports full transaction histories, categorizes each transaction by type, and calculates realized gains, losses, and income across the portfolio.

Core capabilities include:

  • Automated transaction classification: Trades, transfers, staking rewards, airdrops, DeFi activity, NFT buys and sells, and lending income are tagged by type and matched against cost-basis records.
  • Cost-basis accounting methods: Users can select FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, or specific identification depending on their tax strategy.
  • Tax loss harvesting: Available on paid plans, this surfaces unrealized losses that can be harvested before year-end to offset gains.
  • Account Health system: Flags missing cost-basis data, transaction gaps, and reconciliation discrepancies before they affect tax output.
  • Form 1099-DA support: The platform handles the full 1099-DA lifecycle — ingesting broker-issued forms, reconciling them against the user's own transaction history, flagging discrepancies, and filling cost-basis fields left blank by brokers.
  • Portfolio analytics: Real-time holdings, performance by asset, and year-to-date tax impact are visible in the app and mobile interface.

The free plan provides portfolio tracking and wallet syncing without generating downloadable tax documents. Paid plans start at $59 per year; the Prime tier at $199 per year adds tax loss harvesting and unlimited staking transaction support.

Solana Support

CoinTracker launched dedicated Solana support in April 2024, marking one of the platform's more technically demanding integrations given Solana's instruction-heavy transaction model and the large volume of SPL token activity across its DeFi ecosystem.

The integration covers the following Solana transaction types with automatic classification: rent fees, token account creation and closure, SPL token staking, liquidity pool deposits and withdrawals, yield farming rewards, airdrops, lending, borrowing, and NFT activity. Users do not need to manually categorize these transactions; the platform infers the activity type from the program interactions recorded on-chain.

Protocol-level auto-classification is supported for a range of Solana applications, including Orca, Kamino Finance, Jupiter, Marinade, Magic Eden, Lifinity, marginfi, Meteora, and Solblaze. Supported activity types vary by protocol but generally include swaps, liquidity provision, staking, and rewards.

The Solana data infrastructure behind the integration relies on two technical partners: Alchemy, for on-chain data accuracy, and Helius, for NFT metadata quality. CoinTracker offered a 20% first-year discount on paid plans to Solana community members at launch.

1099-DA and the Clarity Product

The introduction of IRS Form 1099-DA — a broker-reporting requirement that began phasing in with the 2025 tax year — is the most significant regulatory change to affect US crypto tax filers in years. Brokers are required to report proceeds from digital asset dispositions, but they frequently lack cost-basis information for assets acquired off-platform or transferred in from external wallets.

CoinTracker developed a product set it calls Clarity specifically for 1099-DA handling. Clarity ingests the broker-issued form, compares the reported figures against the user's full transaction history, identifies where costs are missing or misreported, and produces complete tax forms using the platform's own records to fill gaps. CoinTracker positions this as end-to-end 1099-DA support: from ingestion through reconciliation to final tax output.

Recent Platform Additions

Beyond Solana, CoinTracker has continued expanding its blockchain coverage. Unichain and Berachain were added to the supported network list in 2025, enabling wallet syncing and DeFi activity tracking on those chains. A dedicated crypto accounting subledger for businesses that hold digital assets on their balance sheets was also launched, aimed at corporate treasury and finance teams rather than individual investors.

The mobile application received updates including improved transaction filtering and editing, a redesigned home screen displaying year-to-date tax impact, and portfolio performance comparisons against Bitcoin as a benchmark asset.

In 2024, CoinTracker entered a partnership with MetaMask, extending its wallet integration to one of the most widely used self-custody Ethereum wallets.

Filing Integrations

CoinTracker's direct filing integrations with TurboTax and H&R Block are a key differentiator for US retail users. Once tax calculations are complete in CoinTracker, the results can be pushed to either platform without manual CSV downloads, reformatting, or re-entry. CoinTracker also offers a professional tier aimed at CPAs and tax advisors who file on behalf of clients with complex crypto portfolios.

The cointracker.io domain now redirects to cointracker.com following a domain migration, but both addresses reach the same platform.
